He will finish up in his role in just over three weeks.<br>The 38-year-old, who has a wife and two young kids, found the time on the road too demanding. Coach Mike Hesson told media earlier this week that he had only spent 23 days at home in 2015 in an indication of the travel commitment. <br>"It has been really tough being on the road for a long time," he said on Friday at a press conference at the team hotel in Auckland. <br><br>"We thought we could get by it, but it is a little bit tough and I thought I would make the right decision by them [his family]."<br><br>Mascarenhas made the decision to finish with the Black Caps before Christmas. He thought long and hard about the call and admitted that it wasn't an easy decision.<br><br>He said there were no issues with any of the players or support staff behind the decision. <br>"I have a great relationship with all of the squad, the players and the support staff so the decision is purely based on family. it is time for me to go home and spend some more time with them." <br><br>Mascarenhas felt like he had added value to the Black Caps bowling stocks in his eight months with the team. <br>He admitted that there were some tough times, citing the recent tour of Australia as demanding from a bowling unit point of view, but believed the team was in a good state at the moment. <br><br>"We have got a number of fast bowlers around the country who are producing really good performances and long may that continue."<br><br>He has seen great improvements in all of the bowlers has worked with. He said the fact that the oldest bowler is just 30 years of age, in Mitchell McClenaghan, is exciting for the future. <br><br>"The rest of them are all under 30 and have a long way to go. If they keep improving the way they are at the moment the sky is the limit for a number of them."<br><br>Mascarenhas said the high turnover for international cricket teams' support staff was not surprising considering the significant demands of the roles. <br><br>"I think not just bowling coaches. I think any support staff [struggle]. It is 12 months of the year now, there is no season or time off, it is full on and that does take its toll. Everyone deals with it in their own way but for me it is the right time to move on." <br><br>Mascarenhas has nothing lined up but is keen to stay in cricket and wants to stay working as a bowling coach. <br>"That is what I love. I have loved every minute of this with the guys and that is what I want to keep doing."<br>New Zealand Cricket has not named a replacement for Mascarenhas.<br><strong> - Stuff</strong></p></blockquote><br>Obviously no Shane Bond, The Anus' record is mixed in a very short tenure. <p>Look for an Aussie BBL bowling coach, it'd be hard to tempt them but those guys are at the cutting edge of bowling skills knowledge and coaching I reckon.</p>

<p>The issue isn't their T20 bowling. Its their test bowling. Southee under Bond was getting really good at hitting line & length when it didn't swing. Then Bond went & Southee rocked up post IPL & tried to bowl 6 variations an over in tests. And was shit.</p>

<p>Agree they only need to do a few stints a year with a 2nd stringer there right through, we don't play enough tests to warrent a top coach 365 days. Maybe Kyle Mills supporting Vaas or something. </p> -

<p>Yeah I see what you mean. It wasn't so much the T20 I was thinking of but conditioning and the science that I <em>think </em>the Aussies have got a handle on (even though lots of theirs get crocked gulp).</p>

<p>You raised a good point about our bowlers (who've basically changed our fortunes) being out so much. I think having them fit has to be a big KPI for the next coach</p>

<p>I liken it to NZ rugby coaches being top the pack. I think Aus bowling (cricket) coaches are similar.</p>

<p>A very short tenure, no real improvement, and moving on for family reasons, which surely he should have known beforehand, being a former international cricketer himself.</p>

<p>Wonder who they might go for this time - someone single? An older coach? Or maybe a more part time role for someone exceptional who has the fam to consider?</p> -
<p>Isn't the concept of a bowling coach traveling with the team perhaps unnecessary?</p>

<p>Maybe we can attract a better quality candidate and get better results if the role is NZ based? Surely most of the actual foundation "work" goes in during training camps and at the domestic level rather than on tour when net sessions are truncated around injury and workload concerns etc.</p>

<p>Yes you need to devise bowling plans and give the guys feedback, but maybe than can be done from afar in some cases.</p>

<p>In any event I'm starting to think we need to reinvent the role given the quality of candidates we are attracting - and for how long they are staying.</p> -

<p>On another note fuck Oram had good stats in tests. 36 batting average with 5 test tons (against <em>good</em> opposition too) is nothing to be sneezed at, and a 33 bowling average at an RPO of 2.3. If he had played 80+ matches instead of just 33 he could easily have ended up with 40/30 type stats which would put him up there with some of the best all rounders of all time. Gotta feel for the guy with all the bloody injuries he had.</p>
