I saw the usual complaints on FB about Brett Cameron. Some people were suggesting to move Josh McKay to 1st five-eighth. I'd say Fergus Burke, because I have no idea whether McKay has ever played 1st five. What do you Canterbury supporters think about this suggestion?
-
@Stargazer without exaggeration, i heard him compared to DC when playing 10 at school
It was one of the reasons i was stoked the landers signed him originally, J'oane hadn't proved himself yet so another option at 10 was attractive -
McKay carries around a big rep as a 10. During Saturdays' game one of the commentators was raving on about his feats at 10 for the CBHS 1st XV, with Will Jordan at fullback. The closest he's come, in my memory, to playing 10 at first class level was a Canterbury game where he was cover there but never slotted in at 10. On the one hand, he must have a helluva upside as a first-five, but on the other, successive Canterbury coaches haven't come close to using him there. I have a function Thursday night where Reuben Thorne is our speaker, so I may pose the question!
-
Yes it was around 2015, his last year at school where all you would hear was how McKay was he next big thing and how he was the next big 10 to come out of CBHS blah blah blah. He hasn't played there since.
@Stargazer It does get a bit tiresome the criticism about Cameron at 10 tbh. Yeah he's average but he's the scapegoat every time they lose.
-
@African-Monkey You mean, like every 10 since King Carlos until Plummer at the Blues? And every 9?
-
@Stargazer Yeah good point.

Nah. We've blamed pretty much everybody. Including Deans.

Mataele out for the season.
It’s another blow for the already dinged up red and blacks, who have been forced to pluck players from club rugby and blood a plethora of rookies through their 3-2 start to the campaign.
Last week against the Turbos in Palmerston North, six players from the champion Canterbury under-19 side featured.
”Yep, we are [being tested],” Brown said ahead of Sunday’s home game against Waikato.
“But that's the nature of the game. I think the luxury and really pleasing thing is we're able to fill the gaps with some quality local guys.”
That includes uncapped Sydenham lock Caleb Aperahama, who has been named on the bench to play the Mooloos after the All Blacks opted not to release Cullen Grace or Mitchell Dunshea this week.
There is still no sign of the injured Brodie McAlister, Dallas McLeod and Oli Jager, although McLeod is nearing a return from the toe injury he suffered in the season-opener against North Harbour.
Loose forward Tom Sanders will miss a second straight game, having taken a head-knock against Wellington in round four and presenting “delayed symptoms”.
However, Canterbury have welcomed back loosehead prop Daniel Lienert-Brown, who missed the past three games with a hamstring complaint.
