Super Rugby 2022

WR really needs to step in and protect the game, they shouldn't have let SA go north and they should look NZ and Oz in a room together until they're friends again. The best way rugby works is if there is a strong NH and strong SH competition, but seems like the NH fisheads on WR are happy to see the SH get split up.

However if we make a 2nd Auckland team, then HB drop out too, to join
How can it be justified allocating two teams to the Auckland area when crowd attendances at Counties and North Harbour games are rather small? Using MP as another example of lack of attendance on matchday also does nothing to justify two teams. They probably get way more crowd at Ta$man home games than North Harbour games, although spectators are probably paid appearance and travelling fees to turn up at Trafalgar Park.
-
@Higgins the really bad news is i stuffed up my maths and it's 3 Auckland teams
HB confirmed gone
Trying getting bigger i guess?

I can't wait for the day when the Taumaranui Chapter of (insert name of any motorcycle club here) use dubiously acquired funds to purchase a majority shareholding of the combined King Country/ Thames Valley/East Coast/ Bay of Plenty franchise and relocate it to Mananui (or perhaps the exercise grounds at some Corrections Department incarceration facility) to make it easier for them to attend fixtures.

Yeah? This is from Foxsport site? The super deal was always until 2023 , and just read the article, Argentina got a quarter of the Supersport deal, bullshit, the splitting of supersport deal finshed before they even came into the comp, because SA said they were getting all the coin so everyone did their own tv deals. And NZR $91m deal is not for super rugby, it's for all NZ rugby including School, NPC, Super and tests. Take the whole article with a huge dose of doubtm because RA is going to pay an expanded super comp with $29 mill!

@KiwiMurph said in Super Rugby 2022:
@Dan54 It is written by Christy Doran after all - who is essentially a tabloid rugby journo
Also add, that article also says Aus and SA will look at joining up? So Aus are going to rejoin SA and start travelling to SA again?? Much as I would love the Saffas in the comp. there is almost noone in Aus want it!

Play amongst themselves? That will only make them stronger.....

As much as I want a domestic comp this is just another Murdoch hatchet job.

Listened to Tim Horan being interviewed yesterday and he said it would be the worst move OZ rugby could make. Without getting into the economics of it, his main point was the quality of opposition for the OZ teams. He said they need to play against the NZ teams and he likes the expansion with MP and Drua.
What is happening is not perfect and things have moved on significantly since the hey day of the old Super 12 (the peak for me - Super 14 and 15 nah), but there were some positives/lessons that still stand true today - don’t expand too quickly - don’t drag the season out too long - don’t have experimental laws - vary the venues / take to regions in both OZ and NZ.

i assume this doesn't happen because season tickets and memberships are too valuable.
-
In NZ at least, the quality of some of the grounds and lack of suitable lighting are factors. Sure, we'd like more day games but that isn't going to happen.
-
@ACT-Crusader Horan is a bit of an idiot. Wouldn't be basing future decisions on anything he has to say.

I think most people would agree with Horan's comments. You're about the only person (on here) constantly banging on about how Aus teams shouldn't play NZ teams.

You obviously haven't popped your head into any ozzie rugby sites. It's a pretty widespread opinion over there

Nope, none.
I'll re-edit my post then.
-
@Machpants yeah, i think its easy for kiwis to looks at super rugby as this show piece because we still have the NPC to develop players, obviously less than before but its still there, quite different in Aus, as i said earlier there is effectively nothing between club and super rugby over here so the idea of a more level playing field is attractive to lots

@Kiwiwomble I take my hat off to Oz rugby for trying things like the MARC etc but it’s damn hard to get the necessary traction to make it economically viable in a crowded Oz winter sports market.
-
@Nepia most people want a domestic comp. I don't get this weird thing where everyone keeps telling us what we actually want. SR has never had great buy in here.
Edit: and I still think Aus teams should play Kiwi teams - it just shouldn't be the entire comp. Champions cup style crossover would be my preference.
-
So, if we lose the Australian teams, what is the option?
I'd consider setting up a 12 team competition (10 NZ sides, MP, Drua or another South Pacific team) to replace Super/NPC.
We could then try to get a competition going with the Japanese league one teams with a cross over tournament (Championship, bowl, plate).
We could add Oz teams as well, but if they walk out on us, I'd try to fuck them up and leave them isolated by closing off Japan from them, and leaving them 100% in the cold.

my wild speculation is they might think they can use RWC money to bankroll a new competition until (if?) it becomes sustainable...not sure we would see this kind of thing if they hadn't won the RWC

thats the key point i think, still have some spectacle for a couple of weeks...but with something behind it to actually grow talent and interest
-
Remember RA are also looking at Private Equity options just like NZR/Silver Lake - I wonder if that's where the funding comes from for a domestic Aus comp/potential new Aus teams.
-
@KiwiMurph apparently silverlake and CVC are both interested. Silverlake on the basis SR is committed to and CVC with different ideas.
Anecdotal tho.

I know Super rugby has dropped in popularuty Derpus, but I lived in Aus from 1996 until a couple of years back, and it was incredibly popular up to expansion yeams, and even in Qld where I was there were bloody great crowds up too a few years back

we've instantly identified the problem we will never sold
in trying to have "no losers" we won't have many winners either
Combining unions will not work. Game sharing, branding, it will all get muddled.
Places are going to have to lose.
You're talking about winning and losing and then start blathering about having teams based on population - the ultimate in rewarding participation!!!
Let's reward the most successful unions. Then the only question is whether Ta$man gets two teams...

You want to have two teams who can't win the Ranfurly Shield?

I don't see this being resolved any time soon.

Between this guy and Marinos, ARU are being run by absolute dickheads. Do they really think they can do better as the 3rd best oval ball code in Oz? They couldn't get a domestic comp to work before, I don't see its any different now
-

Absolute fucktard
-
Hilarious that all this whining is achieving is just highlighting how bad RA are at negotiating.
NZ negotiated a TV deal almost three times as much as Australia could muster. How embarrassing for them.
-
And yet he's right. NZRU have been shit to deal with and the idea of a domestic comp is worth consideration - particularly because the fans want it.
I don't really get why he's doing it via the media, though. Does seem childish/antagonistic.
All in all - we are in better shape shape now that when he took over so he can't all be bluster.
-
Can we expect an article tomorrow or the next day where an administrator from MP and/or Drua is forced into a corner to “pick a side”, because either it’s a shrewd move by RA to mention them or an incredible overreach.
-
@ACT-Crusader Drua are fucked if there's a split. Australian government have been providing them with funding but I'm pretty sure NZRU hold their 'licence' - although not sure what that would be worth anyway.
-
@Derpus agree. I guess in my opinion at least it’s disappointing that they’ve been mentioned publicly at this stage.
