Also, was it me or did enari (HB 9) have a really good game, fast ball all night
Yeah I thought he played well, worked hard to get to rucks quickly, and only learnt 90 seconds before kick off that he'd have to play the full 80.

@delicatessen I saw Connor McLeod being helped by the physio back into the changing rooms as the team went back inside to complete whatever they do about 7 minutes prior to kick off. I can only summise that you must declare your matchday 23 to the referee and opposition maybe half an hour before kick off and any injuries etc after that time it is just bad luck and there is no provision for any late additions. Guess that must be to even things up for visiting teams who obviously would not have access to a third halfback for example that late in the game.

I think they said Kienan Higgins came on to the bench to replace him, which was why he wasn't wearing a number, so I assume the Magpies didn't have a halfback on hand.
*Any relation?
-
@nepia No All my grandparents (and father) are from the UK and Ireland and we have very few relations in NZ. Having said that Higgins is simply a moniker I got lumbered with by the guys at Napier Tech about 40 years ago and carries no connection to my real name, other than it's obvious Irish origin!

Yep that's right. They were talking about Higgins only being told 90 seconds beforehand, so I'm presuming that's when Enari discovered he was the only halfback as well.
Which would make sense given our other two are unavailable (fakatava injured, weber doing his press internship with the ABs - https://www.allblacks.com/videos/exclusive-in-the-sheds-with-brad-weber-bledisloe-cup-two/).
Any ideas who they'll bring in next if Mcleod isn't a quick fix?

No idea, some of the guys more familiar with the club scene ( @Number-10 @Stargazer ) will have a better idea.

Ash Dixon is a late withdrawal.
One newspaper article says illness, the other says injury. Hopefully, he was just out for this game, and will be back next weekend, because we play Canterbury away.
Anyway, because Kereru-Symes was injured too, our third choice hooker Devery was starting and I thought he did a great job. The reserve hooker (Symington) would normally have played for our development team in the afternoon game against Poverty Bay.
@canes4life said in Hawke's Bay v Otago (Ranfurly Shield):Where is Walker-Leawere for this match? Is he injured?
Shoulder injury sufferend in the club rugby semi-final between his club Clive and Hastings R&S on 10 July. Officially (in the media), he has been ruled out for the season, but as said earlier, they may be hoping for an early return.
@kiwimurph said in Hawke's Bay v Otago (Ranfurly Shield):Enari much better this week.
Agreed. He showed this week what I hoped to see. It will be interesting to see how he goes against his old team, next weekend, playing against Drummond instead of being stuck behind him.
@nepia said in Hawke's Bay v Otago (Ranfurly Shield):Sheesh, Higgins looks a bit slow for midfielder.
He hasn't convinced me yet, but he's not really slow going by what I've seen in the Shield defences against Heartland teams. Still very, very green.
@taniwharugby said in Hawke's Bay v Otago (Ranfurly Shield):Lowe deserved that, he's played bloody well although mostly defensively until then.
Every time he has a great game like that, I think how stupid the Canes have been by not giving him enough game time. Admittedly, he's had injuries, but they had plenty of opportunities to select him and didn't. Several years of his career wasted in the stands. Glad the Chiefs picked him up and I really hope they've re-signed him (I don't trust Gatland).

Sweet, part one of the double feature was successful, come on the ABs.
triple feature. Curtain raiser as well. 80-6 to the Tui's
Quadruple for me. The Tui had a very good game, but it was against the weakest team in the FPC. They just smashed them better than the rest. Got 3 out of 4, yesterday. If Hastings Boys' can pick themselves up after this loss (and I think Karl Lowe and Sona Taumalolo will make sure that happens), they should play in the Top 4 anyway, because they should beat any Wellington school they'll face in the Hurricanes semi-final and - most likely - Napier Boys' in the Final.

Correct, I heard that, too.

The next in line is Zach Donaldson. He's been our back-up's back-up for a few years now. He was also the reserve halfback in the Ranfurly Shield game against North Otago. Not a player you want to start a game with.

There were always better options at the Canes than Lowe and he didn’t do himself any favours being injured. He always seems to play well at this level but seems a bit limited for me at Super level. Don’t blame the Canes at all for not selecting him and he didn’t do anything special for the Chiefs this year.
Also, Danny Toala did not impress me in this game. He looked disinterested and was found wanting a few times on defence. Will need to pick it up if he wants a Super contract. Ili was more of a standout to me.
There are two midfield spots open at the Canes so it will be interesting to see who gets those.
I thought Enari had a tidy game so it will be interesting to see if he can sneak a Super contract at the Chiefs or Canes. Feels like there is a lot of competition though.

Of course, you would say that.

Of all our backs, he made most tackles (9) and only missed one.
-
@stargazer am I wrong? Who should he have been starting in front of?
There were a couple clean breaks through Toala’s channel which probably are not considered in those stats. I’m a actually a fan of his by the way so I hope he can find some form through the NPC.

Ash Dixon didn't play because of food poisoning.
Connor McLeod is apparently out for the rest of the season.

Holy sh*t, Enari is the last 9 standing. So our 5th choice halfback will be brought into the squad. I guess that's Donaldson, assuming we can no longer bring someone else in from elsewhere (because there are no good halfbacks left in the country). What's Alby Mathewson doing these days? Michael Ruru?
If Enari goes down, we're doomed. Maybe they should convert Makene into a halfback.

Yep, he stuffed his knee in the warmup.
His replacement will probably be Zach Donaldson.
The halfbacks in the Development Team's three matches in the last three weeks have been Trent Hape, Humphrey Sheild and Shamara Brooks.
Although ... I did see Aidan Thomas at the game yesterday - it was Saracens Day ....
