@mariner4life as a rookie 18yo, Mohave King has shown something. He has the same problem as a lot of kids do these days though, it’s either a 3 or a dunk. No mid-range game which is a shame.
I could convince my mate Aaron Grabau to come out of retirement 😎
At least Grabau would play defense
King drifts out of games far too often, and his shooting is actually pretty poor most nights. Just a kid though, so willing to cut some slack
-
In other news, the Breakers are finally back in Auckland. Only playing for pride and their home fans now.
-
-
The Breakers enjoy some home cooking and survive a 4th Q meltdown to beat the Kings. Delany was on fire.
-
went to the Bunnings shed last night for what i dearly hope is the last time ever (the only benefit was the catering company is waaaay better than at the Convention Centre). Brisbane were in town. I don't feel anything for the Bullets except for the fact that Nathan Sobey is in the conversation for the biggest flog in the competition. Didn't expect a win either
And of course the Taipans obliged by losing despite having untold chances to actually win the game.
Machado was good last night. King has a breakout type game, but as pointed out by an intelligent observer above, 3s and dunks, needs a reliable mid-range jumpshot. Nate continued his late season career revival.
Venky Jois is in the conversation for the worst Taipan ever. And that is a fucking crowded field. What a complete fucking spud that guy is. Check out his wide-open, take your time, 3-point attempt to draw the game. It is mariner4life-esque, and i fucking suck at basketball.
Kenny and Djeric are out of the rotation, which is good because they are spuds. The problem is, and it's one we face every couple of years, is that there are no building blocks moving forward. We have Scotty for another year unless he finds a way out. But nearly every other player is absolutely tradeable. Well, not sure anyone would take them. Seriously, the bench rotation last night wouldn't win the QBL.
Guys who showed promise and development 12 months ago, have not only not come on this year, have very visibly regressed. We are basically having to burn the joint down and start again
Also, the sideline reporter lady was a spunk.
-
So no fans at the United v Taipans game tonight. It’s being played at Qudos Bank arena in Sydney. I guess they couldn’t organise all the other facilities / ticketing / services in time to allow fans.
-
Mike Kelly, coach of the year to fired in rapid time
-
well, what a great comp aye? What feels like months of play and we get Melbourne v Perth in the GF series. Odds on that were probably $1.20 at the tip-off of the first game.
booooring.
Also i hate both of these teams with a passion, so i literally do not even have one solitary single fuck to give about this series.
Andrej Lemanis on his way out of the league with some real talk, saying how the NBL should tell people how much clubs are actually spending on players. Says it will set realistic caps on fan expectations, and answer questions like "why didn't you sign Jock Landale?"
*“There’s two clubs that added NBA Australians at the back-end of the season. They’ve already been allocated their budget, spent it and they’ve been able to find more money to add those guys to the roster,’’ he said.
“That’s the environment the NBL is operating in now … I think it would be fantastic if all that was made transparent. Not individual player salaries but just total spend so that the public is actually informed, and fans have a realistic expectation on where their teams are going to finish at the end of the season and can get behind something else if it’s not built financially to compete with the big boys.
“If the fans in Cairns think that they have the same chance of winning as the fans at Melbourne United, they are being misled.
“Fans want to know why you can’t recruit Jock Landale. Finances, basically.’*

I watched the game last night and fuck do The Phoenix know how to bottle it.
-
I notice Tai Wynyard is playing for Taranaki in the Sals NZNBL. Never made a go of Kentucky

to back up my earlier point, the Marlins, containing three starting Taipans, lost an NBL1 game on the weekend...
oh and look, the two richest, highest spending teams are playing the final, and the one that isn't missing its best player is winning
yawn.
-
Not that I watched any of the post-season games, but at least Perth didn't win. I hope Gleeson was extra grumpy.

I think he knew his fate when Bryce went down.
Two of my three hatiest teams, but the lesser of the evils won so that’s something. Happy for Shea and Wayne McDaniel’s son

Same.
Been a while since I've seen his name. He was a college star.
Peyton Siva is Samoan, so he'll probably have some family here.
-
The Breakers Israeli coaches have signed a 2-yr extension. Assuming everything is back to normal next season they will need to make the playoffs at least.

Good call. Still remember those Louisville games. Very heady player. Was a High School star too. He’d be about 30 now, so the extra experience will be good for us.
-
@act-crusader He'll be good for the locker room. He's known for his leadership and high character.
He has a crazy backstory. I remember the story of him having to talk his dad out of killing himself when he was 13.
-
No mention (yet) of Besson and Siva in this article.
Breakers depth ’21-22
PG: Tai Webster, William McDowell-White
SG: Corey Webster, Rasmus Bach, Ousmane Dieng (Next Star)
SF: Tom Abercrombie
PF: Finn Delany, Kyrin Galloway
Yanni Wetzell, Rob LoeDP: Sam Timmins, Isaac Davidson
To come: up to 3 imports -
Corey Webster is leaving the Breakers - again.
The New Zealand Breakers are parting ways with star shooting guard Corey Webster.
The departure is by mutual consent despite two years still to run on his contract.
The 32-year-old is the fifth most capped player in Breakers’ history behind Tom Abercrombie, Mika Vukona, Paul Henare, and Alex Pledger.
He finishes his career at the Breakers, having played 236 games over 11 seasons, and was part of the team that won NBL championships in 2011, 2013, and 2015.Siva wouldn't be a direct replacement though.

I agree, but I reckon Corey’s minutes and role would be somewhat diminished with him coming in.
He must have something else on the horizon given he’s only 32 and in good shape.

Must be Europe as the article says he isn't staying in the NBL

@act-crusader I wonder if we will see Tai playing a bit more at SG? I'm not sure Bach has enough quality to be the regular starter and Besson is young.
Siva is currently in MIQ in Rotorua.
-
@bovidae I reckon we will see a bit of a 3 guard lineup with Tai, Siva, McDowell-white all in together. Plus Finn and a big.

I'm not sure small lineups work well in the NBL, where big are still very influential

Worked well for Melbourne United.
Having the one big on the floor creates space. Plus Finn plays bigger than his actual size.

The consequences of not being vaccinated. It sounds like Corey was shown the door for the same reason.
The Sky Sport Breakers have agreed to release star guard Tai Webster.
Webster, the breakout star from last season, inked a new two-year contract with the Breakers in July but since then it has become increasingly likely the team will again start the season in Australia due to the Delta outbreak. The new NBL season is scheduled to start on November 18.
Breakers owner Matt Walsh says he respects Tai Webster’s decision to remain unvaccinated. “Tai was amazing for us last year and we wish him the absolute best. I fully support each player’s freedom of choice in regards to the vaccine”. “The club will keep the door open for Tai, but unfortunately we are living in extraordinary times and without being vaccinated he will not have freedom of travel which would allow him to play for us this season.” -
The Breakers have found Tai Webster's replacement, 18-game NBA lefty point guard Jeremiah Martin.
Breakers depth chart (1 to be added):
PG: Peyton Siva, Will McDowell-White
SG: Jeremiah Martin, Hugo Besson, Rasmus Bach
SF: Tom Abercroimbie, Ousmane Dieng (NS), Isaac Davidson (DP)
PF: Finn Delany, Kyrin Galloway
Yanni Wetzell, Rob Loe, Sam Timmins (DP) -
Good to read that Tai is a man of principle - not. All about the money.
Tall Blacks and former Breakers guard Tai Webster, who parted ways with the New Zealand ANBL club for refusing the Covid-19 vaccine, has ended up getting the jab after all in order to join his new team in Europe.
Webster has signed with Lithuanian EuroLeague club Žalgiris Kaunas until the end of the season after being released by the Breakers following his decision not to get vaccinated for "personal reasons".

Everyone has their price
-
We’ve looked pretty good in the NBL blitz. Besson, Yanni, Finn and Dieng playing well.
Not Breakers related, but Dan Fotu has had two very good back to back games for St Mary’s
-
The Breakers have major problems with a covid outbreak in their tour party. At least 2 starters, the coach and CEO are amongst the 9 positive cases. They will be asking for a postponement of their opening game.

I don't know any of these names!
-
So we got our second win today off the back of some good play from Martin, Siva and Delaney. Finn had his best game of the season, playing more like last season Finn, aggressive and instinctive.
Our young 18yo kid from France Ousmane Dieng can’t hit the side of a barn let alone get a bucket. Shamir needs to not start him. The other French kid Besson is a player and has an NBA type game.
-
@act-crusader Dieng can't defend anyone either
-
now, while i would much prefer not to talk about this stupid fucking "competition"
My son had the game on last night, did the Breakers get to play at home? Shit that must have taken some quick decision making this week
