Not a bad break, his fend is going to cause trouble for some defenders who lack that technical skill of tackling. Talk is the coaching staff want to use him as a utility option (running back/kick return/safety).
-

The unnamed 49ers head coach says Hayne still has to work on a few things if he wants to make the final squad. One of the big things was he needed to "get low" when running but watching the above gif Hayne hits the line the way a secondrower would and has the benefit of guys obstructing for him. Once he breaks the line then it is no different to a break away in the NRL.

Is Tim Tebow still a thing? He is trying out for the Philly Eagles as a QB -- he won't make the roster as the team is settled with three QBs - Bradford, Sanchez, Barkley -- but he threw a couple of times and scored a TD. Better off trying for Cleveland or Buffalo as both have zero QBs.
-

Hayne has always had a more upright running style than even most NRL players. The thing that has been good about Hayne is that he knows how to spot the gap and make the most of it. In preseason those gaps are big, if he makes the final squad (and I hope he does) then he'll soon realise in the real stuff that those gaps get smaller and smaller.

I hope my Eagles don't waste their time with Tebow. Bradford will be our man this year. And from the reports I've read it was Barkley that impressed in the preseason opener.
-

Why is Tebow still trying to be a quarterback? With his size, and feet, he could have been a tight end of some ability.

Tomsula was non-committal but you can't help but be impressed. I know it's only preseason but Hayne looks like he belongs in the league -

I am already amazed that he has got to where he has (pre-season games) in such a specialised sport. If he makes a starting roster, I will be blown away. Surely one of the great cross code sporting achievements of all time - to come from League to a helmeted game like that. Amazing stuff and well done to him. When he started, I didn't believe he would have a show.
-

He'll probably win the superbowl again now. Worth more than Rivers but not more than Big Ben however.

Hayne with a couple of eye catching returns this morning

And now a big gain from running back. He's certainly giving this a real shot.

I know bugger all about NFL - but he seems to be going pretty well. This footage is from the pre season game earlier this morning:

No doubt we'll see a few more NFL talent scouts in this part of the world over the next couple years....
-

Calling it - the Hayne Plane will be the kick and punt returner for the 49ers and 3rd string RB behind Carlos Hyde and Reggie Bush. Might be worth a free agent pick up in some of my larger fantasy leagues.

League back 3's are well suited to punt return and RB play
-

Canefan - agree on Inglis. Slater may have been a little small?

I honestly thought Jarryd had no chance. There are so many talented US college players who've grown up playing the game. I'll be very happy if I'm proven wrong - which appears almost certain now....
-

Is it a case then of these guys being skilled at fitting the mould but not necessarily breaking it? Being programmed into the system? One thing I noticed when watching College football with a mate (who is into the sport bigtime) is that its more adventurous than the NFL because of the way the game has evolved.

Hayne has years of professional sport and working in space - though here he's relying on blockers doing their job. The field is narrower, but there are less blokes once you're through the line who are likely to get back there, and if you make that 10 yards that is what the coach wants, most of the time.

Imagine a scenario where the 49ers put another punt returner or a wide receiver/running back on the field, and teach them pass and catch. Let he and Hayne work off each other, and while you lose a potential blocker, the threat of passing the ball - while not acceptable in terms of the percentage plays of the modern game - a heck of a threat to my eyes. Everyone zeroes in on the ball carrier because its only one target. If Hayne threw a dummy pass today, no-one would buy it and he'd get annihilated. But what if he DID get an offload away to a guy two yards away who sprints, untouched, to the end zone? Next game, people would be watching out for that shit.

People would lose their shit IF the coach ever agreed to it.
