Neither Italy nor Scotland has a shit's show of winning the World Cup.Scotland were a controversial decision away from a semi with Argies in the last one, thats a winnable game which puts them in the final. They also came within a bee's dick of beating England at Twickenham a few months ago.
They may be inconsistent, but they are a chance and to be robbed of that chance due to a cancellation which, in my view, should have been avoided is appalling.

I agree it is terrible there is no contingency plan.
But let's not delude ourselves that either had a chance of even getting close to winning it this time.
There should be no "asterix" next to the winner at this stage, because no really strong team has missed out due to the typhoons. -
@Machpants said in RWC: Ireland v Samoa (Pool A):
@Derm-McCrum so they're allowed 29 on the squad?
Always - it's an Irish thing.

Oh get over yourselves.
The Ireland schtick is becoming wearisome. England, France, New Zealand all get a wave-through to the next stages, and save on wear and tear. It's a plus for them. Having less game time and longer than planned for rest might work against them somewhat but I'm sure it's something they all can handle.
Parisse & Co are rightly raging about the decision but not a lot can be done about it. If Ireland win, and Scotland v Japan gets cancelled then I'd be spitting tacks if I was Townsend. It certainly puts a blemish on the tournament. Hopefully it can go ahead.
Ideally for the organisers, Samoa would beat Ireland and then it wouldn't matter as much if the other game was cancelled.
You say save on wear and tear, I say lose the opportunity for some much needed game time for some of our players.
If you want to talk about things getting weary, you are looking in the wrong place. Barely 24 hours go by without some NH bore writing garbage about AB favouritism - hell, even read some comments about this game being cancelled BECAUSE of this. That, is the definition of weary. In fact, look at Parisse comment - "If New Zealand needed four or five points against us it would not have been cancelled"
I have huge sympathies for Parisse and his team. Regardless of expectancy in the match, this decision knocks them out. And that really sucks for them. If the same happens to the jocks, then I will feel the same for Townshend. In fact, I'd argue that it would genuinely put a massive asterix beside the results of this world cup.
But it's what we all signed up to. Same as losing the cricket world cup on a meaningless stat. Gotta move on and deal with it.
Yep - that's what I said.
-
@Derm-McCrum The wear and tear thing is a big advantage to the poms and France, but not us at all as I see it. We have depth, were playing a weak Italian side, a couple of key players (retallick, goodhue) need game time, and so does the Mounga Barrett system, the two young wings and the midfield combo.
I would much rather we had the game to play, but am gutted that the frogs and poms won't be beating each other up. -

well, this is all very seemly
Derm what are your hopes for this game? What are you looking for? (except 5 points obviously). More of the exact same, except a bit better?
Because you blokes haven't looked great thus far, and you are off to a quarter against us probably (unless Scotland suddenly turn up) in about a week.

I’m hoping they don’t play themselves into form and suddenly click in the quarters against us .
Mostly because I don’t want the abs to be knocked out on the quarters and also because I’ve enjoyed being a prick about them getting bukkaked by the Japanese and there’s probably a couple of Irish lurkers dying to get payback. -

I only fear England and SA this world cup and to a much less degree, Australia

@NTA 1999 was quite some time ago wasn't it? I hadn't thought about it being the last millennium since Aus won a RWC. Reminders are good, thanks Nick.
but, importantly, they haven't choked.
You have to be favoured to win for it to be even considered a choke. Like they were in 87. And 95 too i guess.
Short memories i guess...

Winning 25% of World Cups entered when its a third-tier sport is punching well above our weight, I'll have you know. Soon to drop to 22% after we get bundled.
The speed with which "BUGGEST WUNNUNG PERCINTUGE" turns to "But we weren't favourites in those RWC bro eh?" is awesome to behold, for a country obsessed with the sport.
Just like the "Always made the semifinals unlike everyone else" evaporated after 2007

well that, and being dragged to Billy Elliot last night.
I love how it's a 3rd tier sport. Except all long the East Coast of Australia. And probably the West Coast.
It's just a little sad that a prosperous nation of 25 million sports lovers can't find 30 decent rugby players.
-
Furthermore, i find it pretty ungrateful for an Australian to be heckling us about our rugby record. We are doing everything we can to bring you back up to Tier 1 level where you think you belong.
We've given you coaches. We've given you administrators. Fuck, we've given you half of your players. Short of actually handing you the trophies, we've done everything we possibly can to make you successful again. But you keep returning to your historical mean.
Some people just can't be helped.

Apparently Ireland and Samoa are doing something.
Don't worry about it, not relevant to the discussion.
Doesn't Robbie have the 7th best record of all Aussie coaches? Better than Jones, Mckenzie and Cheika.

hard to keep track, there was a point there where they were turning over coaches as quick as turned over Prime Ministers
-
