NZ v Australia Test #1

Yippee Skippy.... errr Kiwi!

I've been waiting all summer for this and the forecast looks reasonable until Sunday evening.... plenty of time to clean up this rabble.....

I see Southeee is playing for ND to test his fitness/injury. Did Boult do much damage to himself?

Soooooooooo

Guptill

Latham

Williamson

Nichols

McCullum

Watling (???)

and the bowlers........ :)

I have no idea who they will go for given injuries
-

Batting looks weak without Taylor there. Maybe it is just on paper but thats the way it looks. Need a big series from Latham.

Santner is seemingly out replaced by Craig. Hope he has a point to prove.

I would like to see Matt Henry play and open the bowling with Boult in NZ conditions. Southee as first change make him earn the spot back.
-

As much as I would like to see 4 genuine bowlers play I think the batting is a little light without Taylor and Santner which means Anderson has to play ahead of Bracewell or Henry.

Latham

Guptill

Williamson

Nichols

McCullum

Anderson

Watling

Craig

Henry

Southee

Boult
-

Yep, Rosco is a massive blow to our chances. But, we won't be lacking for self belief and I think we will give this a real good shake. I just hope the pivotal moments go our way as they really didn't in Adelaide.

It's not an ODI so Southee is the first pick and doesn't have to play his way back in as leading test bowler.

I'd also like to see Henry there. I don't see the need for Craig. Bring in Sohdi if you want an actual spinner, otherwise Williamson can do what Craig does and may even be effective
-

This aussie team is without many of the big names that have terrorized us in the past. I reckon we have a strong chance to knock these guys over in our own backyard. I would like to see Rosco back but we have young guys ready to step up. Kane needs another big series I'm afraid

-

I don't recall ever being so excited about an upcoming series. I mean the one in Oz was great but there was still the hang up from just winning the Rugby and the fact it was over there. Now we have two ( should be three, fluffybunnys ) tests in our own backyard. I agree that the batting all of a sudden looks brittle without Taylor there, to me he is automatically second name down on the teamsheet, he's that important to the cause. Big test for Nicholls if he is the guy who gets the nod. By Black Cap standards our opening pair is truly extraordinary in their consistency. After enduring some donkeys for, well decades, it's great to see some solidity. I think Anderson will get the slot at six and definitely roll the arm over quite a bit. I'm anticipating quite a battle between him and the Neesh over the years for that spot because as much as I am a fan of both and as talented as both are it's hard to see spots for BOTH in the team long term. Watling needs to rediscover the grittiness, he's been poor lately.

As for the bowlers I get that Craig get's in by default, if I was selector Williamson would bowl a bit although as our best batsman and soon to be captain this may be a bit much for him to handle. I hope Craig proves me wrong, despite his diabolical record I will admit he has had his moments. If Santner comes on as hoped and Sodhi gets more chances he's just a stop gap anyway.

A choice between Southee, Boult, Bracewell, Wagner and Henry ( I'm not sure the injury status of any of these guys admittedly ) ? Shit we're a long way from Robert Kennedy, Heath Davis and Richard De Groen. Looks like Bracewell, Wagner and Henry will be scrapping for that third seamers role, hard to see them go past Henry which is rough on the other two but shows our depth. It's a great time to be a Black Caps fan, let's enjoy it while we can. Hasn't rained in Welly for fucken ages so that might be asking a bit much for five more days of the same, I hope I'm wrong.

NTA, any chance you can give us a run down of the likely Australian team ?
-

Dead certs in the Aus side Warner, Khawaja, Smith, Voges, M Marsh, Neville, Hazlewood Lyon. Burns will probably retain the opener spot. Pattinson will probably get one of the seamer spots, and it'll be out of Siddle and Bird for the other spot.

Bit of green on top and a few of those guys are going to be vulnerable. Burns will edge a heap with his lack of footwork, i see Voges as vulnerable as well. Heaps of runs still there though. Hazlewood, Pattinson and Siddle are good enough to roll us with a bit of assistance, and then Lyon is good enough to run through us if it starts to turn.

A lot is going to depend on the pitches. And someone else is going to have to stay with Williamson without Taylor there. Looking at the teams, they look far less reliant on one guy for runs than we do on Williamson.
-

Is Khawaja opening ? if so I see parallels with Justin Langer, tried at number 3, plays like shit, gets dropped but then comes back as an opener and has a steller career.

The BCs do rely on Williamson but they have Guptill in great form, Latham almost quietly achieving compared to others, a young guy eager to do well on debut and McCullum determined to go out on a high. I don't think the gulf is as great as you say.
-

This is what I'd like to see.

But these selectors are very loyal, so I suspect Bracewell may play ahead of Henry.
-

Great ODI form but often that doesn't translate to Test form, especially for Guptill. He just doesn't seem to have the right shot selection when playing tests. In saying that, he did OK in the Aus leg of the series??
-

Agree, some guys are better suited to different formats and Guptill has been found out at test level on a number of occasions but as I alluded to have a look at some of the walking wickets we've had there in our recent past. He's still an automatic selection at the moment.

Speaking of walking wickets cricinfo tells me Ronchi is on standby if Watling doesn't get over a niggle ( wakes up in a cold sweat )
-

Nope, NTA would gladly murder Mitch Marsh if he could get away with it.
-

Looks to be a green seamer but we all know that NZ pitches are all talk, no pork in terms of greeniss. Won't be terrified to lose the toss and put in

Though I'll have to revise my opinion if he keeps scoring runs with any consistency.

His brother can fuck off.
