3 rounds in and it's been an interesting start
Penrith far and away the best looking side so far. Soft draw you have to say, but going well.
Cowboys looked dogshit in W1, but have now won the next 2 and flogged the Broncos.
Speaking of the Dogs, they have started 1-2 but a points diff of only -5. They are not giving up a lot of points, which is probably the best place to start given their squad. Probably should have won yesterday
Manly are battling. Turns out you need more of a game plan than hoping Tommy Turbo carves up. No reason for it to be going this wrong though, they have a good side.Roosters got a touch up on Friday. They look really clunky in attack as they bed in their spine. Still too much talent to not be there when it gets serious.
The Bunnies much the same. Their halves are very ordinary, but they have a lot of really good players (how good has Murray started?)
Melbourne are battling away to start the year, and really need fit hookers and Munster to step up.
Cronulla the surprise package of the first couple of rounds, look really good. Even Moylan is playing like a competent first grade 5/8
Parra are 2-1 and seem to be going okay actually. I still have serious doubts, because, well, it's Parra and it's not the 80sJury is well out on what the Broncos, Dragons, Raiders, Knights and Titans are. Not contenders anyway. All battling away for a spot at the very bottom of the 8 is my guess.
Tigers and Warriors are at the bottom and still sinking. I don't see any hope in either club. There isn't exciting youth. There isn't a growth culture. There is band aid signings in a hope it will push them up the table. It won't.

Just on teh Warriors in general
This feels like a low point. And shit, Warriors fans know about those. As mentioned a couple of times since Saturday, this team is very very tough to watch.
They lost every notable stat on Friday, and if the Tigers were an NRL standard side, we would have lost by 10 (and probably should have given the non-review in the 1st half). Despite barely throwing an offload or creating a line break, we only completed at 74%. That's shithouse.
There are enormous structural issues at the Warriors, and yes, not playing at Mt Smart for coming up 3 years is about as bad as it gets, but
Look at the roster. It's absolutely chockers with bog average list cloggers who have a super low ceiling, and in a decent side would be role players at best. There is no attacking flair in the backs. No pace. The halves are incompetent, neither game managers nor game breakers. The pack is Curran and a bunch of workmen, who aren't actually that effective at working. And that's also not really NRL in 2022.
If the Warriors packed the side with young kids to develop them (with a few old heads thrown in to keep them pointed in the right direction) and a developing coach, we could actually get behind them. Would the results be any worse? Almost certainly not, but at least there is a reason to tune in every week.
The entire organisation is broken, and you know what, may not even be fixable.

Dont get me wrong I havent liked what I have seen so far, but I dont agree with all of this.
I actually think we have some good forwards, most of who are playing below their best in general and will also improve further when Tohu comes back. I dont also think our backs lack attacking flair, if anything they recruit more based on attacking capabilities, yet forget that holding on to the ball and defence is just as important, if not more important.
For me, I will wait and see with the halves, not one combo has lasted more than one match but their handling and decision making again has not been of the highest calibre at all. The other thing that has really disappointed me this year is the set ending with a hand over, we have to be the worst at fifth tackle options. Now we have signed Luke Metcalf and this kid really has talent, but if we keep losing I can guarantee he wont want to leave the Sharks. The only thing we can hope for is the Sharks stay fit and he doesnt get a run. I do think Kodi and CHT have checked out mentally. CHT because he doesnt know if he is wanted and Kodi because he wants to stay in Australia anyway.
They have been trying with some young kids, but their handling and tackling skills have been very disappointing. You cant cover the young blokes completely across the park. Curran is also young by the way, so funnily enough its the NZ young kids that tend to f**k it up more consistently, no wonder they try balance the team with australians that have defence inbred into them. Getting decent ones, cost money and retaining ones that might want to live in NZ is even harder.
The one thing I do agree with is the culture and attitude. Nathan Brown has a history of being the guy who can rebuild a club, but can't do anything with it. This looks like continuing. I suspect if this club stopped conceding penalties on the fourth or fifth tackle after holding a team in their own end, or consistently getting a repeat set after the fifth tackle, then a lot of these other issues go away. Brown has let them play more instinctively this year as opposed to last year where he told them to get the basics right first, seriously in a weekend of rain effected matches everywhere in Sydney that was not the play at all.
Anyway I still see potential with the roster, but it is performing way below where it should be. If Payten was still coaching here, I also suspect alot of the attitude on field is different as well and possibly we are 3-0 .

Knights surprised me, they did not give up even with 12 on the weekend and no Ponga, they will go better than I thought with an attitude like that. Parra always start well and are now 3-0 of beating Melbourne in Melbourne in their last three attempts, but they wont win the comp, they will fall away as expected as they normally do.

I'm not cutting him too much slack after 1 good win in his 2nd season with the Cowboys.

okay, good points but we are on different pages (you may watch closer than I)
I'm seeing a team with little attacking intent, or ability to attack, in to the 2nd year now. We lack real pace, and i am not sure where the game breaking players are. We need points, because we sure as hell aren't holding a team to 12 too often. And as you say, the ending to our sets sucks, so we can't grind a team down.
I'm pretty despondent
-
@mariner4life Its more that you cant score tries off every set. My ask is not that we become completely formulaic either, but you do have to grind more often than not. I suspect Berry and Vailea have points in them however their defence and handling is atrocious. Pompey is a centre but playing on the wing purely to help with defence but he cant finish like a wing. Ratuva and Kosi can finish but have weakneses.
The halves in the last game set up nothing for anyone outside, so that is exactly where I agree with you, Kodi and CHT have not offered much offensively of late. For the mistakes that both SJ and Taylor made previously they at least created some wholes for attacking raids, but this last weekend was dire.
I think most people are despondent, not a lot to like right now, but I imagine winning will help, which they somehow managed to do last week and their draw isnt the toughest to start.

Agree with your post in general but 100% agree with this. I've been saying this for years. I (and apologies in advance for being predictable) used to say it about the Magpies when we had a lot of imports - we then switched to promoting homegrown and decreasing imports and have been far more successful.
I know there are lots of fans who don't care what makeup the Warriors are, but to me, from their inception I've always believed they're a NZ team and should act in the interests of promoting league in NZ. They've managed to do the opposite with me. But, if as you say they were packed with young kids then I could get behind them.

The Warriors shipped talented NZ backline players over the last few years. The ones who remained or come in are all a step down.
For me, the we need Aussies myth has been blown out the window the last two years. The Warriors are filled with Aussies, and they're rubbish still. There hasn't been a NZer in the starting pack in the past 2 weeks.
I was done with this team last year, but assumed I'd eventually come back when the season started, but I don't think I can give a shit.
-
@nepia to be fair you could be up for a broken record award, the only contribution to this thread always finishes with I dont care anymore, yet here you are ..again :), as much as it pains you, I think you do care.
Lets just look at the some of these exports, try and name some of these so called incredible exports in our backline, specifically the young kids that were in the warriors system? Turner, Perham cant crack starting sides. From the older guys Fusitua was way past it and the only time he did well was when he was outside a young SJ. Maumalo was rocks and diamonds and continues to do the same for the Tigers. Hiku probably the only back that continues to dleiver high quality but not a kid. Herbert also has his positive moments except for doing what warriors do best and throwing away the gold coasts chance of making the finals last year. Its hardly a consistent flow of great young talent that you mention.
There are lots of great Pacifica/NZ talent in NZ, but the Warriors only get a small amount of them, Probably also why another NZ team has been mentioned.
It is a business and you cant keep them all, we have picked up DWZ, Montoya both are not allstars but showed more consistency and Montoya got the players medal last year. We stole Walsh away from the broncos who is a better talent than anything we let go, except RTS who we didnt sell for tactical reasons. I dont know if we will keep Walsh, but that is not the point.
Dont get me wrong we have added some plodders along the way (and always have) and I am not defending the culture or attitude or even half the recruits, but just using emotive comments with little susbstance is hardly a valid argument....ya ya i know its the fern

So how many weeks does Barnett get? That was pretty ugly. 6-8 weeks in my view.

It was ugly and the player impacted had to be replaced. I think 6-8 is going to be about right given they want to stamp this out, but the NRL are notoriously inconsistent .. so lets see how they roll the dice lol

It's early days yet by I'm trying to sew up the award early. Of course I care, I want a league team to support but I'm not a guy enthralled by Origin so the Kiwis and the Warriors are it. But, I've watched 40 minutes of Warriors this year and only because I was messaging with my uber league fan mate. At any rate I was just responding to M4Ls post and your response to him, just helping to keep the thread moving.
Anyway, all those guys you mention, even highlighting their downsides, are better than the current group we have - they don't all have to be young guys. Hiku, Maumalo, Herbert are better than Pompey and Berry for example. Fus' I wasn't even including as he seems to be mentally done (plus he's a Tongan traitor) but I reckon his try scoring success was down to Hiku more than Johnson.
Walsh will be gone soon, and he's rocks and diamonds anyway, he might turn into an SJ rather than a JT.

I've been commenting, with substance (if I do say so myself), on the Warriors for the past two years. I think you've even agreed with my comments at times.

Like I said, I didnt say they were all good, Pompey does look like a poor version of Herbert. Berry is still a young kid but right now looks like a deer in headlights.
Fus' I wasn't even including as he seems to be mentally done (plus he's a >Tongan traitor) but I reckon his try scoring success was down to Hiku more >than Johnson.
Really?, so after SJ left and Hiku remained, how many tries did he score? Hiku is the only player that you mentioned that I thought letting go was a terrible decision. I still rate him and he was part of that edge, but most of the try assist stats belong to SJ in 2018 of those scored by Fus, not Hiku and that was the year in question.
Walsh will be gone soon, and he's rocks and diamonds anyway, he might turn into an SJ rather than a JT.
He is still a kid with more talent than Pompey, Maumalo and Herbert lol

Of course if I think something is relevant I am not going to argue against it, but the above reference you made was without mentioning any examples ..wasnt one!
Look I still enjoy the game, a pissed off supporter like many, but I dont think everything that has been done is bad..(well, not all of it, hence calling that part of it out)

I'm happy if he gets rubbed out for ages because these are the type of shots we thought we had got rid of
Like how Latrell should have got 10 for caving in a dudes face (and a beautiful face at that)

i burst in to tears watching that
fuck remember the players we had? Just wildly entertaining attackers and massive forwards who could bash dudes.
Lauiti, iti, Toopi, Meli is the best left side attack i have ever seen.

wow..the bar is pretty low, still thought Latrell should have got more last year if you take into account the damage done
