I guess none of us are privy to the discussions, but it seemed to me like Hall started last season as the Blues number one halfback, but around mid-season Guyton took that mantle off him and got the majority of the starts in the second half of the season (as a Mako$ supporter I was very happy about this).
Hard to think that Tana wouldn't have wanted to keep Hall if he thought he was significantly better than Guyton, given that No. 2 halfback isn't an unimportant position. And Pulu wouldn't be the first halfback to move franchises for a number one slot and then bomb (e.g. Kevin Senio).

@Chris-B Mate, your memory is due an upgrade. Guyton only started in rounds 2, 13 and 14. Hall started in all other rounds. By the way, I checked that.
Also, it's more likely that Hall wanted to move than that Tana wouldn't want to keep him. The announcement of Pulu's signing was made on 11 April 2016; Hall's signing with the Crusaders was announced on 9 June. I mean, why would Hall want to stay at the Blues if he has to do a step down from no. 1 halfback to number 2, while he can seriously compete for the no. 1 halfback spot at the Crusaders where he's replacing Ellis.

Fair enough - I would have checked myself, but frankly I couldn't be arsed. My memory was that Hall had lost his place after a drubbing in South Africa and Guyton played most of the remainder. Evidently incorrect. Possibly slanted by my impression that the previous season he also started out as number one halfback but gradually got supplanted by the other Mako$ halfback, Jimmy Cowan - possibly also incorrect (I haven't checked).

I don't think that really follows, though. If you're the number one halfback at a franchise, why wouldn't you want to stay and fight for your spot? It's only Pulu that they've signed and - if you're correct about Hall's place in the NZ pecking order, he'd have to be roughly 6th to Pulu's roughly 5th.

Bryn Hall didn't play the year prior (2015) as he was out pretty much all season injured. I don't think he played one minute for the Blues in 2015.
But yes Guyton was contracted for another year (2017) and they have young Nock signed up for a while. Based on this Blues would have known this when they signed Pulu that Hall would go.

Well, let's hope he turns out to be fucking good at the Crusaders. A revelation who is two steps up on Drummie would be most welcome!

Fuck Bryn Hall and Leon Fukofuka as the 2 halfbacks to choose from would hardly inspire me with confidence (both Blues outcasts as well). Maybe Jono Hickey could join as cover for Drummond as well.

They have tried to sign him before.
