Otago vs Canterbury (RS)
-
Saturday night, and for once a prime time game of note. Can't wait. For a change I'm more interested in getting the W for our postion on the table than I am for the Shield, which is indicative of our season relative to seasons past when we've also challenged.
Team naming probably tomorrow but sounds like Romano and Ennor are both in doubt
-
how do the same goddam teams keep getting challenges?!
Me and @Chris-B demand an investigation, Geoff Toovey style

The Bay has had two challenges since we last had one!
Which is more than what Wellington and Auckland have had (one apiece).
At the other end of the spectrum, Why-fucking-Kato has had 6; Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Otago and Southland have each had 5.
Thames Valley, Mid-Canterbury and Wanganui have each had 3 and they don't even play in the fucking NPC!!!
Yeah - where's Geoff Toovey when you need him!
-
-
@mariner4life The Blues were in the play-offs last time we got a challenge! Well, that's a slight exaggeration, but people could at least remember the Blues being in the play-offs.

Toeava was killing it, got hurt, and the Blues folded?
Did your plastic franchise even exist then? Or were you still one of the two backwater 2nd Div provinces?

aaaaanyway.
Even though Otago seem to have got better since the Bay flogged fuck through them early in the year, what chances are there that they repulse the evil empire here? Slim? Fuck all?

I think at $3.25 Otago are a good bet, we have been average this year
-
@mariner4life Mako have been around for 14 years. We've had two challenges in our existence.
The first (vs Wellington) we got stitched up when Bryce Lawrence sent the world's best halfback (according to @Nepia ) to the bin, for fuck-all, when we were threatening a boilover.
Second was more than seven years ago.

what i love about the Shield is the way it makes us cling bitterly to the stitch up we got from the ref. Otago in Auckland all those years ago. The fullback stepped dead before he put the ball down in '96, i fucking swear it, where was Ben fucking Skeen then aye?
Colin Hawke must have a rogues gallery of those type of moments.

Yep, we're quite ordinary and I'd expect that big plastic lean-to to be at its fullest for the season, raucous, and a bloody good atmosphere. Should be a good spectacle on the box.
I'll call it now: this is the biggest round robin game of the comp and will be the closest we'll come to a decent SR game for atmosphere, intensity and spectacle.

I'm still annoyed with the Wellington based NZRU removing our Shield victory in 1927 over Wairarapa in the Battle of Solway (which was a return match after they took the Shield off the greatest provincial team ever, well maybe until the 1980s Aucklanders) because a player was a couple of days late arriving in Hawkes Bay.

With Cardiff Arms Park in 1905 a close second.

He was our best poach from you guys ever! After you poached him from Wellington. Should have been an AB!

George Naopu was fairly decent as well. On the other hand there was Mike Coman...........................................
-
@Chris-B said in Otago vs Canterbury (RS):
@Nepia We repatriated him from New Haven Rugby in the US. Who poached him from Auckland.
Like most right-thinking people, he had nothing to do with Wellington.
Auckland? Wellington? At any rate the North Island!

Brilliant hi-jack. Isn't there a Hawkes Bay vs Mako thread you lot can go and make woopee on?

every thread is a Mako v Hawkes thread. They're like Agent Smith in the 3rd Matrix movie
-
Exactly - and if you want to challenge for the Unfairly Shield, you've got to expect some discussion of the injustices that are being perpetrated.
Edit: And for completeness - this is Canterbury's third challenge since the Mako last had one.
But, there's actually three Heartland unions that have waited longer than Ta$man. West Coast hasn't had a challenge since 2000. Buller - hey another Top of the South team; and South Canterbury.

@Higgins Ben Franks as well, you Thieving Magpies!
F**k you, we didn't want that thug, your dipshit Crusaders region coach brought him in as FIFO.

Best locking combo, best loose trio available (Sanders would be ahead of Prinsep) plus Douglas on the bench, great group of props and I like the look of the backline with Punivai at centre given the continued absence of Ennor. Centre is Punivai's position and 12 is Batemans' best. Still have a 12 on one wing and a 10/15 on the other but that's ok at this level and both have had their moments.
Looking forward to this.

good to have a few Highlanders in amongst that lot

-
Good guys score a try. McKay in for another try.
10-0.
-
Great intercept from McLeod, good speed from McKay. Try.
10 - 0 Canterbury
-
@Stargazer distinct lack of speed from McLeod though. Every inch a 12 on the wing.
-
On-field decision: no try. It looked like a try, but the grounding wasn't clear and obvious, so correct decision to disallow the try.
-
Forward pass missed by Jackson. Classic.
-
Otago needed that ,only a 2 score game, despite Canterbury having their noses ahead
-
Great defence from McLeod.
-
Any backs have injuries in Japan, get Nareki on the plane please
-
@Stockcar86 I prefer Leicester Fainga'anuku, but Nareki isn't bad.
-
@Stargazer Have you given up on Jonah Lowe?
-
Good half of code..plenty of opportunities from both teams, but the holders after looking under the pump in the first 20 minutes have come right back into it..have actually created better try scoring opportunities..,and along with 2 missed penalties..
