@steven-harris so he has just moved up here to try for a contract (do you know which club he is going to) not our dumb coaches signing people before club footy started?

Plenty of Kake's up this way...

@steven-harris Are you sure his name is Trent Kake? I don't know anybody with that name from here. If his name is Trent Hape, it's another story ...

Agree with @Stargazer - I suspect the player is Trent Hape.

Came through the HB Academy, has played sevens for HB, last year played for the HB Dev team and the Magpies WTG, so was probably 4th ranked in the province last year behind Enari, McLeod, and Tusitala.

Can also cover wing which is why he has played sevens.

@number-10 my apologies Trent Hape is the fella .
Would you rate him ahead of Connor McLeod and Zac Donaldson..?.
And do you see him as an NPC halfback..?

@steven-harris Definitely not rated ahead of McLeod by the Magpies coaches, but mabye about the same level as Donaldson, who has played 8 games for the Magpies during his 5 years in the Magpies Dev team.

Hape played on the wing for Hastings Boys' in the 2016 Top 4 Final loss to MAGS and was also part of the 2017 title winning squad. He's been part of the HB Sevens team for years and participated in the Ignite 7s - I think in 2018. Can play halfback, wing and first five. He's been part of the Magpies Academy and WTG for a few years, probably played some preseason games for the Magpies (I can't remember), but never made the step up to first class games (either NPC or the Heartland Ranfurly Shield games).

@taniwharugby According to the article below, he plays for Old Boys Marist.

Not sure what to make of this.

Tiaki Fabish has been named in an initial Wellington Māori squad for the 2022 season. Either that's because he's no longer in our Academy or Wider Training Group, or it's because our WTG hasn't been named, yet.

I wouldn't be happy if we lose him to whatever Wellington side, although I realise he's studying in Wellington, and playing club rugby there for that reason. I'd rather see him play for the Saracens and be available for the Magpies, in case we have a long list of injuries.

@Stargazer Has there always been a CHB rep team? How is the team selected?

@Nepia I've only been aware of it, the last few years, so I can't answer your question.

I'm actually not sure they are officially a sub union (didn't know what else to call them). The short description on their FB pages says: "We are made up from all the rugby clubs in Central Hawkes Bay".

They are the holders of the Bebbington Shield, something I hadn't heard of before today.

Al the sub unions used to have teams until the falling away of numbers. Central used to be selected from the likes of Waipawa United, Waipuk HSOB, Otane, Porongahau, Poho and Takapau. Dannevirke was picked from Excelsior, Aotea, Dannevike OB and Rangatane. Taupo had a team when they were still in Hawkes Bay as did Wairoa (Mahia, Waiau, Athletic, Nuhaka, YMP, Tapuae). They still play for something like the Bebbington Shield against the likes of CHB, Dannevirke, Rangetikei, Northern Wangnaui, and maybe even the old Bush Sub union.

Obviously thing have changed a bit with many of the areas down to one or two team nowadays.

    EDIT: Found this

Great day in the country for shield rugby

The Central HB Sub-Union officially went into recess in 2003.

There is still a Rep Rugby Committee which selects rep teams. Central HB have held the Bebbington Shield since 2009.

Tui wider training group (as announced 14 June 2022)

    f328c959-4653-4fba-b189-3d6c8f9a474d-image.png

Lots of familiar faces from previous years, but also some newbies.
Some old-timers again in the frame (Emma Jensen, Gemma Woods, for example), some of our exciting players (Harmony Kautai, Amelia Pasikala), Super Rugby players (Kathleen Brown, Krysten Cottrell).

Notable absentees: Teilah Ferguson (was back from Otago, played for the Hurricanes Poua). "Poached" by Wellington or injured? Same with big prop Ashley Palu, who played for Matatu. Would be gutted if she'd be playing for another province, too. We've lost some real talent the last couple of years with Liana Mikaele-Tu'u and Cortez Te Pou (now playing league in Australia) the most recent ones.

@Stargazer said in 2022 Hawke's Bay Representative Rugby:

    Ashley Palu

It that the huge number 26? If so she was very close to being my favourite player, don't know why but she just was. If not then that anonymous number 26 still retains the honour.
