Women's cricket is really, really shit. It's great that it's getting a bit of exposure this year, and having their games as the curtain-raisers in the World Cup and Big Bash is a really progressive initiative.

I reckon that is changing as more real athletes come into the game - the Windies have some players who can clear the fence and not just the boundary rope and they also have strong arms in the field. Reading that article I posted above Matthews, who scored the runs in the final, picked cricket over track and field. Once there is money in T20, the standard will rise fast I reckon as it becomes a career choice.
 
NZ Women really seemed to lack athletes in the team - plenty of plodders in the field. The Windies basically won that semi-final by consistently turning 1s into 2s and running singles when hitting straight to a fielder in the circle.

I agree with that. Some of our women are now earning around 6 figures for sport with endorsements, and while they'll probably always lag behind the men, making it a career instead of a hobby is massive.
 
I can't begin to imagine how you'd nail down a fulltime job interview with "by the way I need 12 weeks off a year to play and train cricket!" if you didn't have any other income.

Is T20 the future for minnow nations now? You don't need the same level or depth of talent, the cash and TV ratings are there, and you can actually win some silverware. And I am including the Windies in that minnow category, as their test side is atrocious.
 
Why would a young WI/Afghan/Banga/Zimbo cricketer want to play test matches? You earn fuck all to get the shit kicked out of you. 
 
I wonder if Tests will just become the domain of Aus/Eng/Ind/SA and maybe NZ/Pak/SI.

Well the word was that top Pakistan and WI players were making less than 100k a year, some as little as 60k.
 
And as for NZ in the maybes, that was more about opportunity than ability. The 'big four' get a consistent supply of big-ticket test series, both at home and away. Unfortunately NZ seems a bit starved for content, especially longer series against the World's best.
 
I could see why NZ players might start to see T20 as a more consistent and lucrative career choice.

If the BBL trajectory continues upward, they will definitely be looking for new markets, particularly when rights come back up again. Channel Ten have been loving the exposure, but will be fighting hard.
 
Thing is, depending who you ask, those "plans" are often "beer coaster ideas".

I think they're in a bit of a jam in terms of expansion. Two biggest cities have two teams each (go The Thunder!) and there aren't many others that are going to support the venue requirements at this point.
 
Manuka Oval in Canberra maybe, but will it stir the same small-town parochialism as Hobart or Perth? ... or Adelaide or Brisbane... 
 
I think, in that sense, its perfect for the Kiwi teams to want to take down Big Brother.

Guys earning sixes through power and timing like the old days would be refreshing rather than the top edges that go for six that we see nowadays. Only issue is will todays fans whinge cos there's less boundaries ?
 
Back to the money side of things I remember being mates of a mate of a guy who knows James Franklin who earned 168k US for a couple of months in India and naturally whenever he went out with Tendulkar by his side ( which the team did every night they weren't playing ) he never had to reach in his pocket. Not bad for a guy who was tenuously in and out of the Black Caps at the time and was confused what his role in the team actually was.
 
But then a guy like Guptill doesn't even get an IPL contract at all ?????? some shit sure makes no sense.

2) If a batsman is caught out, but the batsmen have crossed and are starting to come back for a possible 2nd run (if catch had been dropped), does the first run count?

Same in the UK where Franklin has always had zero problem getting very high paying contracts - and has delivered. He's one of those guys that NZ crowds don't rate at all yet teams that pay on results have always paid top dollar for. He had a period where he was getting slagged off if mentioned near the BCs yet Mumbai were paying him a shit ton to open with Sachin & Gloucs were paying him a similarly large amount to play as their overseas pro. Middlesex just named him as their 50 over captain at a time when most BCs couldn't get a gig in the UK if they begged.
 
Over the last 10 years he's probably been on of the consistently highest earning NZ cricketers. And it's backed up on the pitch, more 1st class tons than Cairns - in less games, and took his wickets at a better average. 
 
The Fern however hates him. But I'm not sure I'd give a shit if I were Franklin.

cricinfo confirms his first class stats are very impressive, for a guy who pretty much started as a "bowler who could bat" nearly 9000 runs at 36 is a hell of a return. Similarly considering he couldn't buy a test wicket towards the end of his career 456 wickets at 27 is awesome. He's almost our very own Mark Ramprakash.
