QF - Canterbury vs Northland

Noticed the obligatory Going in that Northland team. Wonder if we will ever see another Going reach the ABs? Apart from the original Going brothers has there been another? I suppose Todd Miller, but he wasn't a Going.
Just the brothers
There's a Going in this years squad (Kalani) but he's at the beginning of his NPC career.
They've produced a decent number of Northland reps over the years. If they keep that up one day one might kick on:

The last Northland win was back in 1999. Final score was 27-20
I remember two things about this game. The Northland pack put on a great performance particularly in the mauls. Glenn Taylor dominated Blackadder
Managed to find the try scorers and the team lists (missing one Cantab reserve)

@Duluth as well as Todd Miller, his brother Brad, are others related to the Goings too...off the top of my head I believe both Robbie Abel and David Holwell are related, Zion Going is in the dev side too...was a bit of a gap until Kalani made his debut (Jared Going in 2005 to Kalani 2020)

The Abel boys (Robbie and Charles) are related to the Goings through their fathers side.
Itâs from 2017 but interesting.
Together, we sketch up a Going family tree. By our count, at least 16 Goings have played rep rugby, and several went on to represent their nation

Charlie Going was one hell of a presence in the Northland backline in the late 80s and into early 90s I think.
Some unforgettable moments in the match v Australia (think we ended up losing 28-14 but gave them a hell of a shake) in 1990, and he scored a 50 metre solo try v Wales around the same time.
That Australia game was also memorable for an end to end try finished off by Ziggy Seymour on the cutback to score under the posts.

If we can shut down Canterburyâs ability to keep the ball alive through endless offloading I would give us a slither of hope. Weâve always struggled with teams offloading game in broken play, and Canterbury are very good at that. Those inside balls in close channels are always a worry and we seem to get skinned time and time again.. even Manawatu exploited that twice on the weekend.
Wouldnât like to place too much money on this one, but we are definitely the sort of team who can surprise the more fancied sides, as we have shown already this year.
In the games where Harbour and Ta$man ran at us we struggled. The tighter the better. Liked it last week when we had Tua running at their 1st five, with loose forwards playing off that.

@kev I reckon this is the side we will run out with (given I havent heard of any new injuries)
Adams, BKP, Ofa
Goodhue, Hallam-Eames
Rush, McNamara, Matich
Nock, Reihana
Hohaia, Tua
Murray, Moorby, MacilaiWright, CTC, Puafisi, Craig/Caird, Mau'u, LMH, Hawkins, Ranger
They may roll Matich at 8 and Mau'u at 7, I doubt LMH will start, but I think I'd prefer he did, and obviously I'd run Going at 12, while I assume they will start Ofa, I believe he is currently in Tonga and due back tomorrow, so may even roll him off the bench, at half time to help us given its the 2nd spell we have dropped off vs the better teams

Team I have heard:

1 Jarred Adams
2 Bruce Kauika-Petersen
3 Ofa Tu'ungafasi
4 Josh Goodhue
5 Sam Caird
6 Rob Rush
7 Jonah Mau'u
8 Matt Matich
9 Sam Nock
10 Reviz Reihana
11 Heremaia Murray
12 Blake Hohaia
13 Tamati Tua
14 Jone Macilai-Tori
15 Josh Moorby16 Ross Wright
17 Corey Te Whata-Colley
18 Sila Puafisi
19 Liam Hallam-Eames
20 Sam McNamara
21 Lisati Milo-Harris
22 Daniel Hawkins
23 Rene RangerObviously this won't compare well with Canterbury but there's some experience at higher levels there
By my count:
2 All Blacks
15 players with SR experience (sure, some players with only brief experience or with the Sunwolves)Plus Rush has a SR contract next year and guys like Murray are a chance

@Duluth have to think one of the better sides we have been able name for some time, could be a bit stronger if Jack Goodhue and Tom were available, possibly putting the latter at lock, Apoua into the 23 too...
On thier day I think the 23 named are good enough to beat any of the teams, but doing that in a quarter against this Canterbury side, there is a reason they are paying around 1.10...as above, be happy if we put in a good performance.

Yeah, a tough disciplined performance is what we want - where we stay in the fight and donât leak points. Scrum was an issue for us in the 1st game but this pack should be a lot better at that phase.
-
@kev yeah adding Ofa to the front row helps (was CTC last time) but last time we started with Hallam-Eames and Craig at lock, and IMO Goodhue is one of the better scrummaging locks running around so that should help us tomorrow.
We also had no Moorby last time we played them, so on paper we are better than that game too, just need to do the business on the grass...
$1.08 vs $7.00 at TAB.
Canterbury $1.42 for 13+ and at better odd paying less than $6 to win by 31-40 than we are just to win.Stats point to a thumping, history also says we lose on average 32-14, and 1987 was our last win down there, when both Rene Ranger and Ross Wright weren't even a year old, while id guess the rest of the squad werent even born....
