NZ v Australia Test #1
-
The pitch was doing plenty but fuck me some of our dismissals were shit. Playing at balls not even threatening the stumps. Given how quickly the pitch flattened out you'd hope survival would have been at the top of the list of priorities in the first session. We get through that first session then suddenly the pitch gets a bit easier and we have the advantage of bowling last.

And to make matters worse we'd done exactly the same thing the previous two tests at the Basin - learn a lesson guys!

The toss was important but not the reason we lost. -

I agree with Flem.

I'd be quite happy to see a pitch which only had 200 runs (max) in it per innings. Looks like our best chance of a favourable result.

Who is this Rupert Bool character and is he deport-able?
-

Our last test was Dec 22 2015 against the Lankans and since then we've had a steady diet of slap and giggle cricket. It looked like we never flicked the switch back into test mode and the aussies were quite proficient at helping show our boys the way back to the pavilion
-

Other nations have always tailored pitches to suit their strengths, I can't see why we don't do a bit of the same, especially in a must win game
-

I think it is because Munro gives no indication that he can actually guts out an innings. He basically slogs at domestic level which translates to a very good T20 player but maybe not a great test number 6.

Munro reminds me of that fat slogger we gave 1 test to as an opener on the basis of his first class statrs? Ingram?

Had a cracking 1st class record on the basis on standing still & heaving everything which worked against the non spinning spinners & 125kph opening bowlers he came up against in NZ 1st class.
-

Ingram

I actually thought Redmond was OK. Not good... but not awful.
-

It's still worth giving these guys a go though if there is no one else putting their hand up.

If we had of introduced Munro into the 6 position a few years ago we would now have the option of him moving up to 5 to replace McCullum and having Neesham, Santner and Nichols battling it out for the NO 6 spot underneath a settled and experienced top 5. Instead pissed around at 6 with players based on potential rather actual achievement at 1st class level and we are facing a difficult couple of years with a completely unsettled middle order with no idea who can do the job at 5 and 6.

We did introduce Munro a few years ago (into the 7 position with BJ at 6) and he was awful in his opportunity. Admittedly it was only a single surprise stop-gap selection after the carnage the week before.

Its not that he looked breezy v Steyn, Morkel, Philander in the second dig. It's his first innings duck where he was all at sea v Robin fucking Petersen.

Anderson came in 5 tests later and scored a ton in his second test. Neesham came in and scored a ton on debut and then replaced Anderson after an injury and got a second ton in about his 3rd test.

Its about taking your opportunities. Munro hasn't been hard done by as a prospective test player, but he has had deserved more opportunities in the short forms. BTW, His bowling gets worse each year, his career bowling average is extremely misleading of his current abilities.

Munro doesn't look like he has a test game in him. I'm assuming he agrees as he isn't playing Plunket Shield at the moment - I assume hes off gigging in a T20 league?

He's nailed a place in the blackcaps T20 team now though, and will almost certainly get a permanent ODI spot now Baz is off and Elliott is getting on.

Anyway; the attacking allrounder at 6 in a test team is a bit of luxury - a luxury we've been able to enjoy as our 3, 4, 5 and 7 have been nailing it for 3 years. Shuffling our allrounders in and out won't overly affect the progress of this team in the next 2 years.
-

Yeah Ingram was selected on the back of a good first class season, I'd never seen him bat before his debut and when I saw him, I couldn't believe he had been selected. Literally planted his feet and hit through the line.
-

A slightly less-fat Jesse Ryder?
-

Ryder was technically pretty good. Had footwork for starters. Comparing Jesse to Munro & Ingram is like comparing Lara to Ken Rutherford.

Munro had a few stints in the UK, was WAAAAY off the pace 4 day level even for the 2nds & got a decent gig as a T20 slogger. Which is his area.

He can probably pull in $300k a year just playing T20 in 5 different places for the next 10 years. Its not a bad area to be in...
-

Ingram was the guy you select when you've had a quick flick through the cricinfo averages and you can't afford or be arsed to actually go and see him play. He must have had an eye like a dead fish, because his set up would have to have been one of the worst I've seen.

Selectors hoping to pull a rabbit out of a hat with little regard to the likelihood of success.
