Super Rugby 2020

If Scott Robertson is correct the plan is to have both
Right but under his plan you have to get under way in early June. Mitre 10 Cup is scheduled to start on Thursday 6 August. Let's say Super Rugby is scheduled to finish on July 25. To get in 10 rounds the competition would need to start on May 23. Throw in three weeks training before hand and the players basically need to be allowed to start training in one week's time. The earliest the country can go to level 2 is May 11.
So best case scenario we can get this competition happening if we push Mitre 10 Cup back two weeks. Mitre 10 Cup can probably get put back up to five weeks (you don't want it finishing after November as players need a break before next season).

Benefits:
- Cheaper competition without flights to South Africa and Argentina.
- Less physical demand on players with travel.
Negatives:
- Could dilute the strength of NPC.
- May not drive enough revenue.
If Australian Super Rugby were as strong as the Reds used to be (in the early days), then the competition could be good. Unfortunately the Rebels remain diluting the player base.
I'd expect their broadcast partners will inform them which are the big audience fixtures. The problem is the parlous state of RA's finances and the board upheaval. Will they have to accept whatever Fox throws at them for next year?
Unless RA can be in a strong position, it will simply feel like a continuation of the last 30 years - New Zealand propping up Australian rugby. And given who is rumoured to be pushing for CEO, it doesn't fill one with confidence that support will be remembered.

@mariner4life super 6, 10 and CANZ were those that was prior to Super rugby.
Super 10 was top NZ/Aus teams, CANZ series had other teams in NZ, Argentina and Canada (who were expected to become a power...)
could be an opportunity to look at other options too

@taniwharugby yeah i realise it's a bit of a throwback. But, to me anyway, it makes sense to go back to provincialism if we are going to take the Saffers out of the equation.
The only question is, does this make enough money to keep the lights on?
-
@mariner4life probably need to include Japan to get that.
-
@mariner4life Drop Otago.

harsh. possibly fair. They do have the best stadium in NZ for that level of footy, and it would be a shame to waste it. And surely we can get 3 competitive teams in the South Island?
Otherwise that leaves 2 teams to take up all those pro players, it'll be and all South Island final

Merge BOP and Hawkes and call it The Bay Vikings.
someone ban this fluffybunny!!!
-
while @Toddy might well be it may be the reality that if some of our unions want to survive in a world without Super Rugby as we know it, merging might be the only way.
God, Northland/North Harbour
-
@mariner4life Split Canterbury and you have three teams.
-
@taniwharugby I know, a mighty team saddled with 2nd division dross!

God, Northland/North Harbour
i get that, but i hate the idea. it dilutes the product. Neither Northland fans, nor Harbour fans, are going to buy-in to a team they see half the time. And can you really see either Bays supporting the other one?
Promotion/relegation would be good. And no bullshit relegation game either. Up and down. HB, Northland, Manawatu and Southland with the best heartland unions looking to come back up.

-
@mariner4life I didnt say I thought it was a good idea...
@Duluth yeah, that would make sense, but I reckon Harbour would not buy it given the history of the name, so it'd have to be something lame like Northern Districts

The better way to do it is having three or four separate competitions (maybe 5 or 6) with intrapool play followed by a short round robin/crossovers (if time) and finals for a few teams.
I'd have 5 NZ super teams, 5 SA, a 5 team Aus comp with one Pacific Island team or get the Force back, one Japan pool, then possibly an Argentinian/US pool.
Then take 10 teams to a final series for the Super Trophy Championship.
The Super Cup/Plate would be played for by the 10 teams under that.
