Yeah, you could argue Matera has unbound there but I think it is the right call. Tough for the Tahs that they get the double punishment.
A maul doesn't end just because there's no defenders.

Yes it does end the maul. That is unless the defenders intentionally leave the maul, then it continues.
Where the ball carrier splits off from the maul (by himself or with only his own players) the maul does end.
Anyway, I am not really arguing it, I just thought it was interesting.
