Crows ... how did they get so bad?
it's a good question. How do you go from a GF to a dumpster fire almost over night?
It's been five years?

they fell off a cliff straight after that GF didn't they? And have never looked like recovering
okay, a quick check
12 wins
10 wins
3 wins!
7 winsso the cliff was a couple of years later.

@mariner4life This is why I find the Crows so distasteful: they beat us by one point in R10 last year. We were 9-0. They were 3-6. Hard to take. A two point loss in 2019 in R11 which was probably the final nail in our coffin that season after a shocking start. They kicked us out of the finals in 2002. There have been enough results like that to make me feel like Adelaide are a bogey team.
-
Think you can put a pen through a few teams after this week - Adelaide, North Melbourne, Freo. West Coast won't make finals but will improve as they get their players back.
Sydney look the goods. As it stands I'd tip a top four of Sydney, Brisbane, Geelong and Melbourne in some order.
Hard to tip the rest of the 8, given a few of last years finalists are already battling (Essendon, GWS, Port). Think the Bulldogs will come good, think Carlton will make finals, but beyond that it's a bit of a crapshoot. Collingwood and/or Hawthorn? Surely not.
-
There was some sort of Camp Staaldraad equivalent which seems to have destroyed their unity and they've just kept falling.
They're the biggest thing in SA so wondering how they can't find the talent, playing, coaching and admin, to fix it up.
They were fun when you could watch Eddie Betts ...

some interesting stats out of the weekend
It looks like "expected goals" is becoming a thing, and looking at games with scores against average goal scoring
I think "expected score" is effectively looking at the number of shots, and seeing what the score would have been based on the team's historical averages.
If average scoring was real life
The Suns beat the Demons
The Dogs beat CarltonPort Adelaide became the first team since these records began to have +50 disposals, +5 inside 50s, +10 clearances, +10 tackles, and lose the game.
Which all goes to show the only stat that matters is the total score.
(expected score is so bullshit)
-
At this stage, the whole comp is hoping for a "Richmond in 2018" type fuck up to stop Melbourne, who are far and away the best side to start the year.
Suns beating Carlton was fucking great.
I am far from sold on Brisbane. Losing to Geelong in Geelong is expected, but i think we've played average all season (except the witches hats v Norths).
Comp seems very even below the Demons, which is great. Upsets every week.

Gill McLachlan to stand down as CEO at the end of the year
Got the AFL through Covid, started AFLW. Both impressive and shade anything else. Can be considered a success.
-
@mariner4life the Gabba is a sell out for the Pies game, impressive. Obviously a lot of fans who are more optimistic and also maybe think more of the Pies than they deserve (let us hope).
-
only holds 42K and there are probably a few Victorians on holidays in Qld right now
-
🔴⚪️⚫️ just going along nicely…
-
Swans 121 - 58 West Coast
two things, ouch!...and i was going to comment on the fall of a recent champion, but then went a checked and their final was 2018!...COVID really has messed up my perception of time!

5 rounds in and we can make a few observations
Teams i have underrated
Melbourne: Yes i said they would make the GF, but teams that break long premiership droughts don't usually race out of the blocks. They are flying, team to beat by heaps.
St Kilda, Carlton and Freo, none of which i thought would play finals. And there they are, 4-1
Collingwood. Yes, only 2 wins, but watching them they play pretty well, still have a good list, and some dynamic youth. Won't play finals but won't be near the spoon either
Hawthorn. I am not shocked Mitchell can coach but didn't think they would amount to much this year.Teams i have overrated
Port. Lol 0-5 and done for the year. Fuck knows what has gone wrong there
GWS. Playing worse than the sum of their parts. Not sure how Cameron has kept his job this long. The best they have looked was the first half against Sydney before the coach put the handbrake back on
Dogs. Huge underperformance. I still think they will play finals because they aren't far off, but they have been very disappointing
Geelong. Will win lots at home and not many away. -
lol at GWS, and the Western Bulldogs
North and West Coast are lucky there is no relegation
Richmond are cooked
Hawthorn v Sydney was a really good game for a half. Then it got really ugly for the Hawks, and Sydney showed they are definite contenders. Freo beating Carlton was a bit of a statement too.
