ICC T20 World Cup

Pakistan away to an absolute flier, and are odds on to do this at a canter now if they don't self destruct. Opening with Santner was a bad call on a pitch offering little for the spinners, just got them on the front foot early.

I'm just glad I was able to successfully undo TeWaio's jinx.

Sticking my neck out here and saying we'll get this at a canter. This is not an easy pitch to bat on, more like the Nz/Aus pitch than the SA/Eng one. Guppy, Herb, and Ross were outstanding.

Never in doubt (and not because I had a burner phone texting a bookie in Rawalpindi)
-

Incidentally, does anyone know why they don't use the DRS in T20Is?

India? -

Pakistan has been a bogey team for NZ in previous tournaments so it was good to get over the line.

I wonder if changes will be made for the Bangles game? Guptill left the field with tightness in his hamstring so it might be sensible to rest him for the SF.
-

With Black Caps now qualified, that means two of Australia, India, Pakistan are going to miss the semis.

Australia still to play India and Pakistan.
-

Really puzzled by the paki chase. They were cruising and should have done this easily.

I made some good money at the TAB again by gotta suspect some pakis somewhere made more

Don't think so.

If you watch the match it was only a good slogging innings by Sharjeel with the field up in the first 6 overs against mainly pace bowling that got them away to a flying start. Once the fielding restrictions ended and we introduced spin on what was a big ground especially on the square boundaries they could not hit boundaries. When they tried they were caught on the boundary. With only 1 ands 2s they couldn't get any big overs in the last 10.

That is why it was such a good innings by Guptill as he did what Sharjeel did but kept it reined it in and kept going after the first 6 overs when the fielding restrictions lifted. Ground was a good one for him with his straight hitting meaning the big sqaure boundaries were not an issue. Good innings by Taylor at the end as well although a bit streaky.

Shows what a stupid decision it was that Guptill was not picked up by the IPL. He is if not the best 20/20 batter going certainly one of the best. His record is phenomenal. They put up a statistic about most runs scored in 20/20s. He will easily overtake Mcullum soon in way fewer matches and has more runs than Warner from about the same amount of games.
-

Impressive performance by again by Sodhi and Santner. Indian commentators really focusing on Sodhi but Santner was again a real star 2 for 29. Take out his 15 run opening over which was the first of Pakistans innings without fielding restrictions and he got 2 for 14 from 3 overs.

It would be worth giving a Boult a go in the next match. Don't like Santner wasting an over in the first 6 and Boult could be the best bet to bowl that opening over. It would be at the expense of Milne or McCleneghan though. If they don't McCleneghan or Milne should bowl the opening over. Even if they go for a few don't waste one of Santners overs when he only gets 4. I know it is only 20/20 and still the pool games but it is looking like NZ have the best spin bowlers in the tournament.

I know its a big difference to test cricket but the confidence and experience they take from this will hopefully mean they can justify spots in the team in more than just this format moving forward and get groundskeepers to produce pitches that suit. Considering we looked berift of ideas when it didn't swing against Aussies if we could open with swing and then look to keep pressure on with some half decent spin it would be a big step forward.
-

It is about now I wish the tournament was decided in a league table and not knockout finals

-

Surely the bowling mix is entirely down to the pitches? We got this aspect right in the first two games and others didn't.

If we move on to playing on better pitches then bring Boult and Southee back in but in reality they wouldn't be offering much more than what we are already getting.

Now we are qualified though, how does the format work? Is there an advantage in using the match fit guys and aim for a big win against the Bangles or can we give other players a chance to get some gametime?
-

Watched some of the highlights of the Paki game. How the fuck they lost that after the start they got...

Guptill, Taylor and Anderson batted well. But our bowling at the start of the innings was a worry. And for fuck's sake will they put Ronchi at 11. (Like his average.)
-

As for Ronchi, why would you not elevate Santner above him? He has a vettoriesque way of hitting boundaries -

I quite like the idea of taking pace off it in the powerplay at the start. The pitches are slow & so many openers do the Baz thing where they figure its a quick bowler opening, almost no one outside the ring, I just have to flay it on the up & my chances are good. So in India with no pace from the pitch & no pace from the bowler the batsmen have to actually hit it, not just outside edge it.
