Wellington v Hawkes Bay

I heard on the radio commentary that the weird Wellington selections were not due to injuries.
I find that hard to believe, Plumtree for example would have been starting if he was available, at the very least a reserve lock over Thompson.
Not taking anything away from Hawkes Bay but we also still have a few players missing aswell. However, once again led by Ash Dixon HB dominated up front and set a great platform for their backs to do their thing. A great first half so well done.
On Wellington, they need to shift Love back to 10. We just look so much better when he’s running the cutter. As a whole, we aren’t playing as a team and we look highly disinterested across the board.
Blackwell showed in this game why he gets the shit that he gets on the Fern. Absolute dire performance from him, falling off tackles left right and centre and getting dominated by his opposition. Fidow was also crap, Ive had plenty of patience with him but he just isn’t cutting it and I think the Canes need to depart ways with him.
The BoP v Wellington game could be a battle for relegation at this point.

@canes4life I think you were lucky to have Thompson on the field, with his two tries in the 8 minutes he played. He should have been Wellington's starting hooker. Today's starter was terrible and O'Reilly wasn't much better.
-
@stargazer of course he should have been, he probably would have been aswell but Thompson had a game to forget last week which would have counted against him when they selected this weeks team.
Anyway it’s history now, at least it wasn’t a Bay sweep over Wellington this w.e with the Wellington Under 19s thumping HB on Saturday. Our top team could really do with Riley Higgins, I don’t care if he’s 19, he really does look like an impressive footballer.
-
@canes4life Not sure about the Under 19s but with limited numbers in the Bay you would expect a few of the HB Under 19 squad would have been unavailable due the the NBHS match against HBHS.

@stargazer It was certainly a day to savour as I was there at Athletic Park the last time we dumped them on their own dung heap way back in 1977 when we won something like nine six, ten six or it might have been ten nine. It was such a long time ago that things are a bit hazy but I do know we had the strong wind in the first half and there were no points scored in the second half despite about 90% of that half being played inside the HB 25. To think I would be excluded from the 300 Sponsors/VIPs allowed into the ground today to witness a long awaited away win was disappointing. I suppose watching at least one and a half games pretty much every Saturday in Wellington over the last twenty plus years counted for nothing. That does not take into consideration all the Saturday morning rugby nor midweek secondary schoolgirls encounters when my granddaughters were playing (that was truly an ordeal!!!!!!) and only adds to the disappointment. At least the HBRFU were gracious enough to let a few BoP supporters (Hori BoP amongst them) in last week. despite also having to operate under crowd number restrictions.

I was also there this miserable mid week day at Maidstone Park when Sireli Bobo played for Wellington against HB and think we got close but don't think it was an official first class fixture. Think it was around 2002 or thereabout but cannot find anything about it on google. Hopefully @stargazer will have better luck?
This may (or may not) be a picture from that particular game.

Bobo played for Welly in either 03 or 04. I remember him making a couple of Hurricanes games in 04, so it may have been the same year.

@higgins Sorry, I couldn't find it either. He was named in the Wellington XV squad in 2003, and the Wellington Lions in 2003 and 2004.
Edit: I found this article:
Centre Willie Lafaele stole Christian Cullen's thunder as a Wellington XV beat Hawkes Bay 38-11 in a representative rugby match on a soggy Maidstone Park in Upper Hutt yesterday.
All Blacks selector Mark Shaw and most of the 1000-plus crowd had come to see All Blacks discard Cullen make New Zealand coach John Mitchell eat humble pie, but left none the wiser after the fullback produced an unconvincing display.
It wasn't that Cullen played badly. He scored a good individual try, sparked several counter-attacks, including engineering a 60-metre effort to wing Sireli Bobo.
But he kicked aimlessly at times and generally appeared to lack the urgency of a player who should be on the brink of World Cup selection.
In contrast, former NZ Colt Lafaele was a ball of energy, outstanding in all aspects of the game.Looking at the finalc score, it wasn't a close game.
