Not at all. But the word has strong slavery connotations for black americans. They would probably rather hear a guy in a movie use the "N" word before referring to a black guy as a monkey. And I am sure the americans don't even realise Adams is polynesian
-
NBA draft is on right now. The lakers (who now get to keep their pick after finishing the lottery in the top 3) Celtics and 76ers are the top 3. I hope it's anyone but Philly as they've basically tanked for the last 3 or 4 years and like the cavs before them simply don't deserve a number one pick

How regarded is Adams?

As you'd expect, the NZ media are constantly going on and on and on about Adams. I read a review of the first match Oklahoma vs Golden State on the Guardian website, and Adams wasn't mentioned once.

OK, he's clearly a good basket-baller, but outside of NZ, is he actually generating much press??
-

I watched the game on replay when I got home from work last night and damn, that was a game of two halves.

And then in that last quater when Durant went like 0 - 6 shots and just kept pushing the shots on every possesion for OKC really pissed me off.

I know he's a great player but I've seen it a number of times where he get's into a mini-slump during the game and rather than dish off possession to a team mate to score, he just keeps on hogging the ball and pushing every shot until one finally hits net.

As for Adam's, probably not his best game of the playoffs thus far but he was very solid.

One area he really influences the game is how his presence in the paint and defence will put off some of the leagues best shooters. He makes players second guess and change their shots last minute.

But damn I wish he would get a haircut and a shave... that farking lip slug just makes me cringe
-

If you watch ESPN I think he is getting a lot of exposure about the quality of his play, not just "look at the Kiwi with the crazy mo that looks like the guy off GoT". He has really stepped it up in the postseason, which is where reputations are forged
-

Really? The N word only has one connotation. Monkey is still a normal part of language and can be used many ways. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary (isn't that American?),it could describe a primate, it could describe a mischievous person or apparently can even describe a subordinate person (as in organ grinders monkey) or an amount of money. As a verb you can monkey about (play the fool) or monkey with something (fiddle with it) or mock someone.

The M-W's first example of sentence use is "He's quite a cheeky little monkey, isn't he? "

The urban slang dictionary lists it as being used as a racial slur, but then it is also a term for fluffybunny.

Point is that the context Adams used it in was obvious and defined as legit. It's not like he was using the word in an abstract way when the obvious use in that situation was the racial one. It's the other way around.

As for slavery origins, I think you will find that as a slur it is more to do with blacks falling into a 'sub-human' or less advanced category under some people's misunderstanding of Darwin's evolutionary theories.
-

I think they do know that he's not a Caucasian American....

I'm aware of the connotation but it's 2016 and I think if people take offence to that its more a reflection on them than anything Adams actually said. -

Yes, there is no doubt that it can (and is) used as a slur. It just isn't the primarily and obvious use of the word.

The context was clear Adams shouldn't even have had to apologise, but good on him for doing so in the proper way.
-
- Great win.
- Awesome game from Adams, when his team needed FTs he made them.
- What a total non event this "monkey" shit is.

I was told yesterday that black people should never be described as monkeys even if its to do with how agile they are.

If you think black people look like monkeys then fuck you. But if you think the best way to describe someones physical abilities is to compare them to an animal renowned for those abilities, whats the big deal.

If you find that offensive as a non black person then surely its says more about you than the person offering the simile. It suggest you think its offensive because you feel black people will be offended or you think the physical likeness is correct.

Adams said something that offended many but only because of PC bullshit and a knee jerk first society.

I was watching a couple of the ESPN talk shows and his apology did much to defuse any furore. But make no mistake, all of them seemed to take it all pretty seriously :unknown: Funny from a society that sees mass shootings, hate crimes vs gays and blacks as things that still happen
-

PC fuckheads will always trawl the net to find something to be offended by on behalf of said person that the "offending" was directed at.

I'm sure lots of White Americans are appalled that someone who looks like one of the Khals from Game of Thrones ( Polynesia you say ? I thought that place was imaginary like Narnia ) called them Monkeys.
-

Saw the interview live and it was pretty obvious he was reaching for a word to finish the sentence - almost got the feeling he was going to swear something like "buggers" but "monkeys" was the first word that came to mind. I cringed a tiny bit at the time, but it seems like it will sensibly wash over.

I thought he was going to say "fuckers" and came up with something less offensive. -

Do an Eli Manning and refuse to play for them. Simmons and the other potential number one pick will both be hoping to fall to number two because the LA Lakers are the LA Lakers even if they suck right now.
-
Wasn't there a big kerfuffle made around an AFL player being called a monkey or something similar last year?
