It was 1996. A young M4L was in the stands watching BOP play for the Shield, expecting a fun day in Auckland, and some beers afterwards. Suddenly, holy shit! There is 8 minutes to go, and we are up by 18!!! Fucking come on!! Of course Auckland came right back, but not back enough, 80 minutes, we're still up by 6! And it's our scrum feed!! Win the scrum, kick it out, take home the shield!! I'm cheering and laughing and it's an unbelievable day. Wait, what? holy shit, no! they couldn't, could they? Carrington? You fucking traitor!! Miss the kick you fluffybunny. Tero. Noooooo!!!! Fuck you rugby gods, why?!!!

I still maintain he touched the deadball line before the ball touches down, where were you Ayoub?

I absolutely HATE it when commentators start wanking on about an unassailable lead. Always reminds me of that test against the Boks and Murray Mexted laughing heartily that the clock was ticking down and the Boks only had to score three times in quick succession to win.

Which they then proceeded to do.

In recent times I've loved the league tests between the Kiwis and Kangaroos and the obligatory Gus Gould and Rabbs say it's over and we've pulled it out of the bag.

worst one i (vaguely) remember was an NPC semi Waikato v Counties.. we were spanking them. Buck Anderson was the ground MC and was on the mic telling people what time the final was on at the ground next week.

Then Joeli Vidiri cut loose and scored about a zillion points in a very short period of time.

Oh gawd, I remember that. 1997, cos me and a bunch of people were huddled around a radio in a tiny uni hall of residence room. Everything was great until it wasn't, and we were all staring at each other going what the fuck just happened.

I worked at the Outback that night, at the time it was the biggest night ever after it, jesus people pumped through some piss. At the end of the night the back chiller contained the kegs on the tap, and one carton of Purple Goanna, everything else had been pumped through.

I was at the game - whats up with you slackassess not going? It was probably one of those $10 deals from the hilly with a bus and a handle included!

As a rugby fan I thought that was great - it was the best individual performance to win a game I've ever seen. Vidiri was Rupeni/Jonah/Cully all rolled into one [edit] for that game [edit].

Urban myth goes that Joeli actually heard that ground announcement and fired up. After the first try everyone else just fed him the ball and said 'go again'.

3am kick off for me, the worst possible time, I've generally been getting a few hours sleep and getting up for the game but I suspect that I'll be way too excited to sleep this week.

As a fellow Sydney-sider, I'm feeling your pain Nepia. 3 am just sucks.

For every game I've watched live this RWC, which includes every All Black match and in particular, the quarter and semi-finals, I've been in the front living room watching in the dark alone riding every tackle and every hit-up made by the Blacks.

I'm not keen to change anything so I'll set the alarm for 2:30 am to watch a little of the build-up but the problem for us Aussie based Ferner's, Foxtel will be using their own commentators during the game and the lead-up and I can only imagine just how unpalatable Kearns, Marto and Co will be at that time.

Certainly there will have to be a nerve calmer or two but I'm really struggling to think of what the most appropriate drink for a 2:30 get up and 3 am kick-off would be...???

Beer, don't know if the stomach could handle it if I've just woken up... Wine, maybe but then red or white?

A decent single malt may be the way, but that is more of a end of evening drink and therefore would limit where to go after that.

Perhaps a Deutz sparkling with a strawberry might be the way, good reasonably priced Kiwi sparkling and the strawberry to give a more "breakfast" feel.

As for company, I will be sitting alone on the edge of the couch in my All Black supporter's top... Which, as an aside, I'm wearing now here at work and throughout the day in North Sydney where I have been on the receiving end of many a death stare which I return with a knowing nod of the head and a sly smile that just gives away that little hint of confidence. :mocking:

And all the company... I need is my fellow Ferners who I'm certain will no doubt be doing as I have for the past two matches and that will be furiously posting quick emotion-lad messages on the game thread in breaks so as to not miss a single sphincter wrecking moment of the game.

Cheers to all the All Blacks and Wallaby fans who will be sitting on a knife's edge until the final whistle blows... may the better team win.

And go the Mighty All Blacks!!!

You can watch on GEM in Sydney - I hear they have Gordon Bray and that Scottish bloke (Chris Paterson?)

I'm going to embrace Kearnsey during this one - if we do well. If we are losing I may have to switch to GEM and endure the commercials. Funny, I remember only too well whinging about Gordon Bray as a commentator - strange to think he is now the preferred option!

Kearnsey is actually a really good bloke. He just happens to be biased-as-fuck which is really irritating to listen to during a match.
