After Brodie Retallick, now also Sam Whitelock:
Sam Whitelock has joined fellow All Black Brodie Retallick on the sidelines with a busted digit.
The Crusaders’ lock is set to miss the next four weeks of Super Rugby Pacific with a broken finger, one of three injury blows coach Scott Robertson confirmed on Wednesday.
Fellow lock Mitchell Dunshea is gone for the season with a knee injury, while hooker Brodie McAlister will miss between four and six weeks with a calf injury.
Dunshea, who missed Canterbury’s NPC campaign with a neck injury last year, had surgery on his damaged medial collateral ligament on Tuesday.Whitelock had surgery last week and missed the victory over the Chiefs, but is expected to be fit in time for the team’s four-week Australian tour, if not before.
“It’s been a hell of a casualty ward the last few weeks,” Robertson said, who has also had to deal with more than 65 per cent of the team contracting Covid-19.Ta$man lock Antonio Shalfoon has also been training with the squad, and Robertson is on the prowl for another replacement. Loose forward Dominic Gardiner can also cover the second row.

As expected, Shilo Klein has received a 3-week suspension.
The SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee has accepted a guilty plea from Shilo Klein of the Crusaders for contravening Law 9.13 - A player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously, after he was Red Carded during a Super Rugby Pacific Match on the weekend.
Klein has been suspended from from all forms of the game up to and including 24 April 2022.
The incident occurred in the 77th minute of the match between the Crusaders and Highlanders played at Orangetheory Stadium in Christchurch on 1 April 2022.
The SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee of Michael Heron QC (Chairman), Stefan Terblanche and John Langford assessed the case.
In his finding, Foul Play Review Committee Chairman Michael Heron QC ruled the following:
"Having conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, including all camera angles and additional evidence, including from the player and submissions from his legal representative, Aaron Lloyd, the Foul Play Review Committee upheld the Red Card under Law 9.13."
"With respect to sanction the Foul Play Review Committee deemed the act of foul play merited a mid-range entry point of 6 weeks due to the World Rugby instructions that dictate any incident of foul play involving contact with the head must start at a mid-range level. Taking into account mitigating factors including the Player's clean judicial record, his acceptance of foul play and his expressed remorse, the Judicial Committee reduced the suspension to 3 weeks."
"The Player was informed of his ability to apply for the Head Contact Process Coaching Intervention. Any player who has a citing or red card upheld by a disciplinary panel for foul play involving the Head Contact Process may apply to have the final week of their sanction substituted by undertaking a coaching intervention that specifically addresses the technical tackle/contact technique-error that caused or contributed to the foul play. This intervention will be overseen by the World Rugby Coaching Intervention Expert Review Panel – a panel of expert independent coaches - and is only be available to first time offenders."
"The player is therefore suspended for 3 weeks, up to and including 29 April 2022.”
