And all of a sudden Liverpool are back to life and dealing to Spurs. Tough season for the wise pundits this one.

seems to be going in patches, where each of the big sides has a run of form, then it turns around a month later.

Southampton were on the receiving end of some shocking calls this morning and this is coming from a Villa fan. How Matty Cash didn't concede a penalty from the most blatant handball I'll never know as he virtually made a save to a Danny Ings shot and then Danny Ings then gets pulled up for offside due to his sleeve being offside haha. Villa were barely worthy of a draw let alone a win but at the same time we dominated Burnley and lost on Thursday so you take them while ya can!

It was a very good header from Ross Barkley for the crucial goal. Jack Grealish was absolutely outstanding again. Gary Lineker and Ian Wright both picking him as Player of the Season:

@sparky Yeah Grealish has been outstanding as usual, but with decent help this year too from Watkins, Traore, Barkley and El Ghazi all taking the pressure off him this season, unlike last season when he was all on his own.

Yet again the tweaks to interpretation show how each situation is different. The guideline is now that if it strikes another part of the body and then hits the hand/arm then it isn't a penalty - which is fine on the edge of a crowded penalty area but not when you're a couple of yards out blocking a shot. It means an outfield player diving to stop a shot on the line wouldn't give a penalty away if it hit his knee then his hand.

Anyway, so many teams are evenly matched and they are cramming in 2 games per week, so results are random and the better team doesn't always win. The crisis now seems to have landed at Spurs having been passed from Man U to Man C to Arsenal to Chelsea and then to Liverpool.

And Fulham are looking further and further adrift as they can't find a win (even against West Brom) while all the teams above them are getting them (even Newcastle). If their target is 38 points to be in with a chance, they need 24 points in 18 games - so at least 6 wins.

@KiwiPie Stupid fucking game anyway .....

I did say we'd fucking fuck up against WBA and Brighton after having battled well against the big dogs.

    I hate being right

Need a couple of lucky wins when you play badly - other teams seem to manage it.

Of local interest, Winston Reid has been loaned out to English Championship club Brentford by West Ham. Reid was one of many central defenders linked to Liverpool in recent days.

He's 32 now and the prime of his career was disrupted so much by injury. He joined West Ham after the World Cup in 2010 and in over 10 years has only played 194 games for them. Brentford are currently tearing it up in the championship so it could be a real chance for him to show what he can still do.

@KiwiPie And he could still offer something to the All Whites.

Liverpool signed two defenders today. Probably neither would have been on the radar in a normal January.

In the past Klopp has worked his new recruits in pretty slowly, as he reckons the need to "learn the system". One assumes he does not have that luxury this time.

When it rains, it pours. Just one of those seasons where injuries cruelly diminish the strength of your squad. Doesn't help that for a period there we couldn't score.

Southampton seem to struggle when they lose a man early! Same thing happened with Leicester last season. Probably didn't help to lose another man at 6-0!

Wonder how many times the EPL has seen 4 reds on 1 day.

And Liverpool bomb out again at home - no defeat for 2 years and then lose consecutive home games - in fact behind closed doors playing at home doesn't seem an advantage at all given there were 5 away wins out of 5 today. And this season there are more away wins than home wins and Man U, Leicester, Everton, Villa, Leeds and Brighton al have much better away than home records.

Liverpool v City is already shaping up as a decisive game - should City win, they will be 10 ahead of Liverpool with a game in hand and you can almost write Liverpool off as title contenders. A Liverpool win and they close the gap to 4 and it is all one.

Liverpool have drawn and lost twice at home to teams that were in the bottom 5.
