Hamilton BHS and Westlake BHS's traditional preseason games today. First game for Hamilton while I was told that Westlake have played 3 games so far. There looked to be plenty of new faces in the Hamilton BHS team compared to last year, and a few missing. They certainly don't have the biggest forward pack. In fact Westlake BHS were bigger, but Hamilton BHS's speed out wide was the difference.
1st XV: Hamilton BHS 29 - Westlake BHS 5
2nd XV: Hamilton BHS 41 - Westlake BHS 0 -
A few more mid-week preseason results:
Wednesday, 13 April 2022
St Thomas CC 19 - 33 John McGlashan College
Liston College v Rosmini College ??Thursday, 14 April 2022
Lindisfarne College 5 - 38 Napier BHS
Hastings BHS 20 - 29 Kelston BHS
Rotorua BHS 31 - 12 De La Salle College -
@bovidae Feilding must have a really good squad this year. They've already beaten Hastings Boys, New Plymouth Boys and now St Pat's Silverstream. I know it's only preseason and not all squads are complete yet (Hastings Boys is still missing key players), but still quite impressive.

@stargazer And I don't think that Vernon Bason has played in all of their games either, certainly not the earlier games. I might go and watch FAHS when they play a CNI game in Hamilton. (Edit: vs St Paul's on June 25 might be the one).

A few of this weekend's games:

Nelson College v Tauranga BC - Sun 24 April 2022, at Nelson Coll -
The Super 8 teams have done well in the last week, beating some of the big schools from Auckland and the South Island. That suggests a very competitive Super 8 this season. It's hard to know if Auckland Grammar and Sacred Heart are really that weak until the 1A starts.

All teams will have lost plenty of players. The pre-season results have been all over the place.
For context, St John's are usually the 3rd rated of the Waikato CNI schools (behind St Paul's and St Peter's) but have attracted some named coaches. They could be on the rise again.

WBHS went down to St Kents 5-32, after trailing 5-10 at halftime.
WBHS apparently had a number of starters out, so not a bad effort by all accounts.

Hard to know how much to read into preseason. Combinations and game plans still coming together. Looking forward to the 1A comp this year after seeing some of these scores. Wellington comp looks to slowly be making a comeback, or maybe its just Scots and Stream
