Why?
I'll have a go.
It's an unnecessary distortion of the principle of playing the game in the field of play.
It opens up stupid questions like: can I run, unimpeded outside the line, past the touch judge and sky camera crew then jump into the field of play to take a pass or tackle someone? Why not?
Duncan McKenzie for the mighty takaka club side in the 80's used to run outside the line for kick-offs and totally blindside the kick receiver. The receiver got smashed, dangerously, because he wasn't watching who was coming from behind the teenage mothers with their prams 🙂
It's not easy for a touch judge to accurately judge.
Basically if you are outside the field of play, get your fat arse inside it to participate in the game like everyone has had to do for 100 years, ( in all sports).
