Chiefs 2021

@Bovidae Purely just kicking, I thought he was in charge of all skills? Either way, you don't look at the teams he's been involved in & see the noticeable difference he has made. Mike Rogers will definitely be a shot then if that's the roles they're after, he takes forwards/scrum & McMillan takes defence at BOP whereas Bourke is backs/attack.
NZRU/Chiefs have to take some responsibility around the overall coaching fit & contract lengths when they knew Cooper was going to finish up. Generally when you're a coach at any level, you have some sort of say on who your assistants are so that you ensure you can work well together and have similar philosophies e.g. Razor had Jase Ryan come up through the ranks with him then they hand picked O'Gara once Macdonald left. This Chiefs situation looks like Gatland had no say in who his assistants were, the year off just makes that even more of a shitshow as do you choose someone Clayton works well with or Gatland for the next 2years?

It could be kicking and skills.
Nick White is the scrum coach and Roger Randle the attack coach.
The current assistants were all appointed under Colin Cooper's tenure.
McMillan was involved with Chiefs' trainings this season so he will have an idea of what is needed within the coaching group for 2021.
-
@Bovidae considering the attack, all season, looked like they met in the carpark before the game
and our defensive structure was club standard
and our basic skills were shithouse
they should all get the chop
-
They did ok before the lockdown when they were playing on Cooper muscle memory.

Gallagher Chiefs 2020 Coaches’ Player of the Year Sean Wainui has re-signed with the Gallagher Chiefs.
The 24-year-old electrifying winger has re-signed with the Club until the end of 2022.
Wainui, a passionate Gallagher Chief said it was an easy decision for him and his whanau to make.
“Being a Chief is something I have always dreamed of. To be able to continue this journey and perform for this team is something I really cherish.
“I love the culture, especially our Maori connection within the Chiefs and Chiefs Country. I really enjoy being with the brothers, the hard mahi and the challenges we face together. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” said Wainui.
Chiefs Rugby Club CEO Michael Collins said Wainui is an exceptionally talented player.
“Sean is an exciting player; he has produced a number of amazing moments for the Gallagher Chiefs since his debut in 2018. Receiving the Gallagher Chiefs Coaches’ Player of the Year award is testament to his work ethic, impressive form and influential leadership within our squad. We are excited to see what he will achieve over the coming years and will continue to enjoy watching him proudly represent Taranaki in the Mitre 10 Cup,” said Collins.
Wainui has 38 Gallagher Chiefs caps to his name and has scored a total of 65 points since his debut.

I've just read that article. Fletcher Smith is unsigned too. Sign him up Chiefs.
-
Great news that Roe is signed. Yes, get Smith also.
-
Naitoa Ah Kuoi confirmed to be signed for 2021.
-
When is Retallick back? 2022?

But I am thinking of an experienced lock to complement the young locks. Unfortunately there aren't that many around.
He’s not hugely experienced but Dalzell would be a good pick up for someone. There’s no room for him at the Blues

But as you say, Dalzell isn't experienced either, even compared to the other locks in the squad. The Chiefs could just as easily sign someone like Parsons. McMillan might look at one of the BOP locks.

@gt12 I would think that the Chiefs already have their 3 hookers sorted. Remember that Harris should be back. There might not be too many contracts available for hookers. Maybe the Highlanders?
We have two good(ish) ones and one shit one don't we? Can't we ship him off?
-
@Bovidae said in Blues 2021:
@gt12 Slater will be the 3rd hooker and is likely signed to develop for the future. I still think players from within the franchise area should be preferred.
I don't give a toss about this, it's a franchise system.
Slater is good, I was meaning that we should dump Taukei'aho; he's a hopeless thrower.
-
The list of hookers that still have issues with lineout throwing is a long one.
I'm a Taukei'aho fan. It didn't help him or Slater that the Chiefs didn't have any tall locks as targets.

Is this a coaching issue? I don't see how so many of these guys can all be so poor at it.
-
@gt12 It has to be but there are 3 parts to a successful lineout (throw, lifters, jumper). It's not always the hooker's fault unless the throw is crooked.
Taylor has had some average throwing games this season, and he's meant to be one of our best.
-
-
A few hints about the squad (some new talent from within the region and some surprises). I hope the latter is more than just Bryn Gatland.
-
I like the look of S. Misa. He is strong and hard. Don't know much about his throwing though.
-
Alaimalo off to the Landers on a 3 year deal.
Probably be first choice fullback down there, unless there is someone else that I can't think of right now...??
-
@Gunner Hunt and Koroi probably the other options, a big tall bloke as competition will be good for us as if you guys take Gatland Koroi and Hunt are also our 10 cover
