<p>Yeah I think much of the criticism is around the supposed poor form of Crossfitters when they do the olympic type lifts. Perhaps this is warranted, perhaps not but there is no denying when doing something else like a rope climb technique criticism isn't an issue. Either you make it to the top or you don't.....</p>

<p>Poor form is poor form, no matter what sport/exercise you're doing. Problem I suppose with CrossFit - as opposed to say, Zumba - is that people jump into weights they're probably never experienced before.</p>

<p>I saw another article that was critical of CrossFit, and the theme was that CrossFit was only training for CrossFit, not anything else. Which is OK if your aim is to get better at CrossFit... which is kind of why people do it I guess. That article was just weird.</p>

<p>When we train at karate, we use <em>kihon waza</em> - basic moves - as the foundation of all learning. You need to have those right as a priority or your more advanced moves will simply not work, just like correct lifting technique</p> -

<p>I read an article from a mean looking dude (will have to seek out article in one of the mags I have at home) who ran a gym, had all the quals, and he said basically he will works quads pretty much every works out, and rarely strays too far from squats, dead lifts, pull ups and dips; they were his core exercises.</p> -

<p>It's just bullshit. Even at my low level we spend so much time on form, and if it strays too far from "good" you get yanked from the WOD (and usually get made to lower the weight). I'm sure some boxes don't do that, but I'm sure some weightlifting gyms let poor form go sometimes too. Not to mention bros at a "globo gym".</p>

<p>It boils down to this for me, there are plenty of ways to get fit and crossfit is not a bad way to do it. Also Crossfit HQ actually say often to try new sports, to use your fitness. Perhaps some of the critics could take that approach too?</p>

<p>As for the rope climbs, if you are doing 15+ without using your legs (especially your feet) then good luck...</p> -

<p>Nah, that's the latest "cool" critique of Crossfit. Crossfit includes weightlifting, gymnastics and running - you get better at doing all of those things. I've seen people train for long distance running doing nothing but Crossfit, it's amazing what lifting heavy weights does for your lungs.</p>

<p>So if your aim to get fitter and stronger, then Crossfit will help, no doubt about it. If you want to be a track athlete or a bodybuilder, then sure specialise your training but for the vast majority of people, you don't need to.</p>

<p>And in any decent box, nobody gets thrown into the weightlifting. You get trained with broomsticks and gradually moved to an empty bar, then you start adding low weight. Went you get that sorted, THEN you get into a class and doing the WOD. And even then you still get scaled for weight and movement. </p>

<p>Most of that sort of criticism is just uninformed bullshit.</p> -
<p>Yeah I quite often go up and down the firemans pole at the park a few times if there's no rope. Great for UBS.</p>

<p>All in all I've got no doubt you're right about Crossfit Kirwan, for something to produce decent all round athletes I can't think of anything better. Sure you won't get as strong as a powerlifter or your cardio won't be as good as a mountain runner but as an all rounder you'll be in great shape.</p>
