Hello Boomer...
-
@mariner4life Au contraire - I'm rich as fuck!
So are the Talley family!
People already prefer life in VR - there's millions of people playing fortnite, because their alternative is to go and wander around a fucking shopping mall with their fuck all money.
-
To the topic at hand, i am wondering what the data would have looked like 20 years ago? What were the demographics like then? Is this a new and concerning trend? Or have the majority of sports watchers always been older?
We're also in a period where sports participation levels appear to be declining (not just the junior stuff highlighted in the other thread). The culture is changing around playing organised team sport on the weekend, does this also flow through to people's engagement in watching pro-sports? When i played, i lived and breathed rugby for 10 months of the year. Training, playing, and watching. When the first two went, the 3rd quickly followed.
People are increasingly time poor, because we have allowed the system to warp our priorities, and we find new ways to impose commitments on ourselves (i want my kids to be 100% fulfilled so I'll enrole them in everything). So reduced down time combined with a boom in entertainment options is definitely going to effect traditional entertainment options.
-
@Chris-B I don't know what it says about me but while I know what it means to punch out a cone, I have no idea what fortnite is. I mean I do from context etc but I have no desire to bother to learn the detail.
As @mariner4life says I don't have enough time to do the things I'd actually physically want to do without "wasting" time in some alternative reality.
VR tourism will come - already has in a limited sense (galleries etc) but the real deal is VR porn. If I was tech savvy and looking at a start-up that's where my money would go.
-
@dogmeat Yeah - but, we're from a different generation.
I was struck about a decade ago when one of my friends (whose kids were gaming addicts) observed that he could see why they'd spend all their time playing computer games - because life in the games was more exciting and better than life outside.
You're right about VR porn - but, that will be part of M4L's "online Rome vacation". Monica Bellucci really will appear in his Roman driveway. Instead of traipsing around a bunch of churches in the heat everything will be tailored to a perfect experience. His wife probably won't be too happy about paying for the 14 day Monica plug-in though!

"plug in" he he he
stop smoking cones and watching Total Recall!!!

I can see why millennial kids would find going to a rugby game or any 'stadiumed' sport in NZ boring.
Sit their doing nothing and saying nothing for a few hours while one person out the 15,000 makes all the noise and all the flames with a press of a button.
I'd rather play a video game myself, actually.
Much more interactive back in my day. Bang on the aluminium hoardings, searching for empty beer cans with the tab inside them for more noise making, cheer and shout. Basically, get involved.
-
@Rapido it feels like such a grumpy old man thing to complain about but I so agree with you. Crap music at sporting events is an absolute blight and it actively detracts from the whole experience, to the point you don't actually want to attend.
I'm almost certain if they cut that shit out crowd numbers would go up.
-
@No-Quarter totally works at NBL games

@Rapido @Nepia would hate you. He wants everyone silent at the rugby, so he can watch intently like he is at home on the couch
Nepia hates fun
I especially hate crowd singing, join a fucking choir if you want to sing.

you open Youtube in NZ then you should be bombarded with rugby content. You shouldn't have to seek out guys who stream from their bedroom, just so you can get some analysis or coverage.
not to mention how m-f grainy some of that content is, even from 5, 10 or 20 years ago...I know technology is always improving, but when you watch some of those games from the early 2000's I may as well be drunk or watching through the bottom of a coke bottle.

And maybe, when lots of school kids are asian now and there is a lot of bad press about head injuries, you should seriously push touch rugby in schools.
RACIST!!!
-
@taniwharugby Classic games, NZ rugby lore, behind the scenes at teams clips - should all be free to watch to promote the game.
-
Special thing for me about Rugby as a kid was always having 14 mates alongside you to train with, play with and socialise with after the game.
I know kids today can make connections through their video games and social media, but they will make more long-lasting friendships, receive great hospitality and pick up some useful values by playing Rugby.
-
@raznomore yea I am still mates with as many from the school/rep golf team as my rugby teams.
Being part of a team and sharing in the losses and wins is pretty special.
-
@raznomore said in Hello Boomer...:
@sparky that can be said of most team sports.
True, but having 15 kids in a team is unique about Rugby. No game offers the opportunity for so many kids to be involved.
