Ok, I'm going to say it.
Ross Taylor is past it. Great career but the body can't cope ( eyes, reflexes etc). Think Keiran Read in 2019
There, I've said it (nervous gulp)
I think a future batting order of:
- Latham
- Young
- Williamson
- Conway
- Nicholls
- Blundell
... isn't many seasons away. Unfortunately for Ross.
Swap 3 and 4 around I think.
This was always going to be Roscoe's last hurrah. Let's hope your Reado analogy isn't accurate. If he doesn't produce form in these two tests will they have the balls to drop him or will the lack of play for Blundell count? Will be interesting. Maybe Blundell gets a go next test?
They won't drop Rossco and nor should they. He got 70 vs Pakistan late last year, so he's not in the Geoff Howarth and his seeing eye dog category just yet.
From Stead's comments about liking to play a spinner, I suspect we will see Boult come in for CdG for the WTC game - or hopefully before if he's available for the 2nd test vs England.
Santner odds on to make the XI unless England slaughter him.
Agree re: Rosco, he's also been killing it in the ODIs the past few years so don't think he's quite a spent force, though he's not far off. I'd also be loathe to leave out our most experienced player on the big stage, the young guys will look to him during the match for support and guidance.

I saw none of the match so far, but will tune in for the first session tonight.
Absolutely fucking awesome to see Conway do well, he fills a big gap in the opening position, our lineup looks bloody strong with him there and in form. Also love that Nicholls looks to have just ground their bowlers into the dust with a dogged innings, exactly what is needed on day 1 of a test. I'll take that innings 10 times out of 10, even if fair-weather fans like @MN5 don't find it "entertaining" enough.

The Daily Mail have found some racist and sexist tweets by Ollie Robinson (from 9 years ago when he was 18) that the ECB won't be happy about:
Fucking hell, we're setting ourselves a pretty low bar for outrage these days aren't we.
ECB say they are going to "launch an investigation". Christ, what the hell are they going to investigate? Idiot teenager tells offensive jokes to be funny. In other news water is wet and the sky is blue. Just let the kid apologise along the lines of "yeah I was just being a bit of a dick, sorry about that" and move the fuck on. God the media is just the worst.

would also be one hell of a rubbish contract if digging out stuff you did years ago means that you can be fined now.

I’m not saying he didn’t do his job I just hope he picks up the pace today. Loads of big hitters still to come.
If that’s my only criticism then it’s fair to say the team is going ok.
-
@mn5 you contradict your own argument. If there are plenty of bug hitters to come Nicholls has no need to up his scoring rate. He just just keep on doing what he has been - we should be looking to bat once and bat big so slow scoring isn't really an issue at this stage. What we don't want to do is lose three quick wickets early on Day 2 and undo all the good work from Day 1

When you put it that way it does make sense I just hope he gets out of Trevor Franklin mode a bit ( whilst preserving his wicket of course )

Bat once. Bat long.

@crucial It is not rare in the UK for employers to take an interest in their employees personal social media accounts.
My guess is that there is a line in an ECB contract that is along the line of "a player must ensure that their personal social media accounts reflect the values and aims of the ECB and support our views that Cricket is a game for all, as well as our obligation to our sponsors."
I suspect the announcement of the investigation is a holding statement as the ECB wait to see if there is more bad publicity for them from Ollie Robinson's social media accounts.
All a shame when the guy is obviously a fantastic bowler. There was pain and regret in his voice during his sincere apology yesterday. I hope the ECB can find a way to stand by their player.

I understand that for while in their employ but unless it is made clear that they expect you to sanitise or delete anything old it's a bit rough. Geez in most countries you don't even have to declare criminal records for most things past a certain point.

I'm not going to pile into MN5 re his or her opinion on Nicholls' innings, suffice to say that it was just what the doctor ordered.
On Day 2 he needn't do anything different either. He can just bat on and let the likes of Conway, CdG and Jamieson throw the bat at the other end. If he faces half the balls on Day 2 and scores at the same pace, he'd be on 140 or so and the others combined might score at 5 an over which puts us on 560. If he picks up the pace even marginally and the others score slightly quicker also, we've scored 600 at Lords.

Plus I had the feeling that of the two batsmen in the partnership he was the one getting under the skins of the Poms. The bowlers were all 'he's not even trying to score so that removes our options'

Why does Conway's bat sound like it's made of aluminium?
The pitch mic sounds off the bat were odd
Don't think it was one mic at one end though. All of Conway's shots sounded tinny or like there was a slight crack in the bat. The other bats sounded normal.
When I was watching, before I fell asleep, they all sounded awful. Latham's sounded the worst.

@crucial I've seen UK job application forms that ask for the details of any social media accounts that you've used in the last ten years and remain open to public view.
Looks like Robinson did sanitise his account but forgot about deleting replies to his then mates from 2012/3.

Yeah, that's fine (as long as they don't want your TSF handle).
But that's for their due diligence. If they still employ you and something ancient is then brought to light is that your fault?
However, if they do employ you and the contract states that pre-employment SM is grounds for discipline then fair enough. It's up to you to do some purging.
Then what about things found on wayback engine?
I probably have some appalling stuff in the pre moderated TSF days. -

Imagine having to read through that many years of tweets to dig for dirt.
I was going to suggest that someone had this lined up for him from years ago just waiting for the chance. But @sparky 's reply makes as much sense. (BTW #nobooboo )

Conway is absurd. Everything looks so easy for him
Amazingly ( well, to me at least ) he’s the twelfth BC to get a ton on debut. That seems like an awful lot of players !
1930 - J E Mills - 117 vs England
1965 - Bruce Taylor - 105 vs India (took a 5 wi as well, only time in Test history this has happened)
1973 - Rodney Redmond - 107 vs Pakistan
1988 - Mark 'Paddy' Greatbatch - 107* vs England
1999 - Matthew Sinclair - 214 vs West Indies
2001 - Lou Vincent - 104 vs Australia
2002 - Scott Styris - 107 vs West Indies
2010 - Kane Williamson - 131 vs India
2013 - Hamish Rutherford - 171 vs England
2014 - James Neesham - 137* vs India
2017 - Tom Blundell - 107* vs West Indies
2021 - Devon Conway - 136 vs England*Only one all timer on that list, possibly two.
Just to take the list on a slightly different tangent on the stats, just looking at those who have got a 100 at lords on debut it is also a short list.
1893 - 107 — Harry Graham (AUS)
1969 - 107 — John Hampshire (ENG)
1996 - 131 — Sourav Ganguly (IND)
2004 - 112 — Andrew Strauss (ENG)
2007 - 126* — Matt Prior (ENG)
2021 - 132* — Devon Conway (NZ) -
@bayimports Strauss was against us.
Seen them all play bar Graham
