Don't use those as they may be out of date - Law 9 has it per the link I posted.
Thats just the language for if it's a penalty kick. It doesn't define the red card decision making framework
There is no framework that I can find - probably because it was pretty obvious with a tip tackle.
High tackle has been given more attention as part of WR's concussion program.

Is there a link to the protocols on tip tackles? I can't find one.
Can't find one
They work through a flow diagram like the do with high tackles (link)
Over the last few years refs have checked for the initial contact with the ground. Head/neck = red and shoulder etc yellow.
They use that same deliberate structure and clearly state it.Thanks - a pity they don't have a protocol video like the one for high tackles.
I'm thinking that quite recently I saw someone get red carded for lifting tackle where the ref said the tackler had driven the ball carrier into the ground.
I'm thinking The Beast might have a nervous 24 hours - pretty close to cite-able IMO.
-
Re: the spear tackle. The landing was very similar to this one, with Ben Smith getting a yellow, not red. It's the example used in the WR Lawbook (Law 9.18).
Edit: Owens basically got talked into making it a yellow. A very soft one IMO.
-
@Stargazer Landing not too much IMO - Earls lifted him higher. Beast has gone on with the tackle - driven the Japanese guy. I reckon Barnes went for the quick yellow to avoid having to discuss red.

Seen a pic on facebook showing some Springboks not wearing their official world cup jerseys.

This whole game was poked once Barnes failed to red card Mtawarira. Japan got ripped off. The rugby public got ripped off. Would go so far as to say it also happened in the France-Wales game.
We should be talking about a France-Japan semi. But no. Grrrr. -

Thought the Boks were inaccurate in the first half.
Two potential scoring opportunities messed up through poor skills.
We can’t afford that next week against Wales. On the positive side, the best game I have seen from de Allende in ages. And very happy with our fitness. Last 20 the Bok power came through for us. But we will need to be better next week if we want to progress.
The poor handling from the backs is the only real concern for the Boks.
They've picked up plenty of wins against the ABs by backing their defence over 80mins and still getting the occasional try despite not playing much.
The defence was at that level but the attack was appalling for most of the game.Sending up the shooter in defence (normally Faf) worked really well last night
The lineout was incredible. The scrum was strong apart from one 7 man effort when the hook was missed.
Faf's box kicks were a bit erratic
Thinking of Henry's old line about the difficulty of getting up mentally three weeks in a row.. well there seemed to be an element of going through the motions in this match. Thats a luxury that over sides didn't have.
Very astute post and agree on everything.
If you have a game plan that doesn't focus on possession and you're happy to live off scavenged turnover ball, then you need to be really accurate once you have that turnover. The Boks butchered a good few of those opportunities in the first half. It still worked out ok but if their handling and accuracy in especially the backs doesn't improve markedly, we won't progress past Wales. The Welsh won't give us as many opportunities, and I expect them to keep picking up points throughout the game. Something Japan just couldn't manage. And then trying to chase the game, without possession is going to be a challenge. -

To be clear I thought this should have been a yellow at most.
Looks red to me, still.

I doubt the Chinese would support Japan ...
Or North Korea.

Even loige outlawed spear tackles ages ago. Driving the guy into the ground is super dangerous

@Billy-Webb
Cameras just happened to be there.
Nice.
