@Nepia The Southland Sharks basketball team are a better example as they sign up players from all over the country and have been at or near the top for a few years now. Obviously it's easier to throw money at 12 players than a squad of 30+ so I assume the corporates aren't as interested in rugby.

I thought that was what the netball team did as well? (I know nothing about the NZ basketball league these days).

The Netball team does have locals but is the equivalent of the Highlanders as the Southern Steel is Otago/Southland.

@Hooroo Why would I have the answer, if even NZRU doesn't seem to have one?
I don't think the NZRU is looking for an answer to this. I'm just interested in your thoughts as you seem to know why it won't work
It is a monumentally shit idea. Would artificially benefit low population areas. You would have the chiefs with 4 unions at a massive artificial disadvantage to unions in the Saders and and Landers.
It is up to Southland to pull themselves out of the shit not force players to live Southland if they want a central contract.
Would also prob hurt the Highlanders, as they would quickly become a least favourite destination for 'free agents' want a contract there.. gotta love in Invercargill or Dunedin nearly year round...fuck that. Almost as bad as being stuck in Chch.Boom! I'll take the bait from someone who's province proudly boasts dumps like Rotorua (the absolute king of dumps), Tauranga and Whakatane.
Canterbury has plenty of dumps... Only difference is our dumps are on stable land.

Chop the NPC down to 11 teams - 10 round robin games, less squad weakness.
Three mergers? A lower SI side, North Auckland and the Central Vikings?
Bro! You’re striking some nerves there.
Never actually minded the name North Auckland, it’s what I remember as a little kid. But a merger with Harbour.. No thanks. Imagine it, a bunch of dreaded sun drenched pot heads driving Mercedes convertibles.

We need to expand from upvotes to reactions, including one that looks like this

Don't stop there. I reckon what we should do is form a lower SI side, upper SI side, lower NI side, central NI side and upper NI side. Now two games a week and a team having a bye every third week or so isn't much fun so we should pit these 'Super provinces' against Australian and South African teams. Who knows, maybe one day we could include a team from South America and/or an Asian side. Brilliant!!!

Nah you would keep the name, the history, the uniform and in return you just need to give up the home ground

@Duluth I just assumed you meant NH would have to merge into Northland, which I didnt see any problems with...I mean having 2 teams seperated by a silly little bridge is, well, silly.
I’d happily take the name North Auckland back. We were historically better then. One of NZs best during the 60/70’s.. Now look at us.

@Duluth Why have you included HB in your more defensive comment? It is pretty obvious you were referring to a merger between The 'Poo, Wanganui and Taranaki into one unit to be called Central Vikings hence no reason for HB supporters to become involved.

No no he meant HB. I for one enjoyed that little merger. Worked bloody well.

Nepia must be at work; I assumed the bat sign would have gone off over Sydney and he'd be on that in a heartbeat.
Just got home from my after work walk and too beat to find a gif that expresses how angry I am right now.
It’s not the Vikings themselves to be sure, it’s not even the bright orange jersey, it’s the unholiness of being associated with the Poo.

I bet you did! Stockcar86 and I were in attendance at Okara Park when the ground announcer took great pride in reading the ever increasing score in your guys favour as Northland all on its own 37 The Combined Manawatu-Hawkes Bay Team 10 that Friday night way back in 1997. Come to think of it he announced every score change in the same manner! The final score got to something around the fifty mark for the home side and the combined side scrambled a miniscule 13. The final later in the season, also at Okara Park, was given a miss and from memory it was an even greater pounding in the favour of Northland - all on it's own!

I reckon Canterbury country would beat Southland. A shame the crfu don’t do more for country rugby in Canterbury. So much talent out there. We are a victim of our own success.

I made a table of finishing positions for some of the teams
The teams are the old yo-yo teams of the 1990's, plus Manawatu and Otago
The start date is when the NPC format changed (2011)
The teams were listed from 1-14 after the round robin. Yes I know that's not fully correct as there are two divisions.. its just a rough guide
Team 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 Best Finish Average Finish Taranaki 3 4 6 1 4 1 1 7 1 3.375 BOP 3 6 7 14 11 11 9 12 3 9.125 HB 9 7 10 9 8 7 13 10 7 9.125 Otago 10 9 9 13 10 8 10 9 8 9.75 Manawatu 8 13 12 8 7 11 12 13 7 10.5 Southland 7 11 11 11 13 14 14 14 7 11.875 Northland 12 12 13 10 14 13 11 11 10 12 The first really obvious point is that Taranaki is not like the others. Why? They are a former yo-yo team, not a SR base and a population similar to other lesser teams.
Northland and Otago are the sides that have not been in the 1st division
Otago deserve more criticism than they get
Southland's decline seems steady. Prior to 2011 they had some very good seasons too
