QF - Canterbury vs Northland

Just a little nervous about this one. Has a bit of a banana skin to it with the way the Taniwha play. Been impressed with them this season. Well coached side.
I’ll be interested in what backline we start with.

In some respects like the scrum maybe but overall I think the coaching has been a bit of a handbrake for Northland this year. Selections and tactics have often been questionable. Whilst our intent on defence has been much better we're still defending far too Narrow which has been a problem the last few years as well.
If Northland are to hve any chance in this game they will have to drastically cut down on their error rate. I'm giving us a chance but definitely underdogs.

@Chiefy07 when we are in sync, we look "reasonably" well coached, unfortunately the latter part of the season we've fallen back to our 2021 game of, well fuck knows what the plan was, the strong defence from early season gone too.
Our attack is pretty poor this season though, we have the 2nd= worst in the comp with Manawatu, only Taranaki have been worse, sure we have scored some excellent tries, but we have generally struggled to break down defences, even when we spend long patches in the opposition 22.
It's sport, so there is always a shot, but it is a very long shot, and Canterbury paying 1.12 for a reason.
I just want us to put in a decent performance, not fall off after 40 like we did earlier in the season.
-
If we can shut down Canterbury’s ability to keep the ball alive through endless offloading I would give us a slither of hope. We’ve always struggled with teams offloading game in broken play, and Canterbury are very good at that. Those inside balls in close channels are always a worry and we seem to get skinned time and time again.. even Manawatu exploited that twice on the weekend.
Wouldn’t like to place too much money on this one, but we are definitely the sort of team who can surprise the more fancied sides, as we have shown already this year.

Yeah, I thought it 'sounded' a bit funny when I wrote it.

Just the brothers
There's a Going in this years squad (Kalani) but he's at the beginning of his NPC career.
They've produced a decent number of Northland reps over the years. If they keep that up one day one might kick on:
Northland reps called Going -

@Duluth as well as Todd Miller, his brother Brad, are others related to the Goings too...off the top of my head I believe both Robbie Abel and David Holwell are related, Zion Going is in the dev side too...was a bit of a gap until Kalani made his debut (Jared Going in 2005 to Kalani 2020)

The Abel boys (Robbie and Charles) are related to the Goings through their fathers side.
It’s from 2017 but interesting.
Together, we sketch up a Going family tree. By our count, at least 16 Goings have played rep rugby, and several went on to represent their nation

Charlie Going was one hell of a presence in the Northland backline in the late 80s and into early 90s I think.
Some unforgettable moments in the match v Australia (think we ended up losing 28-14 but gave them a hell of a shake) in 1990, and he scored a 50 metre solo try v Wales around the same time.
That Australia game was also memorable for an end to end try finished off by Ziggy Seymour on the cutback to score under the posts.

In the games where Harbour and Ta$man ran at us we struggled. The tighter the better. Liked it last week when we had Tua running at their 1st five, with loose forwards playing off that.
