'Super Rugby' 2021

That suggestion reminds me of the AFL situation in SA. Adelaide was created as a greenfields club to represent the city, but later Port Adelaide was elevated from the SA league. This created massive division.
Fair point. I'm not so much opposed to an existing team (or merged identity) as such - although it can exclude former rival fans.
It's more a concern that just combining existing local rugby resources won't be enough.
Solid finances is the #1 thing needed by any new pro team. Just scraping by, dollarwise, won't generate a sustainable franchise. Appealing to a relatively wide catchment will also help.
Having said all that, Port Adelaide still managed to find the wherewithal to make it...

If NZ go without OZ we need more teams. A stronger NPC based competition is never going to happen so:
...How is that better than playing the Aus teams? They have more players, an audience. Diluting the Super sides woudl be a disaster, particularly if you leave the Crusaders untouched.
Seriously, I think you'd have all the quality problems, but none of the upside

Not sure if this was posted earlier.. This was in a NZH article
As for the future of the competition beyond this season, Hurricanes chief executive Avan Lee revealed to the Herald that two teams, one possibly being the Western Force, are willing to stay in New Zealand next year. "There are I understand teams from elsewhere in the world who are prepared to base themselves in New Zealand for a competition should the borders stay closed," Lee said. "It's working through that over the next few weeks and hopefully we'll have something to look at."

Taranaki to move the Force?

Now to be serious. I can only hope this is confused mud slinging.
Because that would be a shit result. And the crisis would have been wasted with temporary gap-filler rather than taken advantage of.

Yeah I hope this doesn't happen
I wonder who the other team might be? Jaguares?
Also how will the ARU react to this rumour? They are currently fighting for all five teams. Aren't the Force breaking ranks by exploring this? It'll be very messy if the other team is also Australian.

@Rapido not sure 'naki and the region is as flush as they were years back when floating the idea of a super base
That wont stop them flip flopping. Promise of 1 game a year at the Stratford athletics track, and the rest in Perth .....
-
@Bovidae I was being a bit tongue in cheek.
But the rumour makes no sense to me given Forrest is all about a presence for rugby in WA. Joining the NZ comp doesn't help with that, plus all the rugby would be at an unwatchable time for locals.

Another quote from Lee from that same article is interesting, too:
"I think having a sixth team in New Zealand, which is being discussed, has some fish hooks in terms of where do the players come from, who pays the players, and how that impacts the five Kiwi teams."
-
im worried if we made a six NZ team, it would naturally either be upper north island based and/or draw on a lot of fringe Auckland/counties/north harbour or the journeymen kind of guys...exactly the kind f players the Landers have often needed to fill the squad
I know this is a personal issue but if that was the case its not going to effect the Saders for example...so we're just going to make the gap from top of the ladder to bottom bigger...and that doesn't exactly sounds like an interesting comp
-
I’m still pissed off the NZR thought the idea of announcing it all before talking to our partners was a good idea. Oh and not as a starting position but as an application process if the teams are good enough for NZ - jesus that’s some hammatuer hour stuff.
-
@Kiwiwomble Yep, same argument that I have been making about the Aussies having 5 teams. Quality over quantity (and we have the M10 cup as well) so in this case less is more. If we could find another couple of high levels teams from somewhere then great, but don't lower the standard.
-
@Kiwiwomble Why would it necessarily be upper North Island based? Both North Harbour and Counties hardly have the turnstyles spinning rapidly when it comes to attendances at either of those two venues come NPC time.

Question for Aussie posters.
How expandable is SR Australia with Reds and Warratahs.
If, for example. Were to keep existing 5 franchises. But expand by adding existing Sydney and Brisbane clubs. Would it work if clear separation from Reds and Warratahs as clubs rather than state teams?
To answer this one - it's tough. A legacy strength and weakness for us is that our most popular teams are state based, being the Waratahs and Reds. So as you point out introducing a new city franchise would muddy the waters.
I tend to be against splitting those teams up, or creating new teams to sit alongside them in Sydney/Brisbane. I'm not sure we have the support base to begin with, and starting artificial sides is a tough business as the NRC showed.
I wonder if Rugby AU is drawn to the Pacifika idea because they could base themselves in Western Sydney (during Covid) and provide that second local team without clashing with the Tahs.
