Eddie Jones confirms he's finishing up at England after RWC2023
-
"Eddie Jones has ushered in the “last chapter” of his England tenure after revealing his intention to leave the role after the 2023 World Cup ... Jones will be England’s longest-serving head coach in history when his contract expires after France 2023 and on Tuesday he said he was embarking on his final two years in the job."
Not a big surprise, but with Eddie you never know. He still has strong links to a club in Japan (Suntory Goliath) so I expect he'll "retire" to a DoR-type role over there.
RFU have huge cash, will prefer a marquee coach after Eddie's success, and no doubt have a short-list of candidates. I can't see any local candidates who look up to it (or would want the stress tbh). I do wonder if Mitch got a clear internal steer he wasn't on the shortlist and headed off to Wasps as it was a strangely timed move pre-RWC.
Who'll be available then? Gats and ...
More importantly, what commitments have NZR made to Scott Robertson after the RWC 2023? Assuming he's even only potentially available, I'd be amazed if Razor is not high up on a England shortlist.

Um nope. They blew all their cash by around 2018 and have been cost cutting since. Add on covid they're actually in a dire financial situation. They certainly have the ability to build it back up tho.
As to Robertson, if he didn't get the head coach job he's gone. He had the first post RWC year signed up, but with the option to leave. Read that as I'll stay with crusaders until I either get ABs in 23 or leave. Until that point he's safe in NZ.
I think RFU will have to choose an English candidate, politically, and cockerill is in place ready to go.

Yeah true and I know that. Should have said "they have the ability to pay huge cash".
They went over £30 million on Twickenham redevelopment plus international player fees and club compensation have ballooned.
Still, he was reportedly on a £750,000 in 2019, took a 25% cut in 2020 along with all top RFU execs after Coronavirus. Still on £500-550K+ pa now I'd guess.
Can't see it being Cockerill. That looked a reactionary hire because Mitch left.

NZRU (in Dec 2023): It is my great pleasure to welcome the new coach of the All Blacks.
NZ journalists hold their breathe (behind their masks - yes they are still wearing them thanks Cindy) and cameras start clicking
NZRU: Welcome Eddie.
Eddie: thanks for the welcome. I thought I had a 50% chance of being the AB coach going into the process, but after the interview I was feeling confident and thought about a 76.5% chance.

NZRU: Welcome Eddie.I thought he'd implode but strangely his "my way or the highway" autocratic style really worked with England. Inheritted a good squad then at a low-point so the only way was up.
He deliberatley throws out a lot of b_llsh_t designed to keep the UK press busy and off his back (which is critical here) and stayed onside with their darling i.e. Owen Farrell.
Must have been good at expectation setting and managing upwards, so he didn't get knifed by the RFU in the odd bad season England had.
Apart from the odd spat which he learned to retreat from fast, he managed to stay out of the huge local England rugby politics and club vs country squabbling "Not my problem maaaaate, I just coach!"
6 Nations winner 3 times, runner up once I think.
Beat the ABs and reached a RWC final. Which was sad, but fair f*cks you have to respect it.Never seen a coach with his style
Very shrewd guy, huge rugby brain, I rate him ... but not as AB head coach in a million years!
-
@l_n_p The mantle of UK Darling has been passed over to Itoje some time ago. Already one of the greatest ever apparently.
I like Eddie, I really do. I'd happily accept him as the AB's coach. I think he's got one of the smartest rugby brains on the planet, does an excellent press conference, and often has that twinkle in his eye that he's just stirring shit up.
HIs weakness in the RWC 19 was to focus far too much on the AB's that he didn't really have gameplan to beat the Boks. I think if he was Lions coach, they would have won 3-0. As the Wallabies have shown that if you don't walk straight into their gameplan (as both England in 2019 & the Lions did) they are extremely vulnerable. Eddie would have figured that out.

I like Eddie too. Got to meet him a number of times when he coached the Brumbies.
Funny story, I think I may have shared here before, I’m at the NZ v OZ schoolboys game in 2005. Oz team is loaded with talent - Beale, Cooper, Turner, Pocock, Jack Lam, Lilo. Close game and near the end, OZ hot on attack and the NZ no8 Comman (I think) gets over the ball, I yell out “he’s on his feet ref”, ref blows penalty against Oz for holding on and the crowd starts booing. Eddie (and his missus) was sitting right in front of me and he turns around with a wry smile on his face and said “good call”. Nz won by 3.
We had a chat after the game about the game too. He asked me who he should look out for in future from the NZ team and I said, see that tall skinny kid there, he’s got a future - I pointed at Sam Whitelock 😉 I also said I thought Renata could be good, so 1 out of 2 isn’t bad….
Got to meet him at social functions and stuff and he just loves the game and is happy to share an insight or 3.

@act-crusader his book is good reading.

I don't think there's a better rugby brain in the game, or that I've seen one since Wayne Smith.
Stylistically he's one-man band. Wrecking ball with his coaching team who are either discarded or have had enough after 2 years or so. Plus I don't see any evidence he believes much in player development at international level ... wants the finished article for his gameplan now assesses players through "deep-ending". So lots of fringe players and up-and-coming talent get brutally cut short and never re-considered.
He'd get results as AB Head Coach no doubt! Not convinced he'd leave them in a better place than he found them though.
-
Lots of chatter over here including coaches who have previously publically disavowed any interest in the England role or (like Pat Lam) are on long-term stable deals.
Assuming an Englishmen the name making sense is Steve Borthwick, Head Coach of Leicester Tigers. Part of the England setup from 2015-2019, from memory, line-out then forwards coach.Joined Leicester, then was promoted to Head Coach.
Borthwick, with Cockerill staying on as forwards coach I could see happening.

Would be great if we can knock them out of the RWC. Give him a good going away present.
Hopefully a 50+ to nil thrashing that will haunt him forever. Hate his smugness.

Our old friend, Eddie Jones, has been upsetting UK tennis fans with some remarks he made about Emma Raducanu.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/59206538
Storm in teacup stuff. Marcus Smith's agents will be delighted that he has been mentioned in print many times in the last 24 hours in the same sentence as Emma Raducanu.

Emma R may go a long time before she makes another slam semi. The combination of Covid/draw and unusually fast Flushing Meadow courts was perfect for her. UK press is treating her as if she's already in top 10.
I thought Eddie was on the money.
-
@pakman I think it is the fact Eddie Jones called her "that girl" which has upset some people more than anything else. He entitled to his opinions and to manage his players as he judges correct.
Very hard indeed IMHO to criticise Emma Raducanu for trying to make more than a few quid on the back of her US Open win to be honest. At the very least she will have helped her parents pay off their mortgage. Be interesting to see how she goes at the Grand Slams next year which will be her performance priority rather than the smaller tournaments she's been playing at since.
-
@sparky said in Eddie Jones confirms he's finishing up at England after RWC2023:
@pakman Have you got evidence that's the guess? From what I gather her work ethic is basically off the scale.
No evidence. But that's the type of distraction Eddie was referring to.
Anna Kournikova/Ana Ivanovic/Martina Sharapova and Eugenie Bouchard are famous examples of historic underperformance after very strong starts.
