Great, the ARU gets to blow more money fighting the Force in court.
-
If the reports are true, giving a bunch of cash to the owners of the Rebels may just be the best idea.
-
ARU own the Force ...
-
Alan Jones made a valid point this morning...the ARU has allowed SANZAAR to make them ditch a team, while retaining the Sunwolves...Aus have the ability to veto this as well apparently.
I don't think there is any doubt Aus need to cull one team, but what happens from now going forward will be interesting.
-
@taniwharugby all reports i have read say that the ARU actually want to cull a team, it's their decision, they simply can't afford the 5.
They aren't being pushed by SANZAAR, the NZRU aren't bullying them, the need to cut their costs, and that means one team needs to go. Of course the narrative on social media is very different.
The fact it's a decision made by the ARU will make it even more messy if the Force (or the Rebels) and the players union decide to get militant.
-
@mariner4life oh I agree, was just an interesting point by Jones, who obviously was looking inward...despite calling for heads last week as well.
Puts them in a tough place, they need more teams, but simply cannot sustain them.
-
The reality is the Force, now owned by the ARU, is costing them the most money. Now that the broadcast partner (FoxSports) has said they'll continue giving the same money for less product, the extra TV timeslot means nothing.
-
THE ARU has opted to give the Melbourne Rebels and Western Force more time to mount their cases for Super Rugby survival beyond 2017.
“We maintain our commitment to reaching resolution on this matter as soon as possible, however the timeline that we initially anticipated of 48-72 hours will not apply."
-
@KiwiMurph Doesn't look at all like the ARU are muddling their way through this rather than adopting a systemic, organised, methodical approach.
-
Speaking of which; interesting insights from the CEO of the Force. Particularly on the lack of consultation.
-
@antipodean Dane Haylett-Petty's ultimatum is interesting too.

What did he say?
Im hoping they cut the Rebels. Not exactly sure why. They just seem to be full of ring ins. Plus they were the last ones added.

It's in that interview with the Force's CEO that Antipodean posted. DHP has apparently said that if the Force is the team to be dropped from SR, he will leave Australia and play elsewhere. So they'll lose another Wallaby.
-
The Force have played nothing but low skill, low scoring, dogshit rugby for a decade now. Good riddance.

This .
The guy who says he'll leave the country if he doesn't get what he wants ? Yeah that attitude sucks, you probably don't lose much if he does fuck off .
-
@jegga It's not like he hasn't fucked off from the Force before.
-
@antipodean you're right ,he's played overseas more than he's played for the force in his pro career, in that light he comments look even sillier. I wonder if the wider rugby community will start to get annoyed with the force digging in especially with comments like his?

I agree with this on the basis that at least the Force have tried hard over the years to actually grow the game in an outpost. When they went for ring ins in the past they at least tried to bring in some perceived quality to up the skills of the rest and provide for the fans.
The Rebels just seem to chug along year after year scooping up the dregs from Australia and NZ (plus England if you count Cipriani) and then playing like the mediocre bunch they are. They aren't completely shit but they only serve to weaken the rest of the Oz squads by sucking out the reserve layer. -
Rebels have a far more talented roster than the Force do, but manage to squander it year after year.
Force are plucky battlers who get by on a mix of guts and effort, with very little skill. Makes them boring as shit to watch, though they have turned a corner this year and look to be putting forward one of their best seasons.
They've made big strides at the grassroots too. But the Rebels are privately owned so the ARU risk a big $$ payment if they chop them.

That's the way things have moved recently. The Force are bereft of quality at the moment but what they do have is mostly home-grown now isn't it? I assume due to finances.
The Rebels may have the money to entice a bunch of players to a starting gig instead of being squaddies elsewhere, but that is achieving little for the game and IMO is weakening the other teams.
I guess the big question is which team is in the better position to be stronger after 'the shrinking'.
If the Rebels go then much of their roster will rehome back with the Tahs and Reds, a few of the phone ins will move to Perth.
If the Force go then I am guessing their players (I don't know their origins) will disperse among the 4 others and not add a great deal overall. -
I wouldn't say the Force are mostly home grown, but they are certainly more home grown than they have ever been. Suggest there is about 8-10 guys in their squad who fit that bill.

ARU Chairman Cameron Clyne interviewed by former Wallabies coach turned shock jock Alan Jones this morning
-
@KiwiMurph Alan Jones is a raving fuckwit. What's the point in bringing a bloke on if you're not going to listen to him?
-
@antipodean I actually thought Clyne came across well considering the circumstances (he was also impressive on Kick and Chase a Fox Rugby Show last night). Jones is almost a satire of himself - a walking shock jock stereotype.
-
Jesus fucking christ, trying to listen to that interview turned my brain into goo. Alan Jones is a raging fuckwit. First, he bitches and moans about Australian rugby propping up Japan, failing to see the irony in that when his big grand idea is a trans-tasman competiton. Second, he bitches and moans about the expansion to 18 teams as if the Sunwolves, Jaguares and Kings are the reason Australian rugby doesn't have the depth to support five teams. Third, he talks about SANZAAR as if Australia gets to call all the shots. There's plenty of other idiotic shit in there but I couldn't listen to any more.

I wouldn't be surprised if he'd channeled Murray Deaker inside him.
You'd think Alan Jones time of being someone who's opinions people gave a fuck about would have finished a long time ago .
-
@antipodean I was going to listen to the interview but there's little point. Jones has an agenda and it's obvious that the contrasting way he treated both guests (Sauer and Clyne) reflected that.
-
@Bovidae talk back radio doesn't really work if you permit people to talk back.
-

This is interesting
I can believe that. When I was there I came across a lot of rugby folk that were very big on their club and the Wallabies but didn't connect with Super Rugby much at all

"Alan Jones" and "valid point" makes me think of stopped watches.
But what that reads to me is, if Straya could have vetoed it, they are happy and actually want to ditch a team.
The more I think about it the more I want the Force retained.
Think the Brumbles and the Rabble should form some sort of merged entity.

What he said...
... just realised I'm three days late getting back to this thread.
-
@booboo I agree, they cannot afford a team, but the point that Aus are losing a team but sunwolves remain is valid IMO
Hopefully without spreading thier talent so thin, they'll start to get stronger again...I think the rebels should be canned too
-
and yet we have been told regularly it has been the SA's pushing for expansion to accomodate thier massive player base and as they provide a substantial portion of the income, they get what they want...

Also every couple of years they'd drop stories into the press about how they were going to join the NH comp because the time zone was better or similarly contrived reasons.
The stories normally came out when the money from supperugby or more teams being added was up for negotiation which was just a coincidence I'm sure. -

It's only a "good point" if the funds that're going into the Sunwolves came out of Australia's share of the broadcasting rights but going by Clyne's reaction to that, it doesn't. They're not getting any less money than they were before the Sunwolves joined. So at that point it's just protectionist nonsense, pointing to a different team that pays for itself as a distraction while plugging your ears and screaming LALALALALA when anyone brings up your own problems.
-
@Unco as I said, I, as in me, think it is a valid point when you consider they are dropping an AUssie team while keeping a Japanese team, in the interest of Aussie rugby, that aspect is not good, but the fact Aussie rugby cant sustain 5 teams, probably even 4 is a struggle at the moment, then the point is irrelevant, they could keep a team from Mongolia and it wont affect Aussie rugby.
Its a shame Japanese rugby isnt all in for super rugby and have all thier best players contracted though.
