To be fair to the school, the Pro was just one option. They also said we could just get him an Air if we wished, which would have brought the total cost down to a bargain $1700 all-in...Stupid machine better last him all of high school!
On the plus side, hopefully he uses it for some music recording stuff, I understand most software works better on apple ?
how heavy is his bag, there is a big weight difference, I would have thought the Air is enough for most people. Oh for video editing yeah the extra grunt would be good.
The Boy uses his Macbook Air (2015 model) for video editing and it does the job, apparently. Adobe After Effects and Premier Pro.
Obviously would be quicker if it was a Macbook Pro thingy, but that is a stupid amount of money. We're thinking of buying him a pro once he graduates. The Air has been going since he started in 2017.
The new Air would easily handle that. My M1 chip Air is way better than my two year old Pro in just about every way.

I have one from 2013! But call me cynical I wonder if Apple delib make people who need just a little more power buy the Pro, the Air is better value and easier to lug around but for 2-5% of jobs for many just doesn't quite seem as fast...wonder if it is deliberate..not a great fan of current Apple company (policy, consumer focus, pricing) but still like their laptops..

@nostrildamus Macs get on my tits. The OS shits me because I don't use it very often and therefore find it quite difficult, on the rare occasions I need to check something on the kids' units.
My daughter's Air kept getting filling the HDD, and it was was due to me logging in as an admin to set up something. That account was running in the background and consuming tens of GB of space.
I was trying to connect a network drive. How fucking hard is that as a concept on a Mac? Windows may not be perfect but the concept of drive letters is mint compared to the way Mac runs it.

Does an equivalent (and cheaper) Dell not have the required social cachet?

I believe the decision is left up to an individual school - as long as it is uniform across that school to reduce issues with technical and teacher support. In the case of ours, Apple. As it is a Catholic school, I'm betting the decision came from the Diocese so that they can bulk buy licensing and support and get deals with Apple (pathetic tho they might be).

@nta Open Finder, Connect to Server and type in the address or browse if it’s on the same network, click Connect. It’s then in the sidebar under Location. Add it to a list of favourites in the same window if you want so you don’t have to locate it ever again. Add it to login items for a user if you want it to load every time they log in.
What am I missing?

@machpants all good, she can have her brothers one, with his name engraved on it
Now you mention it, I think I recall being told (our neighbour is a teacher there)

Of course it's deliberate. You spend less money as you are buying less computer (slower CPU, less memory, etc). That's just price point choice, and is powerful enough for most people's computer usage.
I err on buying the fastest you can affort, especially for Macs -as unlike Dells which I've also had - these laptops last forever. You buy faster than necessary now, so you can run the latest software in a few years.

Simplicity.
Same action in Windows after hitting START | cmd
net use z: \192.168.1.200\Public$ /PERSISTENT:YES
I'm sure there is a brilliant way to do this on the command line in Mac, but when I open "Finder" it lists a whole heap of shit and is poorly ordered.

@nta Yeah, but we don’t have apple stores in NZ. We really get hosed over here, the support network that others take for granted just doesn’t exist. You can’t get 3rd party support people charging a grand for a battery replacement when an apple store will do it while you wait for a hundred bucks. But in NZ that’s the reality, they have these service partners who are just ripping people off because there’s effectively no competition from apple itself.
And the trade in service needs you to be able to get the laptop to them. Which for us would mean couriering them overseas at our own expense. Hence my collection of laptops.

@nta If I was doing it on a Mac it would be Command+k (takes you straight to the Connect To Server dialog), then type smb://nameofcomputer/nameofdrive then hit Return. You can enter the address as an IP address too, but us Mac people are no good with remembering numbers, we’re creative dontchaknow

The device is a standalone NAS so doesn't report back a name in the same way as a computer
No doubt I could edit the equivalent of a Host File entry on the Macs in question, but really could not be fucking bothered learning how.
The kids probably won't use it, but I've managed to get them set up with your instructions - thanks! Now we wait until they fill up their existing storage and bitch that I didn't provide them a solution

@jc there's a tradein program with Macs isn't there?
yup and ipads
Trying to get the wife and daughter to give up their iPhone 8s for a newer, faster model, but "why spend the money?"
Well because they're EOL and you won't be able to trade them in soon! Let's get the $100 while it is still good to get...
