@Bovidae I find the whole process terribly frustrating from start to finish. I've vented my criticism before, so won't repeat it, but it's sad to see talented players miss out due to the way the selections are taking place for both camps and teams.

@Stargazer There are definitely some players in the Barbarian team that I expected to make the NZ Schools team, and I am sure other players good enough to be involved that weren't even selected.

    I'll pick my XV later.

Great to see Isi Saumaki St Andrews winger selected, he is a star in the making big with real pace.

This would be my top XV based on who has been picked in the squad, and what I have seen live and on TV.

1 Mason Tupaea (Hamilton Boys' High School)
2 James Mullan (Rangiora High School)
3 Havila Molia (St Paul's Collegiate)
4 Alan Craig (St Kentigern College)
5 Jamie Hannah (Christchurch Boys' High School)
    6 Che Clarke (Kings College)
    7 Fletcher Anderson (Christ's College)
8 George Methven (St Bede's College)
9 Noah Hotham (Hamilton Boys High School)
10 Ajay Faleafaga (St Peter's College, Auckland)
    11 Luron Iosefa (Kings College)
12 Riley Higgins (St Patrick's College Silverstream)
13 Isi Saumaki (St Andrew's College)
14 Blake Makiri (St Peter's Cambridge)
15 Oliver Foote (Hamilton Boys High School)

In the forwards, I think the only question mark would be at 6. It could be Torian Barnes. I actually expected Te Rama Reuben to make this team. While Hannah plays 6 for CBHS there are better options so he goes back to lock.

In the backs, maybe Caleb Tangitau at fullback but Foote was selected ahead of him in the Whetton XV , as was Chicago Doyle in the Haden XV.

Jadin Kingi from Sacred Hearts is Bruce Robertson's grandson.

He looks like a good prospect.

Bovidae.Value your input with NZ Secondary School rugby and your team looks strong.A question I’d like to ask,did you watch the two boys from Whanganui Lennox and Godfrey during their season?I thought they both played well at St Paul’s.I see you didn’t go with the big lock Holland.Bit slow I thought .

Only just discovered that the Crusaders finally published their list of U18 players on their website (backdated).

    Latest News: Crusaders Rugby

    Latest News: Crusaders Rugby

Keep up to date with all the latest news out of the Crusaders camp.

This list also includes the female players. Jorja Miller was one of the girls attending the camp. Some of you will remember her from the Condor 7s and World School 7s. It must be her last year in school, I think. It will be interesting to see how she progresses. She looked like a mini, female McCaw, destined for a big future in women's rugby.

I thought Godfrey played well at 1st 5 when he came on in the 2nd half. Lennox was OK but I would rate him as the 4th of the halfbacks involved in that match. I expected Iobu to be in with a good chance as he was in the Barbarian Schools team last year, and often those players progress to the top team the following year. Hannah was the same, which is why I think he would be picked with Craig. Hannah is a beanpole though so needs to pack on the weight. Holland is huge and fairly mobile for his size but I doubt he would start ahead of the other two.

I didn't get to see many CNI games as they usually clashed with the Super 8 games, apart from the St Paul's-St Peter's game which was on TV.

Yes I agree with you about Lennox, but he had a surprising influence with his team mate in that second half.I think they were operating behind a better pack though.

The other thing I will say is that a few of the players selected in these teams in 2019 are playing M10 Cup this year so it will be interesting to see how many, and who, make that step up quickly.

An amusing little story to come out of the boys camp at St Paul’s.Tom and Tana asked two boys from the same school what defence pattern they used. They both gave different answers.,so they asked the third boy from the same school what defence system they used.He gave his answer .Tana and Tom said well that’s not what your mates said.He replied “ Well that’s why our defence was bloody crap Sir “ he replied.

Fabian Holland is hugely overrated. He’s 6”8. That’s all he’s got going for him. The other cbhs lock Alex Yallop is a better prospect. He’s 6”6 and a lot better around the park.

Meanwhile, the next generation of Kiwi league talent will be assembled by the NZRL over the next couple of weeks, with a number of representative union players present. From the Blues U18 squad, Ali Leiataua, Jeremiah Asi and Tony Tafa made the NZRL Schools 18s squad for 2020 alongside Ethan Faitaua from the Crusaders U18 squad, Maea Tema-Schmidt from the Hurricanes and Austin Anderson from the Chiefs. (Asi and Tafa both also made the 2020 New Zealand Barbarians Schools side that was announced — for ceremonial purposes only — on Monday.) In their Resident 16s squad, there’s another young union talent worth keeping an eye on: King’s College midfield back Francis Manuleleua, who is already part of the Warriors academy system and made the Blues U18 squad as a Year 11 in September.
