Five Greatest Black Caps of the Past 50 years
-
Inspired by the AB thread. This is for TEST cricket only.....
Sir Paddles
Hogan
DV
Rossco
KWSurprisingly straightforward and the fact a couple of those mentioned probably aren’t ‘World’ greats indicates the difference between this and our Rugby team.
In my opinion three guys walk in ( one more emphatically than the other two ) but interested if anyone has any genuine contenders instead of Vettori and Taylor.

Bond? Amazing, if shortened, test record. 87 wickets at 22 from 18 tests - with a heap against Aus in Aus puts him right up there for me.
Vettori is the most marginal for mine. Amazing for us - but a gently turning spinner in NZ, who never ran through sides consistently, even in helpful conditions is tough. The batting was a bonus.
wait - are we including all three forms, or just tests? If all three, I'll withdraw and apologise, but there are other names to come in then
-
Paddles, Kane, and Crowe.
The rest are going to be substandard.
I've watched Taylor hole out to midwicket in a test, then trudge off looking at the bottom of his bat waaaaay too many times to want to put him in there.

Bond isn’t in contention for me simply cos he played fuck all tests, we all remember how brilliant he was. Actually this counts against Cairns too who missed as many as he played, son of Lance came bloody close though.....and I do know he polarises a few here.
Vettori gets there through longevity, guts, effort, captaincy and the fact he held together some fucken terrible sides at times. I wish he was playing now, he’d thrive in this team.

I can’t disagree but we’re not spoilt for other compelling choices.

Test? ODI? Seperate lists?
Mate just try to get to 5 first
You wouldn’t be so cocky if the A stood for Afghanistan.
Fuck me, some legends would miss out on the top five aussies though.
Ponting wouldn’t make my team just as one example.
-
Tests:
M Crowe
KW
R Taylor
HadleeConsidering Turner (but then you'd also have to consider Rigor who has a similar record), Reid (not enough tests?), Bond (not enough tests? Clearly our best strike rate), Baz (not our best keeper and also not among the best bats, but as a bat/keeper? up there). Vettori or Fleming as most test contributions. It's quite hard.
If I apply the criteria of who would be is discussion for a spot in a world XI? Def the ones named plus maybe Bond, maybe Watling (although his stats are very good he would probably be 5th or 6th choice behind much stronger candidates like Dhoni and Gilchrist.)

He would if 'A' stood for asshole.

you've been waiting years for this eh. Quality trolling.
On the other hand, if the list were 'assholes who played cricket', you'd be in like Flynn (Haddin only counts twice yo)

Always tough for a keeper who isn’t called Gilly to get a mention. Also McCullums record isn’t that incredible, plus don’t forget he played loads as a specialist batsman.

Chris Cairns could secure a result like very few. Allegedly my lawyer has advised me to say.
His test career was squeaky clean.
That’s good enough for me. Onya Chris !
Beats Vettori on both counts in the allrounder category. Paddles beats them both by virtue of a hugely superior bolwing stat

With Vettori being a spinner it’s fair to saying bowling averages don’t always tell the whole story ( after all quite a few average better than Warnie )
Cairns was ‘better’ than DV but loses out through all the tests he missed
Paddles batting stats are pretty irrelevant to be honest. He coulda been worse than Chris Martin and he woulda been picked here.
-
Dan gets my vote if nothing else for the years he spent carrying us. Bowl a shitload on an unsuitable deck. Take wickets. Also keep the scoring rate down. Also come in at 5-120 and score 70-odd to avoid the follow-on. I'm surprised he can walk given his back must be wrecked.

Fellas, my advice is to concede gracefully. Example:

Legendary arseholes who were also great players would still get to 5 fairly easily over here for Test and ODI.

you would struggle to pick the 5 greatest Australian Cricketers from 95-2005
