@barbarian every rebuild coach is doomed to fail. I can think of one or two in the last 20 years that have survived - Clarko and Ken Hinkley. There is a list as long as your arm of seemingly good footy brains that never see the rebuild through.
Noble will have plenty of opportunities but not a senior coach role in the immediate future.
True, but generally they don't get punted this quickly. And after last season you'd have said he had the team in pretty good shape under the circumstances.
I think the whole review thing was cover for this whole disaster show including firing Scott and hiring Noble
-
The whole thing in hindsight was really weird. Noble was really experienced, but has spent 10 years as an administrator (really helped build the Lions' list)
They then took him at North to coach again, i assume based as much on his experience building clubs than anything (which is in itself a weird decision). They absolutely gut the list.
Then the President does a bizarre interview where he gives Noble 3 years (with a dogshit list) to make the top 4 and "contend for a premiership"
They were doomed at that point.
Look, 5-33 or what ever it was, and getting belted every week, it's pretty clear this wasn't working. So making a change is probably the right move. but
who can they get?
And what are the realistic expectations they can have?Rebuilds from this point take 5 years minimum. And that's if you nail the draft every year, and get some trade steals. Most rebuilds from the bottom go nowhere for ages these days.
Any coach going in knows they are going to lose. a lot. The media are going to go after them to get sacked at some point in teh next 18 months. And, even if you survive the media onslaught, it's basically guaranteed you'll get fired before the real results arrive
-
And it's made worse by the fact that North are poor as shit and nobody really wants to play for them.
If you look at Carlton, they were dogshit for a very long time. But they have turned it around in large part to bringing in free agents - Saad, Williams, Cerra, Hewett etc.
Being a part of a big Melbourne club was still a pull factor, even if they were rubbish.
North don't have this, and it seems almost impossible that they can build a roster capable of winning a flag. Who was the last genuinely good free agent to choose to go to North?

the "North warchest" has been a running joke for years
they have thrown money at everyone that comes up and they get nothing.
Isn't their financial situation actually pretty solid
(as an aside, Carlton being a trade destination of choice every year despite being dogshit for 20 years has always fucked me off, and is the big red flag about why it's so hard for clubs outside of Vic to build up).
-
Could someone that knows a bit more about these things please explain the North Melbourne v Richmond result thanks?
2022 is drunk
also loooooooooooool
this season is all over the shop
The Bulldogs beat the Saints by more than the scoreboard suggests.
Carlton again fail when playing a decent side
Swans go to Perth and beat Freo
Essendon win again. So we have 2 wins separating 1st and 7th. Then 5 teams battling for 8th
Hawthorn, Essendon, GWS, the Crows, the Eagles and North are already booking Bali for September.
-
the run home is interesting
Geelong do not play another side currently in the top 8
Melbourne have to play Freo, Collingwood, Carlton and the Lions
The Lions have Carlton and Melbourne
Freo have the Dees
Collingwood have Melbourne, Sydney and Carlton
Sydney have a very nice run, only having to host Collingwood
Carlton finish with the Lions, the Dees and CollingwoodOf the teams looking at 8th Port and the Suns probably have the best draw
So i reckon the final 8 is
Cats
Freo
Melbourne
Brisbane
Sydney
Collingwood
Carlton
Port (huge after starting 0-5) -
What a finish! Pies win after the siren with Elliot kicking one from the boundary line from just inside 50.
I had just switched it over as the Saints game went to half time.
Pies are on fire with the close games.

and it shows on the ladder.
13-5 with a percentage of 106
Another crazy weekend
Melbourne lose again
Freo and the Tigers with the draw.Cats now clear top. Can't wait to see how they fuck up the finals this year.
The Suns are far better than 8-10 suggests.
I may have overestimated Port's ability to make it. They would need to win out now. 12 wins to play finals meaning even Richmond are in a tough spot.
-
@mariner4life and Saints break a 12 year hoodoo over the Eagles in Perth. We are still in it, although Port beating the Dees didn’t help our cause.

Yeah the Dogs.
Port losing to Cats was helpful. Thought Port played some really good finals type footy too.

i think Port have to win out. Not impossible given their draw, but they wouldn't want to be within a kick of Collingwood at the death this weekend
Saints or Dogs most likely to make it now.

Top 4 battle front and centre this week
Freo host the Dees tonight, both off the back of disappointing results
Sydney and Carlton have games they should win
The Lions have Richmond on the 'G, and we know how that usually goes for us
Collingwood host Port, and that's a tough game at the momentThe Saints should take care of Hawthorn
You would hope the Suns can knock over the Eagles
Essendon have the bye -
well that sorted out pretty much nothing
Okay, no wait. The Lions are done as a premiership contender. Not this year, but as a group, until something changes. That loss yesterday was the icing. Big game at the MCG, big half time lead. Richmond come out in the 2nd half, the heat goes on, and as usual, the Lions just fold. We are just soft. Fages you cuddly bear, it might be time to move on.
And for the final goal to be kicked by the biggest flog in the competition hurt the most.Richmond may not be the team they were, but they showed yesterday what it takes to be a premiership team. Hard as fuck at the contest is everything. Have a ruthless edge. Grab every chance. The Lions have a lot of skillful players, but they lack the edge to just smash a game.
Melbourne come back to life and smash Freo
Collingwood win another by a kick to kill off Port for the year.
Sydney hammer GWS to jump in to the top 4
Saints get the win they needed
Carlton Lol it up and lose to the Crows.
Gold Coast hang on by their finger tipsCarlton and the Saints have 3 tough games to try and make finals.
Richmond probably have the softest draw from here out, Bulldogs next. Not inconceivable that both leapfrog the Blues and the SaintsOn balance the top 4 right now should stay that way. Collingwood could steal a minor premiership with a percentage under 110!

@mariner4life there’s a strong possibility that neither of the Saints and Blues make it and the Dogs and Tigers scrape in.
I was there to watch us almost have the biggest choke of the season against the Hawks on Saturday. Played well for 3 quarters despite our efficiency being no where near it needs to be.
Our % sucks and we have Geelong in Geelong (no way) then Brissy at Marvel (possible) and Swans at Marvel (probably 60/40 in Swans favour with them playing for top 4).
Brissy look cooked but given it’s not the MCG they could pull out a big one against us on a Friday night (I’ll be there, so jinx alert).
Some big games coming up this week:
- Dees v Pies - at the G on a Friday night. They’ll get 75K+
- Dogs v Freo - playing for top 8 and top 4 respectively.
- Port v Tigers - spoilers and Tigers season on the line.
- Lions v Blues - massive ramifications for the 8.
-
so given what Eddie Betts said in his book it's pretty easy to see why the Crows imploded after that GF.
That camp was fucked up, and the company that ran it is obviously not right in the head.
-
@ACT-Crusader every game this week looks good. lots of teams playing each other that are in similar spots

following on from this, Mark Ricciuto is a piece of shit, and should be sacked because it is clear he doesn't have the moral compass to resign
