Mission accomplished by the Boks.
Despite Barnes trying his best to keep Japan in the game.
He can piss right off. You don’t ref for the home favorite underdog. You fucking ref the game without giving one team the constant benefit of the doubt.Rant done.
Well done to Japan for a good run in the tournament.
Hmmm. I wonder whether he had gone upstairs for Mtawarira's tip tackle, the outcome would not have been different. This was a big decision and it was not in Japan's favour.
Beast was very lucky, and the pleading look on his face told you that he knew his cup future was at risk

He more than made up for it in the 2nd half...
You must be referring to him not yellow / red carding Mutsushima?
I'd take a YC for Matsushima if Mtawarira got a RC
Of course you would. It would help you when we meet you later in the tournament.
But someone posted vids of both incidents above in this thread.
If you genuinely hold the view that Beasts was more dangerous, then I can’t help you.I'm simply applying the WR thresholds. I don't care if you've got Mtawarira on the field. I think he's like a number of players in that he's judged on reputation based on certain games. Current form means more to me. I don't rate him as much as some people do right now.
His loss shouldn't mean much to South Africa if they're judging/ selecting on form.

On the positive side, the best game I have seen from de Allende in ages. And very happy with our fitness. Last 20 the Bok power came through for us. But we will need to be better next week if we want to progress.
I give Wales zero chance. You are in the final. Hopefully we see you there for the 100th match between our nations.
France would have been an interesting game. I think you will squash Wales.

Meh.
I note your concession / non engagement re the Jap card
Point being, we can argue this either way all year.
It’s done now.Edit: and for the record, I thought the yellow for Beast was on the harsh end of the scale, but fair enough. Anything more would’ve been a joke. Most innocuous tip tackle we’ve seen this whole RWC. And bear in mind this is from Barnes who let an Italian who dumped a Bok much more dangerously completely off the hook.
Double edit: I clearly am one-eyed in my view on all of this. Judging by your thread commentary, so are you @antipodean .
Fair enough. I don’t really want to engage in a squabble about something done and dusted, so will accept that we agree to see it differently -

I suspect Rassie is happier playing Wales. And that’s no disrespect to Wales. France would probably have been an easier game 8 times out of 10. But it’s those 2 times that are hard to plan against.
Wales could well beat us. But it will be because they execute better on the day. Not because they suddenly turn turd into champagne. Those Frogs in RWC are a real enigma in the knockout stages.

The spear tackle was a red IMO, same as the one by Italy vs the Boks that wasn't called right. I hve no idea as it stands for the Japanese one, I would have said red, but then World Rugby hung Gardner(?) out to dry with the (correct IMO) red that the Frog got vs Barrett because 'he kept his eyes on the ball'. So I think that was a red, but no idea if it is by current interpretations. If either or red had been given, Boks still would have won. Much betterer team. They'll smash Wales, based on games just played and history, but knock out rugby can be tricky. Boksweren't perfect but they were good, and will step up again if they make the final, whereas Wales were an embaressment and have to turn it totally around.

Thought the Boks were inaccurate in the first half.
Two potential scoring opportunities messed up through poor skills.
We can’t afford that next week against Wales. On the positive side, the best game I have seen from de Allende in ages. And very happy with our fitness. Last 20 the Bok power came through for us. But we will need to be better next week if we want to progress.
The poor handling from the backs is the only real concern for the Boks.
They've picked up plenty of wins against the ABs by backing their defence over 80mins and still getting the occasional try despite not playing much.
The defence was at that level but the attack was appalling for most of the game.Sending up the shooter in defence (normally Faf) worked really well last night
The lineout was incredible. The scrum was strong apart from one 7 man effort when the hook was missed.
Faf's box kicks were a bit erratic
Thinking of Henry's old line about the difficulty of getting up mentally three weeks in a row.. well there seemed to be an element of going through the motions in this match. Thats a luxury that over sides didn't have.

The spear tackle was a red IMO
Not by the protocols the refs use. If he landed on his head/neck yes it would have been a red. It was a clear yellow.
I would argue the protocols are a bit shit but thats a different conversation. I don't like adding an incentive for the tackled player to not protect himself

Thanks Japan. You made my tournament.
Fxxkin' loved it.
And loved the reaction of the players... it wasn't “shit, we're so happy to be here”... it was “shit, we were this close to being in the semi”.
Not even a thought of not being a serious contender.
You beautiful magnificent little bastards... good play.I hope SANZAAAAAAR and World Rugby follow this up, it would be a desperate shame to have a nominally tier two host with their economic power top their pool and unite a nation so well to fuck it all up.
Sunwolves?

"Head and/or upper body" was the clarification. Split second instinct to stick out his arm stopped it being red.

@Duluth Is there a link to the protocols on tip tackles? I can't find one. Best I can find are these...
https://assets.usarugby.org/docs/refereeing/gmg-2015-hs.pdf (though this is for high school rugby).
Spear tackle or tip tackle. Lifting a player from the ground, turning the
body horizontal or beyond, and either driving the player into the ground or
dropping the player without regard for the player’s safety. PK and Red Card. -

Someone mentioned they have changed the card threshold for the playoffs. Had this been in the pool stages the Beast tackle would be a red and Matsushima was a yellow and potentially a red. Would have been very interesting the result had those been called.
Having said that I'm glad the threshold appears to have changed. Red cards should be for Frenchy thuggery.

Can't find one
They work through a flow diagram like the do with high tackles (link)
Over the last few years refs have checked for the initial contact with the ground. Head/neck = red and shoulder etc yellow.
They use that same deliberate structure and clearly state it. -

That gives the law, but not the protocol for deciding yellow or red - at least not that I can see.
