@mn5 why would I take Root? He was no better than anyone else 1-4 in either lineup.
Crawley looks like he's got a core worth building on. Warner posted 2 decent scores. Harris 1 important score but still too many frailties.
Warner
Crawley
Khawaja
Smith
Head
Green
Carey
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Boland12th man: Wood.
Posts like this are a good reminder of why it is always dangerous to give an Aussie a pat on the back.
Bairstow outscored Carey this series in a single test. I guess you can argue that one test isn't enough of a sample size but you've gone and picked Khawaja.
Given how dominant pace bowling was this series Lyon doesn't deserve to be there (even though he was fine). Cummins was the pick for me and Boland must be included - but after that you have the rest who took 3-4 wickets a test @ 24-27. If the England batting is as terrible as we all agree then I don't see how you don't include at least one of those England bowlers - Wood, Broad or even Anderson as they faced the better batting.
Same goes for Smith over Root - given their records were very similar (although Root scored more at a higher average and quicker strikerate, with one more fifty) surely Root gets the nod as he faced what you seem to think was much better bowling?

Imma do these separately.

Four nil. An Innings victory. Two others by other a hundred runs. The first by 9 wickets.
I can pat myself on the back, thanks very much.

Exactly. And Khawaja performed twice against the "dominant pace bowling" (your words), while Bairstow did once, with a couple of starts in the role as batsmen.
In terms of small sample size - below you justify Root over Smith based on averages and strike rate. Khawaja with 85 @ SR55 beats Bairstow on that front, easily. So by your own logic, deserves his spot.

Lyon gets in because you need a spinner who can actually bowl. Starc you take as the left-arm option, which also assists in creating footmarks for Lyon. The others get there due to the effectiveness of bowling in partnerships.

Strike rate of 48 versus 47 and average of 32 versus 30 yeah OK chief.
As for the aggregate: Root scored more because he had 2 extra innings to do so - because his team was shit.
There's a reason Root hasn't got a ton on Australian soil: his technique is deeply flawed outside off stump. He had one dodgy bounce finish him off on Sunday night, but other than that refuses to adjust his technique to account for our wickets or those in NZ. If I was picking a team to play in England or the subcontinent, maybe he displaces someone else.
I can't believe you're picking Root as the consolation prize based on a couple of skinny numbers. Didn't know you kiwis dealt in everyone-wins-a-prize, but I gues with cricket you're used to it.

A good team woulda won 5-0. Australia are definitely on the decline.

99 wickets out of 100. Pathetic.

@nzzp they quite possibly will.
Or not renew his Contract even though he's stated he wants to continue - which amounts to the same thing.
Could we do a swap ya reckon?
shit, the last Aussie coach over here (John Buchanan) was not a success. Very very different environments.

Honestly @NTa I'm not sure if you are trying to take the piss or be taken seriously with your analysis of who should are in a combined team.
Given you pick all the Aussie bowlers, and no Pommy ones, it's absurd that you could pick Smith over Root with similar stats. As per your team of all Aussie bowlers, it means that Root only faced the top 5 bowlers, whilst Smith faced none of them. With similar stats, that's a clear advantage to Root. Talking about outside off technique as your reason is ridiculous and is fooling nobody.
Selecting Khawaja and then trying to justify anything around no Bairstow is flawed. Using excuses of keeping ability (Bairstow didn't keep all series), and then fat/unfit is ridiculous.
I don't really have a problem with no poms in a combined series squad. They got humped /owned and were never there mentally. But if you select by statistics & inferences, they deserve their spots.
As for your consolation prize jibe ... mate, you're the one waxing lyrical about a team who just had a great result in the bronze medal play off of the biggest tournament in the game.

The Ashes is just like the Bledisloe. Massively overrated despite one side being almost eternally shit bar a couple of out of character spikes in performance.
Neither are top draw sporting competitions.

You’re kinda right but every now and again it’s awesome. A player can have a relatively ho hum career and do some amazing stuff in the Ashes and be considered better than he is. Andrew Flintoff is a prime example.
The only thing that stopped a 5-0 drubbing was the weather and even then England barely held on. They need a massive overhaul if they’re to compete at the highest level again. Beefy, Boycs, Gooch, Gower and all those other players from yesteryear must tear their hair out when they pick up the newspaper each morning.
But then again ( I think it was you who said it ) England have never been a cricketing powerhouse in our lifetimes.

I was thinking about this a lot last week.
The comparison works on so many levels. Cricket in England is a private school game, whereas in Australia it's part of the culture at all levels. So despite the larger population they are drawing from a very narrow talent pool.
If each country could set the conditions for a game and have distinct geographical field identities then the Bledisloe would be much closer when played over here. Maybe we grow the grass to 60cm and learn to play in that. Or just play on gravel. But either way we play ALL our rugby on long grass/gravel from now on, at all levels.
The ABs would still win plenty of games on our weird fields, but there would be times where Beauden just gets stuck in the long grass and our guys smash him.
THEN we can truly get the rugby equivalent of the Ashes.

Disagree.
The Ashes is one of the few series left in sport that are played with real stakes. Careers end, players/coaches are dropped, genuine psychological scars seem to inflicted (often on your own team mates). There is a huge gap between the typical post-series interview with "they were the better side in the series" like you get with the Bledisloe and "we need to overhaul the entire domestic structure of our game" or "we need to ex-communicate our best batsman" or "we need to sack our captain".
That combined with cricket being a sport that lends itself to nostalgia makes it a great series.
So less like the Bledisloe and more like a prize fight where there is serious trash talk in the lead up and the result guaranteed to either going to be a 12 round classic or a first round knockout and whatever happens the loser is going to go into a two-year long spiral.
