AFL 2021

had been hoping this year would be when the swannies moved out of "rebuild", looked ok against the Giants on the weekend but not enough to win...so think we'll have another year of young blokes only having 1-3 quarters in them and eventually getting outlasted

@barbarian i would be pretty surprised if Hawthorn made it to be honest
Yeah same, and Sydney too. But both have a slim chance if everything goes their way.

Sydney need Buddy back doing Buddy things. You start to wonder if that is ever going to happen

Also having a sneaky look at Brownlow odds, I think Matt Rowell might be overs at $17. If (and it's a big if) he is as good as he looked in his brief stint last year then he is a top chance IMO.
As it is he's on the ninth line behind Neale, Cripps, Fyfe, Dusty, Bont, Danger, Petracca and Steele.
-
@barbarian definitely overs. If they get 10-12 wins, you think he is polling votes in all of them. That's gonna get you pretty close.
Can a young bloke who goes super hard, and has already fucked his shoulder once, stay fit though?
-
@mariner4life Well that's the question. His fortunes are tied to his health, and how good GWS is. If they are lower than 10th then you struggle to see him pulling enough votes.
But there's a narrative where the Suns improve to compete for the eight, with Rowell front and centre of that push. And in that narrative he is a great Brownlow shout. It's really hard to go back to back (so scratch Neale), Dusty tends to drift in and out of the regular season, Fyfe is great but is he three time winner great?, Cripps is going to lose touches to Walsh and Williams, and Danger is getting old.
I actually think Bont and Petracca are also decent shouts, if those teams can get beyond their 2020 placings.
-
@barbarian he'll also not have that many guys taking votes off him.
Would be a hell of a story.

we definitely do on both counts
in hind site, i think it was 2017 when he was famously only training for 15-20min a week as he had a game in him but that was t...might not have been good for him in the long run
the other side is we try and change what we do completely and stop relying on him, becasue we seem to even when hes not on the field...last year we'd have the great fast passing/running game out of our half...and then we'd bomb it forward as if he was there....and no one would be

I can't find any 2021 Demons apparel online. Anybody else in the same boat with their club?? Anyone know how to get it?
Checked the local bargain basement ๐

Bahahaha
You'll all be pleased to know the 2021 range is now available in the Dees shop. My problem now though is they don't ship to NZ!

I can forward one on to you if you really need it. I might not even swap it for a Tigers jersey.

Thoroughly recommend the 'Making Their Mark' doco on Amazon Prime. Got through the series on the weekend, it's very well made.
The last episode is the best, you get such great access to the Richmond camp on GF day. See Dimma's pre-game talk, half-time talk, 3QT address.
He may be a questionable husband, but man he comes across as an amazing leader.
-
and we're back with the now usual fixture of Richmond starting slowly and beating the Blues by 4 goals.
Carlton's team looks pretty shitty as they have a few out.
50% crowd at the 'G will still be good.
I assume it's on Ch7, and we have our first primetime game without Bruce. Now we only need to get rid of BT, Lingy, Duck, Brayshaw, and "Hame" and it might actually be tolerable
Great call BT!

oh, and to the new rules
First look at the man on the mark rule. Will the game really open up or have the coaches already found a way to slow the game down?
And the other change is the coaches have managed to get the sub back. Despite 4 on the bench constantly swapping, apparently losing a player is the worst thing in the world. It started with a concussion sub, but they have managed to get it for any injury. Stop listening to coaches!

Just wait for players to depart with 'hamstring soreness' late in the 3rd quarter, allowing teams to bring on fresh legs in the final term.
-
@mariner4life what's the man on the mark rule mate?
-
@mariner4life what's the man on the mark rule mate?
You literally have to stand on the mark, i.e. can't take a step and move around like they used too. Nor can you piss off in defence and have a teammate take your spot at the mark.
-
@antipodean 50 metre sanction I'm guessing
-
@mariner4life what's the man on the mark rule mate?
essentially, once the mark is taken, the defender on the mark must stand still right on the mark. Previously he had a lot of latitude to move sideways, which allowed him to cut off the passing lanes and usually shepherd the play towards the boundary line. Now the man with the ball should have more avenues to kick in to, and the intention is it will open up the middle of the ground.
If the guy moves around, 50m penalty instantly. Expect a goal from it, and the offended team's supporters to collectively lose their shit.
In theory it is not too bad, and the feedback from the preseason was pretty good. But lets see what happens now that we are in to the real shit.
-
@antipodean 50 metre sanction I'm guessing
Yes. My expectation is it will reward teams that flood fast. Teams that fuck around on attack are more likely to make a mistake trying to break down defences. Hopefully it works because the defence oriented games are boring for the spectator IMO.
-
Will they ever invoke " my" rule, ( the one I made up and no one has ever thought of๐):
The goalposts are "live". Rebounds off them, play on. Makes for an exciting goal line scramble.
Rebounds off one and goes through - 1 point or 6 depending on the post. Like Rugby
