The ferns were still better than the ABs have been most of the year
-
@Machpants Rubi on the soapbox pushing the virtues of Womens Rugby ..the only only problem is the product needs to be way better than what the Black Ferns dished up ..and before anybody jumps on their high horse I would be throwing out the same barbs if Males dished this rubbish up
-
By geez, much as I like the idea of women playing etc, it's pretty ordinary skillwise. Big ups to commentators tring to make like it was high quality rugby. Still think it will be ok a 4-5 years!
In saying that I admit to only seeing the second half, after the shield game. -

Ruby Tui is always such a great interview. Best part of international rugby right now.
Loved the question to Justin Harrison, your name is Justin isn't it? When he say yes, she says yep like Justin Marshall!! The girl is good.

The problem is like any women's sport: variability. It isn't consistently good, because the underlying layers aren't consistently good - very early in the life cycle when you think about it.
NZ Womens Rugby had the dominance early doors because like most early-adopter sports, the naturally skilled people got all the game time despite being amateurs.
Aussie rugby has a very small base so you get the natural players dominating and the programs don't identify and bring through others; throw in NRLW and you're going to be hard-pressed to get the best, with the tip of the spear playing 7s in terms of skill level. Now in the UK and France we're seeing investment and the consistency rise with regular competition. That will be interesting to watch this RWC in NZ.

Yup, watching some North harbour first XV, the attacking skill play about the same, but that's cos the ruck work on defence is nowhere near as tough allowing free flowing rugby.

In saying that I admit to only seeing the second half, after the shield game. That whole game was a hard watch but there were also some good skills on show. Did you see that sequence of about 7 offloads in a row?
At times the top levels of the womens game is schoolboy level stuff which is about right when you consider the exposure to the game and playing time most of thhese players have had. They dont grow up with the game at decent levels or get anywhere near the number of matches.
Saying that though, I think there is the ability to upskill fast. Provincial academy intakes are including young women players and providing them with skills and training frameworks and support. The growth in numbers will push through the cream.
I'm finding itenjoyable to go along with the ride. -
On the players, although the whole thing didn't gel there were good performances by a number of players individually. I thought Reynolds was her usual disruptive self, Ngan-woo was excellent, McMeniman very good.
Demant much better at 12 as has been said before and although there were a couple of errors I thought Brunt was very solid out there.
Basically the Aussies got in their faces and they needed to switch to a more direct game without pushing to far before the recycle. The number of times players got isolated was a killer.
Losing a player to a head first charging rhino wasn't ideal but they needed to learn from that as well.
Pretty sure their ears will be ringing from Smith after that showing. -

Jeez, where have I seen that mentioned about sub par performances by a team in black....?

Stuff ratings from the game. Look to be quite generous and unbalanced IMO.
They have identified the better players but also talked up some e.g. Tubic, Steinmetz that didn't really front. Leti-I’iga also deserved a below average score. She is certainly a weapon when given ball in space but comes across as sloppy in general play. Needs to focus on a complete game. Also thought Bayler was pretty average and needed more urgency to set the tone around her. IMO Brunt carried the backs and because of that made a few errors but on effort and thinking about the situation she probably deserved another point.
