North vs South

Just an aside.
I am (was) looking forward to the match.
A rep match with a bit of parochialism about it.
Regardless of the selection qualification it was/Is still us versus the inbreds. And we'll show them that their precious Saders apparent dominance is built on the back of the size of their cheque book. Ha! Take that you poxy little island at the bottom of the world.
But I digress ...
I think they've pick a good qualifier with first provincial team.
If they'd picked place of birth, current province or current SR franchise we'd hear the same whinging.
Draw a line somewhere and they have.
Good concept especially in this environment.
Much better than a god awful borefest probables v possibles with absolutely nothing on it.
Now that the Blues seem to be buying their way to title contention I am looking forward these accusations thrown at them too, much like England is now accused of poaching...

personally i would have prefered either
A ) Probables v Possibles - if they actually want any trial aspects, they were good, there was always a bit of an underdog vibe for the possibles, will they get one over on the incumbents
B ) final First XV - if this is supposed to be a bit more of a spectical, high schools love bragging about their old boys that have done well, COVID aside, they could have had videos in the lead up of the big names going back to these schools, watch parties, training/team photos in their old jerseys, rivals schools from the same island getting behind the same team or conversely lots of banter about "my school has three in the team where yours only has one" kind of shit
currently....its just this game, which will be great im sure...but it could ave been a bit more
I'd be vehemently against that. That rewards poaching schools. Not that players are often poached from a school from the other Island, but still. It should either be the school which they first played 1st XV for (so the poached school, not the poaching school), or the school they spent most time at for their education.

Well I would gear it so that the likes of DMac plays for the south, the Barrets would be in the same team and I'm unsure on Aaron Smith
@booboo said in North vs South:
@Hooroo based on what?
@Hooroo said in North vs South:
Loosely, where they are from. I haven't thought about it too hard. I find it weird that DMac is in the North team.
I think that's what @booboo is getting at.
No matter what criteria/cut-off you came up with to define "where they are from" - there's going to be one or two, or more, which "don't seem right", at least to somebody.@Kiwiwomble 's suggestion of final First XV - probably has slightly more meaning, but you'd still have people claiming it is a "Mickey Mouse" criteria, and "such-and-such has spent his entire 20 years professional career in the South, but is playing for the North - ridiculous!"
-
@Stargazer school where they spent most of their time then i guess, i just suggest final because you're final years would normally be when you shone the most
...not a huge reward though is it and well after the fact...i dont think that would encourage more poaching...to be mentioned a decade after the fact before a one off game

When I listed a NI and SI team based on 1st XV school Tokolahi was the only player that moved islands, and he isn't in either squad anyway.
DMac?
-
@Tim said in North vs South:
I think Bovidae means players that moved to a school on a different island.
Yes. Both Cane and DMac, for example, moved schools within the NI and SI, respectively.
Tokolahi went from Sacred Heart (Auckland) to St Bedes (Chch).

We've had those comments since getting Carlos back in the day. Crusaders fans just don't seem to like admitting their chequebook recruitment policy.

That is true. You guys just sucked at it for the last wee while.
Benji Marshall. I still forget and then smile when I think of his time at the Blues.
-
@Kiwiwomble No, my teams would redistribute players to their island of origin but would be heavily stacked towards the NI (Whitelock and Taylor would in the NI team). Only Tokolahi would have a choice of islands. There are some other players selected who may fall into that category now, without knowing their background.

All in the past mate! We get the good shit now
It's funny seeing a crusaders fan talk about buying titles when they had a Counties player as captain
-
@Kirwan There's a difference though between signing a player who has already played NPC - and even more so - Super Rugby, and signing a player straight out of school. Kieran Read had never played for Counties when he signed with the Crusaders.

And what is this moral / ethical distinction of which you speak?

Not really, it's still buying talent from another region. Chequebook recruitment.
All teams do it, but the Crusaders more than most. It's just funny to see someone talk about the Blues buying a title when that's exactly what the Crusaders do.
And they'd be crazy not to.
-
@Snowy Some people seem to have a problem with "cheque book signings" or poaching at SR level.
Only signing players from other SR franchises or NPC provinces from other SR catchments can possibly fall into that category. Signing players from other SR catchments who never even played NPC there, isn't a cheque book signing or poaching IMO (as these players still need a significant number of years of development). Also signing players from other SR (catchments or franchises) who didn't get sufficient playing opportunities isn't poaching IMO.
I couldn't care less, although I prefer SR franchises to sign players from their own catchment first.
