@sparky sadly, havent seen anything from Samoa to indicate they will get close.
There is a decent starting XV in the squad but we just haven’t seen it.
That Japan game was classic for this Samoan side, passages of positive forward dominated rugby but surrounded by amateurish play that lacked organisation and very little cohesion.
It’s symptomatic IMO of them not playing a whole together and the lack of trust within the squad.

@mofitzy_ Yup, that's pretty much how it would be likely to play out if the game gets called off. But I think that's still highly unlikely. No-one is certain about the path of the Typhoon right now, plus my understanding is they do have the Sunday on stand-by if the Saturday gets cancelled (assuming the next day would be fine?).
Would be a really shitty way to get knocked out of the RWC which I wouldn't wish on anyone.
One day I hope to be less of a fluffybunny and be as charitable and understanding as you . In the meantime if the typhoon canceled the game and knocked out the Irish I would laugh like a loon .
Same, I'm not a good enough person to not love this

Precisely - whoever wrote that wasn't thinking. Cancelling the Irish match doesn't change anything. What it would do is give the squad extended time to recuperate and prepare for their quarter final. Then the competition would lose integrity.

@antipodean If they want to maintain whatever integrity that's left, then they should cancel all the games this weekend. Having some teams play one game less is not a fair outcome as they will be fresher going into the knockouts. Of course SA would feel hard done by as they have played all their games already, but they get a massive advantage by having an easier quarter due to the typhoon so it evens out.

They have to play it surely. It's a slim chance but Scotland could still progress if Samoa knocks Ireland over, why kick the Scots in the teeth twice? Surely this could also be lawsuit territory for fans travel and expenses, cancelling for an 'act of God' is one thing but for 'integrity'?

If they want to maintain whatever integrity then they should stick to the conditions. Abandoned match = draw. Only effected matches are abandoned. If this was weekend 1 rather than weekend 3, that is what they would do.
If they want to make money, or keep content on TV etc, or keep spectators happy - then they should move what they can to a roofed stadium.

Actually, Scotland still progress even if Ireland beat Samoa provided they beat Japan (bonus point not needed because they have superior points differential and the fact they won the game between the two 2nd place getters)

Actually, Scotland still progress even if Ireland beat Samoa provided they beat Japan (bonus point not needed because they have superior points differential and the fact they won the game between the two 2nd place getters)
This is assuming Japan don't pick up a bonus point themselves in this scenario (for either scoring 4 tries or getting within 7 points).

Samoa coach Vaeluaga Steve Jackson has made just two changes to his side to take on Ireland on Saturday. Loose-head prop Logovii Mulipola, above, and second-row Teofilo Paulo return to the starting XV having sat out the 38-19 defeat by Japan. They replace Jordan Lay and Piula Faasalele, who drop to the bench. It means the Lam brothers - hooker Seilala, and captain and number eight, Jack - will start a second successive World Cup game alongside one another. Jackson keeps faith with the same back division that started against Japan, but he will hope one or two others come to the party in Fukuoka after centre Henry Taefu contributed all 19 points (one try, one conversion, four penalties) on his own against the hosts. -

The Ireland schtick is becoming wearisome. England, France, New Zealand all get a wave-through to the next stages, and save on wear and tear. It's a plus for them. Having less game time and longer than planned for rest might work against them somewhat but I'm sure it's something they all can handle.
Parisse & Co are rightly raging about the decision but not a lot can be done about it. If Ireland win, and Scotland v Japan gets cancelled then I'd be spitting tacks if I was Townsend. It certainly puts a blemish on the tournament. Hopefully it can go ahead.
Ideally for the organisers, Samoa would beat Ireland and then it wouldn't matter as much if the other game was cancelled.

You say save on wear and tear, I say lose the opportunity for some much needed game time for some of our players.
If you want to talk about things getting weary, you are looking in the wrong place. Barely 24 hours go by without some NH bore writing garbage about AB favouritism - hell, even read some comments about this game being cancelled BECAUSE of this. That, is the definition of weary. In fact, look at Parisse comment - "If New Zealand needed four or five points against us it would not have been cancelled"
I have huge sympathies for Parisse and his team. Regardless of expectancy in the match, this decision knocks them out. And that really sucks for them. If the same happens to the jocks, then I will feel the same for Townshend. In fact, I'd argue that it would genuinely put a massive asterix beside the results of this world cup.
But it's what we all signed up to. Same as losing the cricket world cup on a meaningless stat. Gotta move on and deal with it.
