Ashes 2021-22

Lot of maybes here. Could have declared with Khawaja on 70ish instead of waiting. Could have declared straight after he got 100, or when the lead hit 320.
But ultimately they got within a bee's dick, dropped 3 catches, missed a fairly easy runout, and couldn't death bowl well enough.
That's cricket

@nta I would assume Khawaja will open and Head will take his spot back in the middle order?
Nice fight shown by England to survive. Well outclassed on this tour but unlike 2013/14, they've shown that they do have a bit of ticker in their dressing room.

You don’t mess with a guy who has scored a couple of tons…….
BUT then again……series won, lots of time to and opportunity to fuck around and experiment etc.

@mn5 Khawaja's opened before where as Head is only really a middle order bat, both deserve to play in the 5th test and Harris has hardly cemented his spot in the side so its a no brainer for me.
Absolutely, envious position for a team to be in really. They have to exclude one crap batsman as opposed to several.
Right, I might head to the Black Caps thread to have a whinge.

What do England do ? Surely they have to get Burns in for Hameed. A potential streaky 30 or 40 is worth more than a poking and prodding single figure score.
Agreed. Also Billings should come in to keep with Buttler going home injured.
Further changes might depend on the extent of the injuries to Stokes, Bairstow and Wood.
Prob worth resting Starc for the final test so perhaps Richardson comes back in?

I reckon you only do that if you think Khawaja is your opener going forward - and I'm pretty doubtful that he is. That opening spot is Australia's only significant problem - if Harris is the guy they're backing as the long run option then dropping him isn't going to be productive.
Otherwise - you've got two number 5 batsmen - pick one of them.

The long term option is Pucovski.
Harris only made the team last year when he got injured. Harris was already a stop gap, replacing him with a better stop gap (Khawaja) makes sense

The Khawaja story is great. Seems like a genuinely lovely bloke who deserves success.
The question for the selectors is what they want to do in Pakistan. Khawaja's opening record is OK, and he's done well in the UAE in the past. With 9 tests on the subcontinent this year you'd think he'd get a game at some point regardless.
I do wonder if the decks were particularly dusty and slow they'd consider playing two spinners, an extra bat (Usman) and using Green as a second quick alongside Cummins.
-
@barbarian listening to Dodemaide on Saturday, Usman will be in the squad for Pakistan but it didn’t sound like he would be a dead certainty for the starting XI. And I think that’s understandable given his age, where he bats best in the current squad etc. But along with Steve Smith probably their best playing the spin.
Dream return to the team though.

I thought Khawaja had a reputation of not being good v spin over in sub continent? And that's why he got dropped his first time.
I've never seen him play there, so I don't know myself.
Thought that was a main factor in his bad away record.

None of our openers have really been consistent, but Harris' lone 70 doesn't really make up for a career of ordinary.
Put Khawaja in. Maybe Warner comes good for the last Test. Rest Starc for Richardson, I guess. Really depends on the pitch in Hobart.
England's selection far more straightforward: whoever can hold a bat.

After that drive from QLD to Sydney, he deserves it

Burns
Crawley
Malan
Root
Pope
Bairstow
Billings
Wood
Leach
Broad
AndersonHameed is done. Stokes and Buttler are injured. While Bairstow's thumb might not be 100%, he can bat well enough so stick with him.
Might as well stick with Leach as he started to get it right, even if he scored a couple of freebies.
-
A post-match comment from Root::
[Crawley] He's got a very good game, a simple technique that should stand up well. He's got the qualities to survive at this level.
Survive?! Mate that was the best innings for an English open on Aussie soil this season - excluding the BBL! Maybe I'm reading this wrong but not the sort of language I'd be using. He looked great.

Stokes could still play as a specialist batsman. His bowling hasn’t been up to much so not much of a stretch for him to do this.
