Just proving yet again England aren’t particularly good. Aside from Root and maybe Anderson who from their team would walk into the Black Caps ?
Stokes probably would as well.
No I don’t reckon. He is an all rounder but he’s not World Class in either discipline. In years gone by yes he would have walked in but not with the team we have currently. Our four seamers are all better than he is ( he’s currently the 30th best bowler in the world ) and the only way he’d get in as a batsman ( where he is ranked 11th which surprises me ) is if he magically reinvented himself as an opening partner for Tom Latham.
Stokes would be in a straight shoot out with CDGH if we choose not to play a "spinner" and I'd lean Stokes
He would qualify too.
I'd say that Stokes would have been selected for NZ then would still be hanging around because it's difficult to get dropped if the selectors have chosen you for a while. Not if you’re an all rounder. Corey Anderson, Jimmy Neesham, CDGH and Santner ( although he gets more of a chance since apparently he’s a spinner ) have all been and gone in the recent past. Daryl Mitchell is coming off a ton in his last dig but he’s still far from an automatic selection.
CDGH and Stokes average pretty much the same in their respective disciplines funnily enough ( Stokes with the much longer career obviously ) and the Black Caps are hardly struggling without their resident Zimbot.

Southampton was mentioned previously as the alternative venue for the final.
Why? Chalky pitch?
I think it was because Hampshire is relatively covid-free compared to London and up north.

If we believe that the BCCI runs world cricket.
BCCI president Sourav Ganguly revealed on Monday that the World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand will be held in Southampton in June. The match is scheduled from June 18 to 22.
According to Ganguly, Southampton emerged as a clear favourite because it is one of the two venues - Manchester being the other - with an on-site hotel, an advantage for teams operating in a bio-secure environment during the Covid-19 pandemic. Having on-site hotels meant both venues hosted international series involving West Indies, Pakistan, Ireland and Australia in the summer of 2020. -

@bovidae how does the pitch at Southampton traditionally play?
As @Crucial says previously, Moeen Ali has two 5-wkt bags at the Rose Bowl. But so does Anderson, while Holder and Gabriel got 5+ wickets in an inning each when the WI won last year.
I'd say there is something for everyone in the pitch.

Indias spinning all rounders ( potentially THREE at last count ) are absolutely terrifying compared to anything we can muster. Santner doesn’t quite measure up to Ashwin, Jadeja or Axar Patel.

@dan54 g'day mate, hope you are well?
I would have thought that a June test at Lords would suit us down to the ground tbh. we should be very confident going into that with the conditions it will provide. In London, typically May has good weather for 1-2 weeks and everything thinks 'bring it on' and it then is quite shitty weather with quite a bit of rain.
I also think having it at Lords will inspire NZ after our last final there. case of unfinished business at that same ground. Lords wont be full I wouldn't have thought. If so, I would expect a huge Indian contingent to attend.
If it is a reduced or no crowd, then that would be another advantage to us, as it would be just like playing a test match in NZ
Covid is on the retreat in London, so I expect by June that the match will be at Lords. They will do all they can to stage it at Lords Imo.
Southampton would be a bit drier wicket. I played Southern league cricket (next step up is county level) in the 90's in Hampshire and the wickets were incredibly good for batting. it would be a disadvantage for us if it was shifted down there.
B Dickey and I will be trying to get tickets for Lords (fingers crossed)
hope you are well mate and enjoying NZ life again -

and re: mn5 and Stokes. Just eye roll emoji.
Great response. Care to elaborate ?
because you over do it with this guy
Fact is, for all your chat, he's scored 10 test hundreds, enough to put him 8th on the all-time NZ list. One was a not out to single-handedly win an Ashes test. I seem to remember a pretty decent knock in a high profile ODI some 2 years back.
The guy is a fucking handy player who has stepped up in big moments. But you like to make out like he is some scrub who has stumbled in to a test career.

that said, who would he knock out of the NZ Test team? I mean, if we're picking Darryl Mitchell, then I'm 100% there with Stokes. But we're not - he's competing with proper batters, and proper bowlers ... we don't have the weak links like we used to.
If Wags isn't there, he's in like Flynn. Or maaaybe after Rosco retires he'll fight with Devon. Otherwise, he's not a nailed down selection for me (which is awesome - he's some player!)

Nope, have never said that and I’m talking test cricket not ODIs so forget that otherwise I’ll be putting Martin Guptill as one of my openers. He’s a better all rounder overall than any we can muster but despite that I wouldn’t automatically pick him in a combined team.
He’s had a great couple of seasons with the bat but we have three guys from our current team alone with more test hundreds ( plus Watling and Nicholls with 7 and 8 respectively ) so yeah, Stokes is worth a mention but does a guy ranked 11th best batsman in the world and 30th best bowler demand a spot by right ? Hell no.

i don't disagree with that assertion. However the reality is, this is our best test team ever, by the length of the Flemington straight. It's no knock on anyone to not make it, you have to be bloody good. And the reality is, as an all-rounder, you have one spot in a side to make it (unless you are special), bat 6 and bowl.

.....and as I said he doesn’t automatically make it. But if we insist on picking an All Rounder then he does. If not a batting line up of KW, Root, Taylor and Nicholls looks pretty appealing to me.

2 players easily knocked out by Stokes. Both Nicholls, and whoever is chosen at 6/7 out of CdG or Mitchell or Santner.
At the moment he is also a better batsman than Taylor.
So, in a WTC final at Lords or Southampton. he is better than all those 3. (3 out of the 4 positions from 3 to 6 in a conventional batting order assuming Watling moved back to orthodox 7. Christ the whole entire reason Watling bats 6 is because CDG and Santner aren't as good a batsman as Stokes, and Mitchell is a pup)
If in an away series in India, as the most recent series to judge him on, I might not drop Nicholls for him (as Nicholls is very good v spin). But still 2 other 'vacant' top 6/7 spots for him to occupy. Don't need to fudge the specialist spinners (Patel and Sommervile) by picking a spinner allrounder (Santner)

Probably a fair call, he’s surviving a bit on reputation at the moment. Hopefully he’s only one big innings away from redemption though.

Curiously, I believe we have not played a test at Southampton and India have played 2 lost 2.
