Cricket 2021: NZ in England and WTC Final

What's everyone leaning towards for the final, at this stage? I'd go with:
Latham
Conway
Williamson
Taylor
Nicholls
Watling
Jamieson
Southee
Wagner
Boult
PatelYes it's a fairly short batting order with a lot of responsibility placed on Jamieson given Watling has been ordinary of late but to be fair with that top five he shouldn't need to score more than a handy 30 or 40 and if things go really well, only once. And if there is a crisis then isn't that when we expect Watling to shine anyway? The lower order then really only needs to hold up the other end.
I think Patel has played his way in, may have been in anyway as the wicket is one of the more spin-friendly decks in England, but taking wickets has probably removed any doubt.
As soon as you decide to pick Patel - knowing we're always going to play Boult, Southee, Wagner and Jamieson in most conditions - we have batting order length issues. Moving forward this is likely to mean we simply need Jamieson to prove he can be an all round option as opposed to a bowler who can bat, or this issue will remain.

I do like that team but I really can’t see one of Santner, CDGH or Mitchell not being there.....and cricket being the funny game it is it puts a bit of pressure on Jamieson to see if he’s a genuine batting option at this level which seems harsh given how his bowling has gone so far !
What’s the minimum we expect from a 7 batsman ? I’d say late 20s as a career average if he’s worth his salt as a bowler too.
I’d like to see a spot for Young but there isn’t room, simple as that. He’s gonna have to wait for Taylor to retire to get a regular gig.

What did we do to Holding?
Think NZ have bowled Average, England just poor. Said it about 10 times. After going on and on yday about dropped catches, seems he cannot give us credit.
Why the fucks he commentating anyway?
Yeah I don't understand why they canned Gower and Botham but kept Holding.
Found some old scribblings on notepads?

Aussies love me, because I sound so cool

@mn5 I think high 20s is fair, although we still have to remember that the primary job is to take wickets - if we're cleaning up the other team for not much, the runs don't matter as often.
One nagging question I have is whether Patel can spin out the Indians - they are a bit better against spin than the English.

Yeah I guess that’s the whole balancing act of any team. If Patel plays then it would be extremely rough to drop any of the four pace bowlers so it becomes horses for courses but possibly harsh to burden Jamieson with batting expectations too. Would another option ( down the line, not now ) be for them to shoehorn Young in there, have Blundell at seven and then the bowlers? A team of that equivalent makeup never did the Windies any harm in their glory days.
Patel has done well but let’s be honest, the bar had been set very fucken low.

I watched nearly all of that day, which for an old man in a non favourable time zone, took a bit of doing🙂.
The Taylor Nicholls partnership started from scratch with a new ball introduced and possibly England's best ever new ball bowlers. It was basically our Ross vs those two. The partnership got to 52 off 72 balls. That's fucken good. We were whittling away the deficit at 4 and a bit per over. Taylor took it upon himself to go after England in this first hour. He played big shots against the new ball and ran deft singles throughout. He could have bobbed and weaved and "seen" out the new dukes, but no, he took it too them with body shots, to mangle a boxing metaphor.
It was great! Broad nearly foiled him with an expert bouncer but England's fielding is as shit and pea hearted as everything else they do. Rossco just about got us level, but his innings and strategy was the senior batter directly taking on the opposition. I asked for a leadership innings and rossco delivered, even when out of form. Fucken great. I'll force myself to remember that knock when I get irrationally bitchy at Taylor in the future. Sometimes the stats say less than the body language of a session. This was one of those times. Rossco searched for and exposed all sorts of cracks. He didn't strut but he didn't bow either. He stared them in the face and stood tall, stoic and non plussed throughout.
Contrast that approach with the opposition senior batsman's innings.
Occasionally as a Black Caps fan you're in the right place at the right time to witness a bit of history. A bit of unexpected success. Hobart was one of them when Dougie bowled us to victory. Coney and chats vs Pakistan, hadlees gabba test. It's a time when you message your mate in nz at 3am, knowing he's asleep but hoping you'll wake him with "are you watching this mate?"
Yesterday was that occasion to savour. The long drawn out 90 minutes of bliss watching us roast these fluffybunnies and thinking, " we've got them 7 down for negative 9" is delicious 🙂. The face of Joe Root like a startled rabbit for a 50 ball 5 while the batsmen he'd written off at lords fulfilled his expectations of them. The smile on Ajaz's face after he set him up too close to cut and a tad of extra bounce.
So many things to savour during that pom innings. A great day to be a nz cricket fan watching your "B" team set up an overseas series win!
Nobody wins test series'away these days, (except India in Aus😉) and now we're on the verge of beating an england team that is so scared of failure they've forgotten how to play, let alone win.A lovely day to ruin sleep patterns and watch the Ilford 2nd XI silence a fancy dress party 😁

Undoubtedly my best ever sick day watching that game. I’d still happily buy him a beer for that performance alone ( even if I bristle when he is referred to as an all rounder )

I really need to stop listening to talkback.
Some moron just rung and suggested they drop Boult or Southee for Henry.
We're all in agreement about our first "ten" right?
Are we also in agreement that whoever takes the remaining spot will be ok. Are we going to quibble over 9% of the team ruining the other 91%?
Personally I favour Darryl's outs wingers against the Indians but have no argument if experience (satnav), spinning, ( Patel) or containment with a chance of a session turning innings, (CDH) is deemed ,( by Kane, don't forget) to be the solution to a very minor problem.

Whichever way it goes we’ll still field our strongest ever test line up. It just depends if there’s a slight balance more towards batting or bowling…..

Exactly! And either way with that balance we've got enough bats and bowlers anyway. If the "ten" can't secure a win, it won't be the "eleventh's" fault

….and it’s easy to gripe over the fact that whatever All Rounder that inevitably gets picked won’t be as good as Stokes/Holder/Ashwin/Ul Hasan or whoever……but the rest of our team is the shit !

I'm still trying to fully understand why the game was moved from Lords, other than to give the Indians a fighting chance. Quarantine is not exactly difficult to manage regardless of where they play.

If its because the wicket is more spin friendly Ajaz has to play. The perceived drop in run output by leaving CDG or Santner is far outweighed by having a legitimate attacking spinner

@mn5 👍...he might play like one of those guys though eh? I mean imagine if our 11th grabs his precious opportunity and puts in a personal best? Ain't that is what team sport and unity (shudder) is all about?😉
Indeed, but then again our two brilliant newbies ( Conway and Jamieson ) might simultaneously crumble under pressure and shit the bed.
Based on all of that we should ban all comments from now on cos we might jinx everyone.
-
@no-quarter to be fair the Indian covid produced all sorts of hysteria at that time of that decision. Something about a hotel on the ground.
But yes, political hysteria interfering with sport and ignoring that everyone had months to safeguard the participants with VIP virus precautions.

Sorry mate, lost me there with superstition 😁. My point being how about the 11th's glass is half full rather than half empty? 😉
