A session by session analysis for the whole series might be interesting. I thought that 36 was made out to be more than it was. I think it might be top 5 in the most amazing things ever in the history of test cricket. Or maybe I was just pissed that I was playing club cricket, Aussies were spoofing all over the place and my night of cricket viewing and beers was stymied. A couple sneered at me for my reluctance to celebrate 😄

Ponting in comms was saying on Day 3 that guys like Washington and Siraj are exposed to so much high level play at home now, along with mentoring from international players and coaches through IPL and other competitions.
Sure, you can only get 11 out there at a time, but when you're selecting those 11 from the best of a nation that large, it has to have an effect.
At the same time we debuted a couple of blokes who did alright, but I think we gave Starc too many chances instead of trying someone else, and obviously the batting didn't perform well enough in the first 2 Tests.
Sure exposure to top players, but to execute at test level is still another thing. What it also doesn't show that they had to use 20 players for this series, and it is not like you can fly anyone else in at short notice for injuries. None of your stats are comparable for that type of scenario. In fact there is probably not too many comparable anyway. It is a remarkable achievement and it should just be left at that!
Im also still in shock at how far Starc has fallen, when he is on form he is unplayable, but has been so inconsistent of late.
Incredible series that could have gone any different way, I suspect Paine's "cant wait to get you to the Gabba" will be replayed even more now, which although funny is also shit, because it does detract from the cricket from both teams.
Lastly surely it is not illegal to clone Pat Cummins , Australia should look into that, although on a losing team he would be one of my first picked bowlers worldwide.

I'm not sure what the first class scenario in India is like, but I think it would be slightly more broad (if more variable in quality) than Sheffield Shield.

Nic hardly needs my support and I am quite surprised I am the one offering some, but Paine's apology after the last test came across as one of the better ones on record.
@NTA Im sure first class has more depth than anywhere, but the Gabba is our Eden Park, throw that into the mix.. for guys to win there without first choice players is amazing.

Paine has done nothing wrong. He's a class act.
I do take exception at the fluffybunny that reported the Indians not wanting to play in Brisbane and surprise surprise, King fuck knuckle Haddon just had to spout off on National television that the Indians were scared to play there because of the ground's record. Pillock

As someone (you?) said earlier: we're way out of the bounds of known statistics here.
The Gabba is usually the first Test of a series so is a good setup for us against visiting teams. This time it wasn't the First Test and we were clearly hurting from the previous loss and draw (that might as well have been a loss).
I believe no cricket had been played there recently so the wicket prep was different as well - no square to rough up the ball and create some reverse swing. Starc being kept on past the dictates of form.
"The Streak" was always going to need a great effort to break it, and India did under the unusual circumstances of a series affected by massive injuries and COVID, so even more power to them.

I kept waiting for Baz McCullum type fields where there is 8 players around the bat or ultra attacking fields after they got Puj and Agarwal out. But that's the remarkable thing about the Indian approach. Poor old Paine was never afforded that luxury as he had to keep some defence because of the batting intent. A bloody tricky situation and again incredible tactics and execution from India.
98 times out of 100, a team adopting the Indian approach gets rolled reasonably comfortably and receives brickbats for not taking it seriously.
This day was one out of the box

I'd argue with 150 to get he still could have gone for a more aggressive field. EDIT: particularly for Lyon who hit a purple patch

@NTA yeah sure, I think so too, especially with Lyon, but I can see why he didn't.
But yeah good point. We just saw Aussie out beaten by a team who basically stared them down and out believed them. That is rare - God knows we've failed abysmally everytime we've tried it, world cup final, last test series

Is there any other sport that can hold such suspense for hours on end?
I was fucken glued to the screen. Forgot about dinner, answered no phone call, lost all track of time - i wouldn't be surprised to see the Mrs has packed up and left!
Is it because there are so many permutations for each ball? So many game changing things could occur at each ball? And then you have about 30 seconds to imagine all those things happening as the bowlergoes back to his mark. And then the process goes on for hours.
The only similar thing is a kick at goal or a putt or something but it's only for a few seconds
Test cricket like this, and our Pakistan game must be the best!
